Travel...will it be a pain?

StellosStellos Member UncommonPosts: 1,491

VSoH is putting a great deal of emphasis on long, meaningful travel.  This sounds interesting at first glance; however, it seems like it may be a pain staking feature that the game could do without.  VSoH is said to not require hours of hours of gameplay to do something meaningful such as WoW.....but won't this long travel feature make this aspect worse?  MMORPGs need to get away from the hours on end that are spent playing to do something meaningful.  Ultima got this right back in the '97....I would hope that these "new gen mmos" will bring this concept back and stray from the 8-10 hour raid and rediculous, tedious tasks such as travel.

I'm not currently playing VSoH so I don't know how this applies in real gameplay.  Let me know if it's a problem or if it adds to the game.  Thanks.

I hope its a pain. Leave the teleporting bells and star wars warpers for the easier mmo's. I like the idea of to get where I want to be I might have to go places I dont like being.

I'll be the first one to tell you that travel in Vanguard is indeed difficult. If you want to get somewhere, initally you will have to run, and it does take a long time, especially if you are aggro dodging or fighting on the way, which is much of the time unless you are following the roads (and even then, the roads are not completely safe).

However, I think this adds ALOT to the experience. Never once did I feel like traveling to and from somewhere was really a waste of time. I always have fun just looking at the environment. Of course I am one of those people who have a computer that runs Vanguard with basically no lag...but still, it is a  thrilling experience. Plus, at  around level 10 you will probably have a horse, maybe even earlier if you forego buying armor. While this doesn't trivialize travel, it does speed it along fairly nicely.

Also, many classes have spells that allow you to increase your movement speed (Accelerate for the Psionicist comes to mind), and some have spells that increase other peoples movement speed (i.e. the Druid with Speed of the Wolf).

So yes, travel is difficult, but no, I do not find it tedious, at least not yet. .

I agree with Utadil. I can't explain it, but I just love the feeling of a massive Environment. It makes the world seem so daunting and gives you a sense of accomplishment when you do something crazy. Like, I dunno... make it across a Continent.

I have zero problems with going from point A to point B.  Maybe these other guys why say it's hard to travel are starting in different areas where it is, but for me it's been a breeze with only a few areas of aggro and they are easy enough to skirt around or kill through. The vastness of the game is what will draw a ton of people in, including me.  I love knowing that there is a ton of places to explore and new dungeons and places to see.

When starting out you pretty much kill in the same area for a few quests then are sent further out from where you began.  At this stage you can still easily run from one spot to another and you can also use your sprint ability will will move you along even faster.   At around level 10 you will be able to get your first mount and as you level up and the need grows for you to go further and further away different mounts will be avaiable - even flying mounts.

When you first begin you really have no need for travel faster than a simple run or using your sprint and there is plenty to do and kill, lots of quests, and if you get into the diplomacy even more (I'm hooked on this and the story line, which I usually don't read, if very well written).

When all is said and done, yeah some travel will be required - can't just teleport everywhere you want to go, but the mode of transportation will keep something to do well within your reach without having to hang around in the same spots all the time.

It's fun if you like traveling through a big empty world.

Think of driving on the 40 in Oklahoma.

You mean like driving down the 40 in Oklahoma in a 2006 BMW convertible or do you mean like driving down the 40 in Oklahoma in a '77 pinto?

    lol, Nemo38!

I've had fun traveling so far. Taking my time on my mount at level 14, harvesting resources and catching the sights along the way. Um... and avoiding roadside bandits and giant ants.

Travel is not too bad. A few classes have run buffs (shaman, ranger, druid, bard), you can get a horse pretty cheap, just over 12sp now. Traveling from one continent to another will take some time, but the continents are pretty big and you won't need to travel between them often.

Caravans are cool for grouping or raiding. One person makes a caravan (like a group) then everyone can log off except the one person to travel to the next destination. After three hours (to prepare for the next day of play) when the other people from the caravan log in, they have the option to log in where they camped (i.e. - Qalia) or they can log in where the caravan went to (i.e. - Thestra). This will make traveling around for raids and static group parties easier, just takes a little planning.

Thank you for your input.  It really helped me grasp the travel aspect of the game without yet playing.  Sounds unique and fun to me.

The travelling makes me think of EQ in the beginning. To me EQ lost alot of its appeal when they put in all the Portal Books etc. There was nothing like having to make a long run somewhere just hoping you could avoid all the mobs and hope you could remember where that zone line was exactly. So I welcome the travel, makes it feel more realistic/fantasy oriented which is what it is supposed to be

I ran from the farthest end of Qualia to catch the boat, and then when to Kojan. Then I ran across the entire Kojan, swam to a deserted island (a very big one ) and saw lots of housing plots. Then I swam back to Kojan, and ran across it again and took a boat  to the goblin area, I forget the name, ran across that, then went back to the boat and back to Kojan. Then I took the boat back to Qualia. I was meaning to go to Thestra too, but didn't find the right boat to take me there. I did all this at level 6, with no horse, and didn't really find it a pain, but a little slow. So, with a horse, or later on a flying mount, it should be fine.

Reminds me of AC1 before they got all portal crazy. And that game had no mounts. You wanted to run fast you put XP into your run skill

This question is more about transportation than travel, but here goes...

Can anyone in beta tell me if sorcerers have a spell similar to Evacuate from EQ?  The spell, in a pinch, would teleport the group outside a dungeon.  Also, will sorcerers be able to teleport groups or themselves like in EQ?

    Thanks!
