Technically they are "stand-alone" games...so you don't need Prophecies in order to play the other two chapters.
There is a seperate storyline in each of the three GW games, so you should be fine and you won't really be "lost" because you don't know what happened in the first game.
if you are new then you would consider it a lost . most players are on nightfall and prophetcies right now, so you will have a really hard time to find people to team up for mission in faction.
as last time i saw there are only 1 person active in first mission in faction. i think only some pvp players are stay in faction . the rest is people who " work" in guild wars there. you know what i mean about them. or if you are not then u can consider them as some people who had been paid 300us permonth to sell and trade to earn gold for some boss:D.
if you are not use the CDkeys yet. i recommend bring the game back and trade for guild wars nightfall. or rather buy prophetcies.
I think you just go at the wrong times. There are people all through Factions.... Of the 3 it's the lowest rated but the other two are really great games where Factions is only moderately good. So at worst you bought a Moderately good game in comparison to the other 2. From what i've read Nightfall is the place to start though. I'd check into investing in that one if you get the money then getting Prophicies eventually.

I bought Factions first, loved it, bought Prophecies and then Nightfall. If you're dumb, I was the original idiot. Nah, Factions rocks and I had no problem "learning" it.

Well, you probably are good at the game :P but you gotta admit Prophecies was way easier to get into, as you leveled (relatively) slowly and learned skills at the game's pace. Factions literally tosses you into mobs that explode in your face, and is often too hard of an impact for newbies.
lol, yep. you love it but it was when the game first come out.
i doubt that u will love it now when u wait for weeks and can't pass a darm mission because of lack player. there is mission which you can't pass with henchman. i'm not new ,dude . i played this game 2 years and more.
i just give some advice for new player. even prophetcies has more player than faction.
for anyone new to guild wars. you should buy nightfall first. then you can do the rest with your heros if u can't find a darm partner:D
Some players in my guild Start their characters in Factions or rush them to Cantha to level them the rest of the way with help from other players who own Nightfall and thus own Heroes. What the Designers did was rather ingenious from a financial point of view. They put the FREE skills (ones you can complete via Quests) in Prophecies (and Factions) and the easiest Material farming ther as well. Then they put Faction-Points and the Powerleveling in In Factions. And lastly, they put Heroes in and allowed you access to them only by owning Nightfall. Heroes are the final piece of the puzzle of course because they make the previous tasks for gaining an advantage which I I listed, actually completeable solo or atleast attainable very rapidly. ....as opposed to settling for PuG idiots and Henhcmen when you only own 1 or 2 of the previous campaigns.
So in a round about way, you'll want all 3 campaigns at once to take the most advantage of the campaign you start in or end up in
This is probably only because I beta tested Prophecies and then purchased it, but I think you should play Prophecies first. Maybe it's due to the whole "Pre-Searing" thing, I don't know. But to answer your question, no, you're not dumb. You'll probably just appreciate Prophecies and Nightfall more should you choose to purchase them.

The only thing you might find bothersome with Factions is that it's the least easy to learn of the three, for a newbie.
