Ok, this post by Pjure (AD Moderator) is the best I have seen to date.  This post is in answer to someone's VERY valid question of how to cancel the game.  The fact that they actually admit to this seems criminal...

"there is no way to completely cancel/erase your account using the dark and light website, you can switch to freedom package but that will cost 9.99$, but after that there is no monthly cost.

you do switch to freedom package here:

http://www.darkandlight.net/selfservice.php3

There are other ways to "cancel" your account but those ways are not official and they cant be found on this website.

(check click and buy website)

keeping the thread open in case anyone of the other forum members want to add something.

There has been problems with the billing but in theory if you have a freedom account you should not receive any more bills or invoices.

Ayup. Completely, totally and absolutely illegal. Refer the goons to this and at least in the USA they may be prevented from selling anything at all.

Sorry. Erm what!? You have to pay to cancel the subscription... wow.

I think they're based in a country that just joined the European Union at the beginning of this year, hopefully that will mean they get shut down much quicker.

This is crazy, surely you just cancel the payment no? That would be terminating the contract. Mustn't be legal. Just get the credit card company to refuse charges... naive?

Nothing new really, I mentioned the no account cancellation already in "the SoG Instruction Booklet//Guide + Maps "-sticky when game was launched. AlchemicDreams doesn't mind illegal methods since they are still getting paid by Farlan for "support" & forum moderation.

  • CholaynaCholayna Member Posts: 1,604

bah, they tried to pull a "purchase before ready, cash upfront, with no refund whatsoever at any time even if you cancel before its actually ready and delivered to you".

Lasted awhile, a few ppl believed they could actually keep their money.

A big bruhaha developed and they turned around and said "ok, we will let you refund in the next two weeks only, even though we havent delivered it yet and it still wont be delivered until a few months from now but you only have these current two weeks to refund".

Mixed in with this, they said that SOG was the prelude to DNL.."a FREE standalone game to gift our loyal fans".

This was wrapped up in the original purchase tho.

Sooooo then they said you are playing SOG so you cant refund even though the purchase was based on DNL. Sooo they were trying to say that although we said it was "free", you cannot refund on the real game cuz you played the SOG FREE game. So basically, they were trying to place the purchase transaction on the SOG FREE portion of package that was not, at that point , completely delivered.

Sooooo, the backlash was still hitting the fan and the purchase processing company was going through hell with the demands for refunds and the billing etc etc.

Sooo THEN they said okay, you have a deadline now, we extended the refund period but again, we have still not delivered the original purchase item itself and the deadline ends before we plan to deliver it. We are Gods, we are doing you a favor and giving our blessing for a refund before its actually "shipped" (delivered) to you (oh yeah, it was download only too, bittorrent, no cd)

During all this, many many ppl were double charged and a couple who bothered to post on their forums were in fact triple and quad charged when they tried to refund!!!

Believe it or not, many many believed they could actually get away with this! Several THOUSAND however did indeed obtain their refunds but there are those that believed every word to come out of Farlans mouth even AFTER being shown that what they are doing is extremely illegal and well,. sleazy as hell.

A simple call to the credit card company, explaining the situation and the csr's are eager to jump on this transaction, some in horror, most in disgust and a few with some giggles, and slam the chargeback to them.

THEN they go through their old billing and well....charge them again!!!

and in a few cases, again and again!!

A year later, Farlan is still trying to bill ppl on a seemingly regular basis if not for the game itself, then for the montly charge even though these ppl may have never even got to play (the game is borked) , only played the first two weeks of the SOG fiasco (which turned out to really be the REAL game instead of the 'standalone with nothing to do with DNL" they screamed across their pages), or refunded even before DNL came out.

All through this, there was indeed no way to cancel anything within their own system. Workarounds with C&B and your own credit card company denying any charges from either company have seemed to stem it a bit.

Oh! Then Farlan took it upon themselves to change your "no monthly fee right now cuz we know you are all pissed and dont like our game but give us more time with a free montly account, we still want you to pay #39.99 tho'"  to a master since it was free. Soooo without telling you, without your knowledge your account was changed. Then when the "free" period ended, it was up to YOU, without any notice or even knowledge that it was changed in the first place,. it was up to YOU to change it to the "freedom" if you didnt want to be charged the montly fee, but it would cost you the monthly fee anyway to do this. Soooooo , alll those ppl that were playing the "free months until this all dies down but we are telling you we need the time to fix stuff but we really arent gonna really fix anything, we just want the fury to die down-- damage control ya know?" got sent a bill that they owe Farlan for that cuz they (the customer) didnt change it back and its not Farlans fault so pay up.

To cancel within the DNL system, it will indeed cost you to change the "type" of account you have to a "freedom" account (kinda like pay- as -you -go  setup) . There is a $9.99 charge to do this. This effectively puts you in the "Im not a monthly sucker anyway" category and supposedly takes you off the regular billing.

BUT! Ppl who have even followed this "procedure" have been continuously billed. A recent redo of  the billing cycle of everybody and anybody whoever whenever however have played this game got billing notices again. Although it would appear that most of them now are the ones who havent changed their C&B info or told their credit card company to deny any charges from C&B or Farlan. There are some however that did all that and STILL got a bill.

Sooo....do ya honestly think this is a real game? Do ya honestly think this is just a couple of sincere yet inexperienced game developers?

    "....the world may never know".....

    wow

    simply WOW

i never got closer to this game than a couple stress tests (which was more than enough)

but i now understand why they are constantly having billing "problems"

they are hoping some people will get so fed up with their spaming that they fork over 10 bucks - wringing that last little bit of cash out this "game"

I had to jump through many hoops to get my cancelation from DnL. And I think that the only reason I don't get harrassed by them any longer is that I displayed my ANGER towards them. That is probably the main reason I got banned from their forums as well. (In other words...they don't want me back!)  I'm not typically an angry person but when I get frustrated at every turn my "ire" gets tweaked...perhaps others should follow suit.

Played Wow, D and L, AOC, GW, Eve, Rift and many more insignificant games.

  • CholaynaCholayna Member Posts: 1,604

LOL simply showing them "the errors of their ways" in a bit of anger and logic and common sense and they ban you, forget about you and try to ignore you and the logic/common sense you brought it. Anytime anyone else may think in a logical, non-sucker way, they are dampened in a flash! LOL

I kinda havta agree with ya there tho Teph. I and a few of my colleagues displayed our anger quite sufficiently and also told them that I do in fact have my credit card company and their own long arms around the world to back me up. Havent had any problems since the refund within the first two weeks of SOG.

Just when I thought I'd squeezed all the amusement value out of this donkey...

Though really businesses can do just about anything without actually committing a crime. If businesses doing dodgy things had to worry about jailtime and to pay extra legal insurance to cover that possibility they'd have less money to give to politicians!!!

This is certainly a gem and in a sane world would in and of itself be sufficient grounds for an enormous instant fine from a suitable government consumer protection agency.

Ahhh, so they finally admit it!

    1. Yes, their unwillingness to honor a "cancel" request is illegal.
    2. This happened to me, also. They tried continually rebilling me until I told them very directly that their next erroneous bill would result in legal action.
    3. When they didn't take me seriously, I blocked all transactions from Click and Buy to my bank account, then reported their last few transactions as fraudulent and unauthorized. (I was a subscribed from June to July; they mysteriously started rebilling me in October, after listing my subscription as "canceled" around July 20th).
    4. Then I filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the Washington State Attorney General. Did DnL think I was kidding?
    5. I encourage you to do the same. Unless you *need* to use Click and Buy for something (sources tell me that it's mostly for porno), I suggest putting a "stop payment" on this merchant and consulting with your bank about your options.

Well, not so much "play the game", but rather "test a Beta (or Alpha;  that part is debateable)."

hmmmm....ya know they seem to be very well at ripping ppl off --- maybe they shoulda made a mmoRipPeopleGood demo to show off their sleazy, if not illegal should be, total big world of ripoff abilities. Deny and Lie expansion set : Pay to cancel and keep getting billed forever! Least the fan base can "stick around" awhile that way

Cancelling my original Pioneer account wasn't so bad.  It was way before the game was released, I think around their 4th or 5th delay.  ClickandBuy cancelled it right away.

Then, after getting a newsletter from Farlan about DnL, I accidentally clicked something that took me to my account page and somehow, I once again purchased the game.  It sounds stupid, I know, but it happened, and I immediately contacted both Dark and Light and ClickandBuy to explain the mistake and cancel.

This was a very long struggle, starting back in September of 2006, and just ended yesterday.  I had to send E-mail after E-mail, filled out refund forms and constantly keep track of what was going on with ClickandBuy and Farlan.  ClickandBuy confirmed my cancellation on Nov. 22, 2006, but shortly afterward, I was told that my account was in arrears and that I had to pay for the game.

I don't know how and why, but again I was after Farlan and ClickandBuy trying to get this cancelled.  ClickandBuy threatened a Collection Agency.  I sent them all of the correspondence I had sent and recieved, and 2 days later they once again cancelled the purchase and said I did not owe anything.

I am expecting a notice from ClickandBuy soon asking for payment for something I never purchased and definitely don't want soon.  I don't even blame them.  The only mistake they made was doing business with Farlan

I cancelled about a year ago, February to be exact (well, I guess that's not really exact, but I digress). In June I was billed $60 C&B. I called them and told them I had cancelled my account, and that I didn't owe anything. They said, yes, my account was cancelled, so there's no way they charged my debit card.

After going up the chain of command, I finally convinced them thay they did charge my card, and the charge was reversed in about 10 days.

A couple weeks later, it happened again. This time I asked directly for the person I had spoken with before (also be sure to get a name, because people promise things they don't intend to own up to) and told her that they had 24 hours to credit me back, or I was going to have my lawyer contact them (of course, I don't have a lawyer). Sure enough, the next day I got a credit.

Now, just about a month ago I received 3 emails all saying I owed $60 plus an additionaly $10. In the end, the last email said I owed $80 (Since there was no way to charge me, it was pretty moot, but still). After each email I sent Click and Buy as well as the Support account for DnL an email threatening legal action, as well as saying I was reporting them to the BBB (Better Business Beaureau).

After about a week I received two emails, both from DnL saying they sent out the invoice by mistake, that there was a bug in the system that auto generated these emails, and that I did not owe anything.

    Morale of all our stories:

Don't trust any non-reputable person/company you can't easily find and punch square in the Nuts within a reasonable amount of time.

Farlan sits a thousand miles away on their diseased plagued island sending out false invoices hoping some poor schmos will still pay them money. If these guys lived down the street from me, I could have resolved this issue in 15 minutes.

I will NEVER participate in a scam like this ever again. Lesson learned.

Count me in, only I'm bringing along a contract that requires them to pay me $59.99 a month for the next fifty years. They can cancel at anytime, but it will cost them a billion dollars. Or they can switch to the 'Freedom Package' which is only $49.99 a month, plus a $10.00 a month service charge.

They don't have to agree or sign, because in the contract it's going to say 'By sending me emails, you agree to all Terms of Serivce, you lousy bastards'.

I think there is a way you could get your CC company to stop paying them. Maybe even demand some money back? Someone check that up.

I am so glad I didn't even try that game. So many promises and didn't even came close...
