Why did we choose this one? You don't want to know.
Even to myself I'm a genius
In my opinion, and that is all it is...
MMORPG gaming gained its original popularity with Everquest (not to be confused with Everquest II) and you can still get your feet wet playing that game if you want, though it has gone through so many changes that many people don't recognize the game anymore. They do have a couple of servers that allow you to play the game much more like it was in the beginning, but that is really only attractive to old time players for nostalgic reasons.
I believe that World of Warcraft became the natural successor to the original Everquest and has taken off in a crazy way attracting people in the millions. You can be assured a quick learning curve, simple game mechanics and lots of people to play with in WOW. Also, if you like to see your achievement, you will see it in WOW as you level up pretty quickly.
Everquest II is very popular for some players who swear by the more realistic graphic choices and mid range leveling speed. (Though the game currently levels very quickly by comparison to when it was released.) Recent expansions have made the world of Norrath in EQII an even more interesting place to adventure.
If you are more into Science Fiction than Fantasy settings, then you might try Galaxies, but beware a game that has changed so frequently and so drastically that it no longer resembles the original game concept.
Just my opinion, but I would start with WOW or EQII and have fun.

Did you look on a game shelf and pick the three titles sitting there for your choices? Ah well
WOW and EQ have similar gameplay, WOW is easier to get into, EQ is more challenging in a number of ways.
SWG is broken, Sony Online Entertainment raped it brutally with a telephone pole, stay as far away from its all but empty servers as you can.
The above posters suggested WOW because they think all people that don't have a clue should stay there, which ought to give you some idea of its community.
My suggestion would be, none of the above, do some indepth research and come up with a play style you like and want to join in on. Most games offer free trials, I would highly suggest trying a game out before giving them a cent. Start with the list of released games on the left.
Games I would consider worth looking into and any significant problems with them, in alphabetical order. Most of these I don't personally like one bit, I'm simply trying to give you a good range:
Anarchy Online (old, very high learning curve)
Auto Assault (somewhat buggy)
City of Heros/Villains (highly repetitive)
EVE Online (very high learning curve)
Everquest 1/2 (high price to get all expansions)
Guild Wars (very short content)
Saga of Ryzom (having financial difficulty, game's future is in question)
Shadowbane (zero CS support, servers are being maintained by sympathetic developer's pocket money)
Silkroad Online (heavy amounts of "grind")
Ultima Online (very old)
WOW (extremely poor community and customer service)

I laugh at you... Get a clue ))))))))
Ive made about 10 tickets in my WoW career, and all of them have been replied, either by a standard answer, or by actual ingame contant.

True, but Silkroad is probably the best of its kind, he might as well see it for himself, its not going to cost him anything, but in any case...

wow, an actual ingame contact, you make it sound like thats a rare thing. I hate to break it to you, but "standard" cut and paste answers, don't cut it. Especcially on the numerous occaisions when the "standard" answer has little to nothing to do with my or another's problem, and yes I am speaking from personal experience.
