TOA isn't as bad as people claim, it added many good functions to the game. It just isn't as good as people expected. I'll give you examples:
1. Master Trials: Fun idea, very cool, yeah baby... wait? Most trials need large groups to do, take lots of time and planning. One or two even have solo encounter pre-requirement. You get into this whole group zerg, do a trial, and really don't want to ever do it again. So, you have to wait weeks before you find enough people to do an early trial. Second, it really is a big raid zerg, not sure how much of personal 'trial' it is.
2. Artificats...camp fest. Scrolls are even a bigger camp fest. It adds some economy to the game, but it is a huge time sink for items that will eventual deteriorate that you can't get again (as far as I know). Example, let's say you wanted shield of aten. You go to this island and have to open chests. 99% of the time the chest will spawn 3-4 orange/purple mobs. 1% you will get the shield. After 4 hours of us opening boxes and fighting spawns, no shield. This doesn't count the scroll hunt, which in itself will take hundreds of hours of killing mobs for rare drops. Then once you do get those babies (hundreds of hours later) you need to level them, and some can only be levelled on certain mobs, zones, or mobs-zones at a certain time of the day. It is EverCamp gone bad! I mean you got an experience bar for your dagger and t-shirt!!!
3. RVR: TOA Master Levels, Legendary Weapons, and those artificats give you an edge in RVR. You can do rvr without them, but you will be second class. So, now to really stay on top or at least perform well you got put hundreds of hours in TOA.
Now, TOA hurt DAOC bad, but it also added to it other elements that is fun. Better graphics is a plus, the actual items and abilities once you get them is fun, and even the dungeons and landscape in TOA is cool. It is just not something fun for a L45-50 to do, it gets boring fast!! Now, if TOA was made for levels 25-50 so by 50 doing the TOA ML would be like getting your epic and more encounters were to be solo only and required questing, explorations, and some strategy then it would have been awesome. TOA would have made awesome PVE addition for those lower levels, but at 50...yawn!
It didn't ruin the game, but it didn't make it more fun. It added something that would have been fun early on the levelling treadmill, but not for those 50 who wanted to rvr. Farming and camping isn't why we signed up for DAOC for. Many of us are x-EQers for a reason, and if DAOC continues on this trend, we will be x-DAOCers too.
ToA is horrible! First of all they made it so you need to get toa and spend a ton of time getting all the uber Toa gear to compeat with others that have it. if you dont have it you will die. 90% of the people that play are sick of pve by the time they get to 50. then toa comes along and has tons of other stuff you need to do in pve just what everyone was looking for. You go out and get your fancy toa artifact to make yourself stronger then you need to level it. yay more pve BLAH its not the sort of intresting expansion everyone was looking for. To make everying worse 99% of the stuff there you need to be 50 for so its not even a new fancy place to level in.
I usually dont have that much time to play but I still like the Master Trails alot. Only problem is that when you get in a 3-4fg raid you sure dont wanna log. Yes, some MLs you need that many people...or more! There are to many Trailsteps that takes to many people, this is a downside.
Some encounters are really amazingly done (5.9-5.10 anyone) and lots of cred to Mythic for their efforts of making fun PvE.
Artifacts...dont even get me started on this one. They look great, and some was way overpowered until patch nerfed them (still not on EU servers where I play though). Artifacts are nothing for the casual player but if you got a nice guild they will help you get what you need...you will need friends.
RvR...I guess New Frontiers will change RvR abit but until then Im prob taking it easy with the RvRing. No doubt should people that spend more time getting the "right" stuff be better in RvR, but in DAoC today you have no chance at all taking down a fully equiped player unless you spent lots of time getting that stuff yourself.
"It added something that would have been fun early on the levelling treadmill"
I still will continue to play DAoC since I think its the best mmorpg out there at the moment.
Playing: DAoC (again) Wish beta and some Horizons
---------------------------------------- Playing: Rogue Played: AO, CoH, DAoC, EQII, Horizons, Planetside, SWG Tested: AC2, Lineage II, Vanguard, WoW...and more
I and many others have always preferred DAoC to EQ because of the comeback factor.
In EQ I was level 60 rogue with my epic(only like 10 rogue epic on whole server then) in planar armour.I was basically one of the best dmg dealer on the whole server. In less then a year of retirement I would be at best an average rogue if not below par.
And it takes so long to re equip in EQ that it really not worth the effort to return.
In DAoC you could be level 50 in barrows armor/weapon and comeback and in a week you be fit for RvR again taking on the best.
Not so now the TOA has made it that you have to keep up with the trials. So if you retired before TOA and come back in 6 months you will very it near impossible to do the trials leaving you back.
I think mythic made a mistake. They have created the game in such a way that people will never want to come back.I quit for the 3rd time recently and have to say this is it.Not coming back to DAoC because it lost its comeback factor.
Wow Herc you took the words right outta my mouth! I started playing DAOC from release and have quit twice and I too will not come back for a 3rd try. TOA has completely crippled the CASUAL GAMER (1-2 hours a night) by not allowing them to compete in RvR/PvP.
rediculous to need a 'buff bot' + multiple level 10 artifacts AND Master Levels to compete. Please tell me how a casual gamer can accomplish this? NUFF SAID!!!

First off, Damkar hit it right on.. TOA makes the middle class of DAoC look pitiful.. I have yet to buy TOA and probably won't.
One thing you failed to mention is that it is damn hard to even go out and RvR with 90% of the server's level 50's either a)camping artifacts b)levelling artifacts or c)farming cash for various purposes. So then if by chance you get to go RvR and don't have TOA gear, you get pwned
And to touch on Thorkill's post.. Casual gamers are NEVER supposed to be able to keep up with the power gamers. That is what a power gamer is.. If a power gamer can't enjoy atleast a slight advantage for the time he spends levelling a buffbot and getting his stuff, then that would be pretty dumb
That said I still think TOA is a mistake that hurt the dynamics of DAoC, and I am waiting for DnL for the RvR type stuff.. And EQ2 for the normal gameplay stuff... (and maybe Ryzom or WoW for a change of pace.. but as you see.. Blizzard games are OVERRATED )
I think what we are trying to say is not the fact that a casual should be on par with a harcore but the fact that if you miss the trials you will not ever be able to do it.
Look at the euro server the trials been out for about a month and already folks that did not do level 1-3 are stuck as they can't get folks to help out as most folks are at 5 plus now.
So if you quit today having done only level 1 and come back in even 3 months time you have almost zero chance of getting the trials done at all even with a very understanding guild.
i stick by with what i say "toa ruined rvr by the people thinking they need it" i havent set foot in toa in a long long time and i still own in rvr against people who farm there butts off getting toa crap so saying that you need the toa crap is a copout. always depends on your grp and grp your fighting. of course a zerg vs 1 full grp will always loss no matter what. in short it depends on your skill and theres. even if they have toa crap and you dont. most of the toa stuff is only usefull in large battles so 1 grp vs 1 grp is alot easyer and if just farming rps its better one on one.

This is a far change from how DAoC was till now.
