Interesting question. I would say more like instances...you connect to the worlds via linking books. But that is part of the Myst lore...so you could say that Myst was the game that invented instances. Cool eh?
In some ways both. While there are some ages (areas) that are instanced for "private" play, others are public, and you can invite people to join you in you "private instance" of an age too. Basically it's your choice how you want to play.
All areas are accessed through books (cooler than it seems, just have to play it). All public books such as those to the city will be non-instanced. But those books on your private library shelves will be instanced, but you can invite people to go with you.

I am not sure "february" is correct. They have only said earily 2007.
I'm a GameTap subscriber, so as far as it goes for me, the game is out. I just switched my URU installation from my Ajar Beta installer to my GameTap folder.
