The problems with mmorpgs today

Reasons:

1)No time.. These MMOs want you to grind the whole time. I do not want to login to just grind...

2)Lack of PvP.. Ya I want some fun, not just killing monsters. And I do not mean just PvP enabled but special systems like castle seiges where there is a point to PvP.

3)Uniqueness.. Where has this gone? I think I am mixing up all the MMOs' names I have played cause they look and play so similar.

4)Customization and variety. I don't want to get to the end-game just by grinding and grinding is based on time played. I am hoping DS has some variety as to what you can achieve even based on differences. Considering my lack of time, I would much rather spend sometime crafting or doing other trade skills but in other MMOs, the only way to continue crafting/other trade skills is by getting to higher levels.

I hope DS doesn't have it like; for example, Lineage 2, if you are a dwarf, you have to continue grinding just to craft better things...

5)Community. People are getting immature everyday. I am sure many are seeing this (if not, please tell me what MMO you are playing).

Yup I am holding out for DS. Looking promising. I realy like the community there on the forums and the game is looking great too so far. It is being made by old gamers.

  • i feel exactly same as you

Tried most MMORPGs, found them boring with the same symptoms you have highlighted.

I found Shaiya quite good, because it has a mass-scaled PvP system (RvR). 100 vs 100 and that was really fun, and can be easily accessed at lower levels. Higher level RvR invovle bigger maps and more strategic manoeuvring, so im motivated to level.

Quests require groups and community is great.

Apart from Shaiya the only other MMORPG i really loved was Uncharted Waters Online.

Im holding out for Aion and Warhammer OL., because both will heavily feature Rvr gameplay.

Thanks but, I think I'll just wait for DS. I took a look at those games. Not enough to do in them for me. I get bored with only killing stuff and crafting.

    "The problems with mmorpgs yesterday"

Maybe you havn't noticed but there is a huge technological leap in mmorpgs coming up mid-way this year(ie. Vanguard, AoC) you just have to be patient, the ones we play today are years old, what do you expect.

Very true.  It seems that most of the MMO's coming out have the same feel and setup.  I have played many...probably too many of the games out at one time or another.  The only one that I've played that doesn't conform to the grinding (as far as levels) is Eve.  Granted you still need to run about like a headless chicken for awhile getting money and items but "leveling" happens in real time, whether you're playing or not. And as far as community, I played with several corporations (guilds) that were well organized and fun to be in.  I would suggest looking into it. Hopefully I didn't just open this thread to any needless rambling, ranting and pissing contests.

You're right EvE is definatly one of the many mmorpgs that think outside of the box. Very fun, very indepth, and outrageous spectacular graphics. The game is huge and to explore it would take years and the community is one of the best I've seen in any mmorpg. The devs and mods are around to talk it up with the community. They care, you should too =).

I currently play EVE and i'm in que to start up beta for Spellborn soon.  I am really hoping the skill system in Spellborn works with some similarity to EVE (i've read that they are using a single avatar skill based system, so that makes me think of the old SWG and EVE).  I really think they need a fantasy type game that uses similar gaming concepts to EVE.  I would play that game for sure.  The biggest thing I get out of EVE right now is there is so much to learn about the game still and the concept is so different from anything that I've played before.  Heck, I'll keep subscribing it just "because" they have thought outside the standard MMO pre-packaged box.

I should really get into EVE online, i got a serial code for it from a contest a while back but i never used it, i played the trial though, was pretty fun but then i just didnt really get into playing it and so i didnt continue after the trial. Im still playing wow, waiting to see if BC can make it fun again but i doubt it will, the community on my servers allright, there are a few annoying idiots but theyre easily ignorable, pvp is pretty pointless all you do is get honor and use that honor to get weapons and armour and pish, plus endgame gets boring too after doing mc/bwl/aq/naxx for so long.

Huge technological leaps in Vanguard and AoC? Perhaps graphics wise but little in the areas described by the OP. Those titles are the same level based EQ formulas with small twists with, if any, side-dish PvP.

Hehe, yep....welcome to the end of the line.  You have reached the last page of the internet, click here to start over!  In all seriousness, I think we've all been where you're finding yourself at some point or another.  That was when a friend politely informed me that he was converting me to the dark side of EVE online and told me I would no longer have any interest in playing any other games.  LOL, if the skills weren't time based, I'd have passed him up by now!   EVE really is a great game, but along those lines, it's also just not for everyone.  If my choices were play WoW or quit playing, I think I would head out and buy a good fantasy book to spend my time with.

Yeah, and what is coming is not here now. You hit the nail on the head. Our niche demands progression in a stagnant industry, and the unfortunate reality is that we face a slew of publishers for which innovation and the bottom line are mutually exclusive. Our demographic is only a tiny sliver in that big 'ole 'return on investment' pie chart. Guess which segment they are going to cater to. Consider the increasing levels of MMO addiction as well... investors are going to exploit that like you wouldn't believe. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if MMOs devolved into something dangerously close to a virtual Skinner box, where the rewards are meticulously controlled in order to condition behavior. Oh who am I kidding, we're already there, and the publishers know it.

I know that there are a few games i've been noticing that have been straying away from the normal grinding of the common MMORPG. Although I don't play too many MMOs I tend to keep away from the ones that just seem tedious and boring. But i have found quite a few that are PVP and don't just grind on and on.

Ok after reading some of the reviews (to many to read all), I am not impressed. I totaly hate lag. Not to mention that the combat aspect does not look to be very promising for my tastes. I remember now why I did not buy it long ago.

Up until this post, I would have said DarkSpace, which is almost a totally PvP environment and has been 'Released' for over 5 years, but now I am not so sure...

Which game? EVE? I don't notice any lag in EVE really.  As far as spellborn goes, not sure, no one should say anything about that game as there's still an NDA on it.  If someone complained about EVE being laggy, it was an old post I think.  They had a spike in population and had to upgrade hardware to service the new customer base.  EVE is free to play for 14 days and a 550 ish MB client download without having to enter a credit card.  That's the way to go in my opinion.  Don't ask anything of the player, just let em play, then if they like it, they can buy it for 19.99 which includes 30 days game time, then the regular subscription starts.  I hate having to enter a credit card to do a trial.  I just don't see that they will ever need my credit information unless I really want to keep playing.

I agree, lack of pvp is pretty much going to get dumbed down to just duels thats it. Not all but a lot of people hold the precious pixels they see on the screen closer to their heart than many real world things. Some people think they own the pixels and data that are on a companies server when it in the EULA that the company owns everything no matter what.

Uniqueness is spiraling downward because of fear. Companies are jumping on the clone bandwagon and are afraid to implement and try out new things because they are afraid they wont make enough money.

Customization and variety, every game interface is starting to either look exactly or very very very similar to WOWs interface. Companies again are afraid if they dont make an interface that looks like other games people will not want to play because its too different from what they are used to..

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

LOL, Ok Briansho.....I gotta say it.  I freakin LOVE that signature.  I am sure I've seen it before at some point in time and remember quite well what it was like to actually have some "extended" memory!  That's great stuff there.  Talk about innovation in the computer market.  Hey, what would happen if we just let folks have 1024 instead of 640?  I bet Bill laughed that guy out of the room and he went to work for IBM and they made him a VP eventually, LOL.

I have been following CoS for over a year now. I was all wanting to play that. Lately it seems there is no clue as to when it will be available for those of us in the USA to play.

OP needs Darkfall. It "promises" everything you seem to want. Meaningful pvp, etc.

Now that is an accomplishment, indeed! Most people do not get past 60s in WOW.
