Are Sports games Kryptonite to MMORPG players

XaldorXaldor Member Posts: 236

I love to play sports games, and MMORPG's, but many of my friends that play MMORPG's think that sports games suck....in fact almost 100% of them do.  Why is this???  What is it about these games that do not appeal to rpg'ers.

I mean most of my friends that play mmorpgs and not sports games, play all other genres...like strategy, action, and fps's.

In fact if you think about it sports games are actually action/strategy/rpg games....so am I crazy or something????

I think it's because very few rpger/mmorpg fans are also sports fans, now why that is I don't know.

hehe, just talking about sports around most my gamer friends and I get weird looks.

same thing when talking games around my sports fan buddies.

oh well, they both just don't know what they're missing!

Exactly.....that is my theory too, just different markets.  I would love to do some kind of a market research study and find out WHY though...Xaldoimage

hehe, it's been a while since I was in High School, but I'm guessing the divide between the two groups often starts there ::::40::

I feel like you would find it takes an open mind to play games based on fantasy and community cooperation.

You have to be open minded to trust your life to a healer/wizard named LordViper21 or Doood14.

Sports games are bound to a long established set of rules.(or variations of the rules).

I enjoy both but spend more time with mmorpgs because they demand it.

I like MMORPG's, sports games, and driving games. Driving and racing games are my bane though. I can play a good one for hours upon hours upon hours... Now, if only I didn't suck at getting kudos in Project Gotham 2 so bad :(

I consider myself to be a sports fan. I enjoy watching football, tennis, boxing and other sports. But I generally do not buy or play sports video games.
One of the main draws for me in video games is being able to act and behave in ways that I can't in real life. I'd much rather throw a real football or volley a real tennis ball than do it in a video game. For me, the real life versions are much more entertaining and fulfilling than the video game versions.
I guess the more likely I'm able to do something in real life the less likely I going to want to do it in a video game.

I love both sports and MMORPGs, IN FACT while camping spawns in EQ or wiating for shit to happen in Shadowbane or SWG (last summer when I played all that crap) I'd ALWAYS have my PS2 controller in hand playing Madden, NCAA football, ESPN basketball or something. In general you shouldnt group with me cause I'm pretty much AFK playing my games leeching exp.

I find alot of the MMORPG people I know dont like sports its true, and the same the other way around, guess its the old line between the Jocks and the Geeks still alive and well in non-school situations, what can ya do !

From my experience... MMORPG players like myself like involving games that take a lot of time to accomplish.  We were the ones that grew up playing Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy.  40+ hours of gameplay per RPG we played... what else did we have time for?  A fifteen minute game of baseball didn't gather my attention much.  I really didn't play sports games unless it was involved... like a whole season where your players changed due to your coaching.  From what i've noticed, if a MMORPG player wants to sit in on a 15 minute to 1 hour game of something, it tends to be a first person shooter like Counter-Strike.  I'm not sure why that is tho...

    I just hate sports.

Though I am physically more athletic than the general population of Gamers and Geeks, I still hate sports. Hehe.image

My roommate and I are both big MMORPG fans and both of us enjoy sport games. The difference between us is that he enjoys the console style whereas I enjoy the team management-style games. These are based more on strategy, long term planning and following the careers of your players (story/character development?) and to me aren't that far off from a MMORPG game. I enjoy running the teams not playing the games out.

My favourite by far is Out of the Park Baseball  ( http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/ootp/ ) which is an awesome game and really the only sports game I play. I highly recommend this for anyone even remotely interested in this sort of thing (and baseball).
