There should be incentive and consequence to killing someone as well as dying (consequence) and staying alive (reward).

The great thing is they mentioned that your character gets a bonus to stats for staying alive a long time -
    PEP system it's called

    http://tcos.com/en/gameworld/?id=statistics

    PeP system
The Personal experience Point (PeP) system grants characters bonuses to the attributes and states if the character stays alive and gains experience in combat. When a character dies all bonuses are lost and the PeP rank is reset. The bonuses are given based on the ranking below.

    Rank 0 - No bonus
Rank 1 - state bar zero point +1
Rank 2 - Minor body, mind, focus buff + state bar zero point +1
Rank 3 - Minor body, mind, focus buff + state bar zero point +2
Rank 4 - Moderate body, mind, focus buff + state bar zero point +2
Rank 5 - Moderate body, mind, focus buff + state bar zero point +3

When the states zero points are raised, the generation and degeneration effects will shift to these new points.

So, thats a good start. I think there should also be some sort of economic/fincancial gain or loss for killing or dying too, though.

Hmmm.. this could totally backfire too, and effectively kill of PvP like happened with kill streaks and titles in EQ2.

It doesn't take much for people to run from PvP (if they're that way inclined). A simple kill streak record listed on the official website; killing/dying to gain/lose titles etc.
If there's a bonus to staying alive, ie running and escaping from a possible fight or midfight, people will do it.

And unless it's very hard to escape from a PvP fight (unlike EQ2), people will just run at the first sign of a hard fight to protect their precious PeP tally.

Oh, and by no way am I using EQ2 as an example of 'good' PvP, just that this same sort of thing was used there (bonus for not dying and/or running) and it literally killed off the PvP.
SoE have finally gotten the balls to nerf evac, but until the titles go, people will evacuate at the first sign of blue and white con targets on track, and they still do. Way too often.

And on the note of focusing on gameplay, won't you spend more time
watching your attack roll thingy than looking at the screen? o.O hehe.

But I know jack about this game (slowly getting interested, but am def bored enough to try it hehe) so hopefully this issue is covered somehow?
Anyone know? Keeping in mind I have very little knowledge of TCoS, are there any principles in place to stop people spending 90% of the time running, 2% of the time fighting and the other 8% of the time on the forums bitching about someone who ran/ganked/etc etc?

Heh, trust me, I played UO in its heydey. THeft was more fun than PVP there. Why?

PVP degenerated into "Who could run faster on their horse due to lag while chugging pots."

Here's a hint, dex monkeys normally won because they could interrupt even GM wrestlers with supreme ease, and casting took so long. UO pvp was fun - IF you and your target had a good connection, and were of a similar skill set, and a red/blue/whatever ganksquad didn't turn up. Even then, it was "Bang on the other guy while chugging and applying bandages with UOASSIST. Get over it.

What was I thinking, bandaging in combat, I must be insane. I mean really, who the hell would want to heal themselves in combat, I'll wait until the fight's over, yea thats much better. What a great idea linking pots together is also, I mean why would I want to drink more than one type more than once every two minutes. I am truly crazy.

I guess a fight lasting more than a dozen or so seconds just can't hold anyones attention span these days. Thank goodness WOW took care of that nasty problem. Yea your right WOW rocks preteen's world's.

Yeah. Pretty much. There wasn't any point to UO pvp after a while because everyone played one of two (on Siege, three) archetypes for pvp and it was all the same. And because if you could drink that many constantly it would hideously unbalance the game.

And a dozen? Try a minute. In a battleground, that's a really long time. I love the way everything is for "little babies" and "preteens" when it doesn't agree with the opinion of people like you.

    Cute

Noone wants to play an item based game (or any other game, really) where you can loot everything from the corpse of someone else that they've taken the time to get. Someone earlier said that "hardcore gameplay like you describe is more desired by the 13-15 range of players". To be honest, I think they're right. I've got better things to do with my time than re-equip, having to go dungeon delving or crafting in UO constantly so I could pay for all the regs/armour/horses/potions/bandages was bad enough, but running for weeks on end to get one little chunk of loot so you get a major boost? No thanks.

Go play Tibia. An exciting game where you'll able to loot anyone you kill. Heck, you're even able to snatch other players' loot if you play your cards right.

I on the other hand think that TCoS' way of doing things will feel fresh and fun. I really don't get how this discussion has been able to continue for 9 pages or so, it really hasn't led anywhere (and I'm not doing any better myself ^_^). Just thought I'd comment. See ya!

you cant make everybody happy , its just not possile

there are who like hard punishment pvp With looting everything you have on you

Other likes pvp only if you choose to do so

other  like pvp areas open in all zones of the game (like eq2)

    etc

Isnt it just the best thing to split the servers up

Pve server wich has a couple of PVP open zones

PVP server for you die hard PVP's with all zones open and all loot can be taking from you

Even than people are not sattisfied!!1

I like PVP in the way eq2 has it but : without the titles (youl get rank boys)
