HI everyone,
just decided to give EQ2 a try, and bought the EOF DVD package. Now with 8M broadband I'm waiting 20 HOURS for the updates to complete.....even though I've set everything to download while I play.
What insanity is this? Is there any way to bypass this madness?
thanks

Its not that unusual. This isn't a small game. But with that, comes alot of goodness. Patience is a virtue.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
It may be grossly overestimating how long the download will take. If it truly takes more than 3 hours, there is a serious problem.
^^ above works fine!
and trust me, its WEEL worth your time
Welcome to EQ2, you will love it!
ill give you an extra tip to
When you have installed the game completely incl the expansion packs THEN
BACKUP that directory to a DVD (or 2) , next time something goed wrong, or you need to install your machine again
you only install the game from cd (or from direct2drive) , copy the backed-up folder and your almost ready to go
thats how i do it.
ps.
20 hours is indeed insane, the highest i got was 12 hours
good luck m8

Hi all. I was about to post almost this exact same question. Except I just bought the $9.99 "Classic" version of EQ 2, no expansions, just to try it out (I have no previous EQ experience at all). I started the updater and it started at 3 hours remaining, then very quickly dropped to about 1.5 hours, which seemed reasonable. I have a pretty nice DSL connection.
I came back to the computer about an hour later and it was up again to over 2 hours. Hmmm...check back later and after about 3 solid hours of updating, it said 6 hours, 56 minutes remaining! This is ridiculous. I killed it and restarted and now it's back to under an hour. Am I expected to sit at my PC and restart the updater every few minutes? Is Sony's bandwith being strained by all the Vanguard beta testers? It just seems to me that the average person who decides to try the game out, will give up long before the updates ever get completed. My only previous Sony experience was a week's trial of SW: Galaxies. The game didn't impress me, but I don't remember having this type of headaches getting it updated. Please tell me that it will get better...and that the game is worth the effort. Thanks.

You got the original EQ2, thats two years worth of patches to catch up on. Doesnt take a genius to see that your download could take awhile.

But I guess it takes one to point that out

Well "genius", as I stated in my post, I got the "Everquest 2 Classic" package, which was released on September 12, 2006. I didn't buy a dusty old box that has been on a shelf since November 2004. So I do not believe that I am downloading every single patch since launch day. And in any case, I fully expected to have several hours of updates, but my question arose from the fact that the estimated time for the updates keeps spiking upward. It is originally estimated at 3 hours...3.5 hours of patching later it is estimated at 6 hours, 56 minutes. That struck me as odd.
Sorry if all the numbers confused you.

SOE's downloader has never worked right, In the middle of downloading it finds more files you need and then ups the time, why it can't do this in the beginning is beyond me. Even the classic version I believe is just the core game no patches, I could be wrong but I don't remember them patching it first.
