The tough part is finding the know-how, having the resources to get it done, and finding the right niche.
A perfect game would have been Lineage 2 when it first came out, i'm sure bot companies have made fortunes off of that game.
Me personally, when AION or a new game wtih tons of hype comes out, that doesn't suck, I'm going to look into botting it up for $$$. If you catch the market right, you can make a shitload without that much in resources.
I made 400-500 in diablo by selling duped gear for 2 weeks, had i started a year earlier, i would have made tens of thousands, but oh well, next time.
Twistid, you're tempting me too much to do this in EVE lol.
But in reality, if playing an MMO was your job, i think you'd end up hating it and getting bored.
Cryomatrix
I think they are clever ideas but the money is not big. I think maybe someday, some games will come that you can make huge money from playing them.
What's huge money for you? 3000 pesos? 3000 yen? 3000rmb? 300 pounds? But... now bakes the question, if you are making huge money, what are the company that made the game going to make?
I play video games to relax and have fun when I'm off work. If there was money on the line, it would induce stress and turn what was a game into more WORK.
It is legal If you read the rules of conduct you'll find out if its ok in that particular game or not, As long as you make sure you put something like "Im selling money i gained in the game, and not the property of Eve-online" Obviously make it much more explanitory.. but you get the idea. As long as you do that, its legal.
Actually you are quite wrong putting this line is a common con tactic used by gold/isk farmers to validate there stuff. Mainly becase the money you earn ingame is still the poroperty of the game company as is the account you used to earn it.
I shall repeat that all ingame money and items are the property of the game company as is the account you used to get the items.
There is no leagal way of earning cash from selling ingame items at places like E-bay.
However there are games out there that allow it for real such as Second life.

Making money both for personals and a company are not contradictory. the game just need a good business model for that.

More over its still forbidden in EVEs EULA to sell ISK directly, you can purchase GTCs through them, anything else is highly illegal
Though, there are games, like Planetropia, where people get earning out there investments as well :
Some time ago someone bought a whole SpaceStation on Planetropia for roundabout 120k $ Real Cash,
but through renting it, its assumed he has his investion already paid off.
Unfortunately, "being good" in a fair way at a MMORPG would require MMORPGs not to be the utter grindfest they are, where the only skill that counts is how much time you have in your hands. There's a contested not-MMORPG out there called Guild Wars that offers real money to the winners of the world tournament, and those prizes so far have gone to the very best guilds in the world.
P.S. If we're talking about illicit sales, selling a GW account with PvE characters in FoW armors or a high PvP rank seems quite profitable on eBay, although "fake" PvP titles are always easily spotted.

I think someday, games will be available that your winning and making money will depend on your innovative ideas and strategies you choose not the time you spend on game play.
Like some people pointed out there is Project entropia recently renamed for Entropia Universe and Second Life. Of course both of them cant really be called MMo in the way the original poster meant it but i will give a brief description of them about the money making part.
Gaming part:
Entropia Universe is more like a casino where you spend money hoping you will get something back. Pretty much everything you do need you to spend money, its like a slot machine where you have some control over you investment in the way that if you want to maximize your chance to win you have to be efficient by choosing the right weapon for the right monster for example (you wont use a gun that spend 1USD a shot to kill a monster that only need a gun that spend 0.01 USD a shot to kill it. Also your avatar get skill point in the same way like UO but there is no limit and the difference between a skilled character and one not skilled is not that big, but the skilled character will be a bit more efficient so will have more chance then you to win the pot for the same amount of money spend in the slot machine. Of course there is some way to make money without spending any in the game but this is neither fun nor easy.
Trading part
you can also invest and buy thing to sell them at a higher price.
Second Life is not really a game (there is no objective, no quest etc) even if there is a lot of game in it, it is more like a 3d internet. You can subscribe and enter the universe for free but if you want a server to host you site you need to pay for it. People make money by setting business and creating virtual things with the tool SL offer and other software (Photoshop, poser etc). If you want to make money in Second life you will probably need your own personal skills (texture, architecture, event planning, modeling, scripting and of course some imagination). Like the internet the thing that is the most advertised in Second life is porn and cyber sex since its lucrative but there its much more to it then that.
Both Entropia Universe and Second Life are not really newbie friendly , when you start you don’t really have a clue of what to do and how. You are pretty much on your own but in both of them there is a lot of player that are willing to help you.
well if you were good at it and played all the time you could sell your in game money to a big company. If you were good you could get a couple thousand dolla for playing it. I think what your tring to say is that all these tournaments are on console games that have prize money for the best at it. SOO you want a Tournament with a MMO and the only way to do that is for PVP.
