Ok I was over at the Eve site looking at the gerneral forums, when I came accross a locked thread.  I dont have an Eve account so I going to ask here.

If I pay for one month, train a skill to level four, set for the long training to level V, cancel my account.  And then come back 28-30 days later to start skill training all over to another level V skill.  This can still be done?  Does anyone see somthing wrong here?

has always worked for me in the past. Not that I intentionally did it, just quit having left lvl V skill training and returned later and it finishes.

As far as I know it still works that way and I can't really see its a problem. There was talk of stopping it but that seems to have not gone in.

Yes, it can be done. Skill training continues even if the account is inactive.

However, you have to pay for EVE in at least month-long blocks, and you cant really cancel your account - it just doesn't renew. Best-case is that you pay only half the time.

Short answer is Yes skills still learn even if your subscription is not up.

No, why would it be a problem? Skill training does not factor all that much in playing the game.

Yes it can be done.  In fact it's one of the features they advertize.  No, nothing is wrong because anyone can do it and it's actually a great feature if you want to go try another game for a bit.

As to another poster's comment about only getting about half the skill free that's totally untrue.  Say, just as an example, I wanted to train Battleships to V (38day skill) while I try out... say... Oblivion... because I know that when I go into a single player game I generally play it till I finish it.  And I know Oblivion will take me quite some time to finish so....

I plan ahead a bit... I know my sub expires on X date... so I train shorter skills till the day before my account expires.  the day before it expires I start training Battleships V and then cancel my account.

I then go pick up oblivion, install it and play till I'm done.  Say it takes me 33 days or so... 33 days later I resubscribe to EVE and only have to wait 5 days for BS V to complete..... if it took 40 days to finish oblivion?  COOL!  I just got 38 free days of training and when I resub I have BS 5 already trained.

(Most folks re-sub when they know the skill is about to finish anyway).

A nice feature of this, if you're smart.  When you decide you don't want to play anymore you set a long ass skill training so that if you ever DO come back you have a nice present waiting for you.  IE: That long honking skill is done :)

Anyway, yeah, it can be done and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Full disclosure: They have talked about implementing a skill-training queue. If they do that you can bet only current accounts would train. On the other hand it's been discussed for a long time already so may not be implemented for years (if ever).

Actually from the Dev comments and discussions the way it would work is the Queue would only work for subscribed accounts.  For cancelled accounts the Queue would not function and only the currently active skill would continue training once the subscription expired.

So you can't Queue if you aren't maintaining the account.

And yeah... it's been under discussion for a very very long time.  They haven't decided if they want to do it or not.  It's bound to eventually happen in some form or another.  My guess is they'll implement something that'll allow you to queue up to like 3 skills, maybe 4.  And, as I said, only function on a subscribed account.  They already have the ability to lock features to only subscribed accounts (note some skills CANNOT be trained by a trial, even if they meet the pre-requisites)  so it would just be a matter of assigning that flag to the queue ability.

You can also if you go away for a month or more (up to 7 I think) put your account on hold where you havent cancelled but you cannot log in. Then you pick up where you left off. Saves you having to pay if you are away on business for a few months.

It's fully accepted to do this, and as some of the newer capital era skills take longer and longer, it can even be viable.

However, you always run afoul of the economics of it unless you normally purchase gametime 1 month at a time.  This is part of the reason why they give you a steep discount (+25%) if you purchase in large blocks.  I normally subscribe in blocks of 6months to a year (131 USD).  This is such a piddling sum in the scheme of things that I generally think nothing of going on vacation from the internets.  The subscription rate basically boils down to 32cents per day.

I have plenty of habits that cost more than that.  That's about the price of one cigarette, but I don't smoke, so I'm ahead.

EVE is very easy to enjoy on a casual basis when you can just say, "Oh I've lost 32 cents worth of skill training today.  Buhu."
