I would say like EQ2, WoW.  Typical mmo combat... proven to work.

its very clunky, in short. they ripped off the ui from WoW and made it crappier (somehow, not quite sure how they managed that). the animations are crappy, and its just very unoptimized.

Haven't played WoW, but UI and combat is simliar to EQ2, I don't see much difference really. You can counter spells if you are a mage which is a really cool feature.

One cool thing that many don't know is that there are sympathys and exploits (not illegal exploits) you can use and coordinate with other classes while fighting to do huge damage. You prob won't figure this out leveling to 5 :)

The UI is great, you can move anything, anywhere on the screen. I really don't find it clunky, but maybe I am just used to EQ2 and it is similar.

edit: the devs have stated that all combat and racial animations are not in game. this is still beta and there are some things that aren't finished.

I don't understand statements like this. All MMORPGs have similar UIs due to their similarities. Using your logic, I could just say WoW ripped off EQ becuase there's Menu's. Also, would you like to tell me what importance Animations hold in regards to UIs?

Yes, Vanguard does indeed have a combat system similar in many ways to the other MMOs out there, but I don't think I can really say that it was "ripped" off any particular game. What game really hasn't built off aspects of previous generation games?

Vanguard's combat is based off using abilities located on a hotkey bar, and the initial reaction of many players is "oh, more of the same button-mashing"...etc

But in reality there are some interesting aspects of Vanguard combat that many people do not seem to realize. There are chains that can be started after a critical hit (the opener) that allows the player to use to special skill that usually has some effect above and beyond the normal, like lots of direct damage (the finisher). The system is similar in some ways to EQ2's Heroic Opportunities, however its not based off a wheel, and doesn't require the input of other players.

Also for casters, they have the ability to "counter-spell" abilities cast by other mobs, and I would assume on the PVP server, counter spells by other players. The ability to counter a spell is based off perception, which is your ability to percieve what the enemy is doing and react to it.

Having limited experience playing the "tank" classes, I do not that they have many skills that help with aggro management (i.e. rescue) and certain skills like "block" that allow the melee fighter to counter the next attack by the mob, or protect a group member from damage. While the block skill might not seem very useful to some, it can come in handy in several ways. If you percieve that the next attack is going to be a high damage attack, you can use block to counter it, thereby preventing a situtation possbily castrophic for your healer, etc...

So Vanguard does have some unique aspects to its combat that makes it more than just the simple button mashing of other games, and it requires you to think in many situations.
