I'm only saying that because I havent' played Age of Conan. I don't know, AoC might be a piece of crap, but at least there's still the potential that it might be good.
I've played the Vanguard beta. It's ok. Not horrible, not great, just OK. I think it will be fun until WAR comes out. Of course it comepletely lacks any real PvP, and I think players want that in MMORPGs these days. Not FFA PvP like pre-trammel Ultima Online. Those days are gone. But some RvR to take a break from PvE.
By the time WAR releases, Warcraft will be the "been there done that" game. Yes, it's hugely popular, and lots of players had a blast playing it. I didn't care for it much, because the 1-60 game was sadly lacking when it comes to grouping, and that's what I like in an MMORPG, good grouping. Maybe WAR will have good grouping in the PvE game, I'm not sure.
Lord of the Rings? I have no hopes for that one. I think it's gonna be another Star Wars Galaxies. Great Intellectual Property, not so great game. The IP will get you some initial subscriptions, but you can't keep 'em unless you have a good game.
DAoC was my favorite MMORPG so far, because of the RvR.
Unfortunately it's gonna be a while before WAR sees the store shelves. Oh well. Until then I'll kill some monsters in Vanguard.

I'm not sure juding AoC this early in beta is a good way to draw conclusions.
But for the main idea I agree, WAR and AoC seem to generating a lot of interest. They definately are the upcoming MMO's I'm lookig forward to. Darkfall could be in the mix but it doesn't seem to have as much wind in it's sails as these games.
I mean...I've checked a few screens of vanguard, seen the trailers...but it doesn't look that great to me, as it is now, at least.
Oh whatever, I g2g, but hey, keep this thread alive, comparison between AoC and WAR could be very interesting in the future.
well, its quite simple to understand anyways :P
the "old" generation of MMOs are not as populare as the new ones.
people want pvp, innovation, innovation and pvp.
age of conan is probably the most innovating, original system in comparison of any of the other big MMOs. this wouldnt be aquired without the mature rating tho :P
WAR does have its renewed features.
im thinking the reason, why WAR do have the greater population(atleast i think it does) is because warhammer isnt really an old story line :P but rather a large battle being "replay" over and over again.
this appeals to the younger crowd because we dont have to catch up with <<how old conan, the barbarian is>> years of
history.
and ofcourse the older Warhammer players
AoC however has almost no appeal to me. I have watched most of the videos and the combat looks neat but I just don't like the setting of the game.
Oh well time will tell which ones are a success or not.

I think WAR is going to the hardcore PvP MMO hands down since you can level from PvP. AoC also appeals though with the player run cities I look forward to seeing how that turns out. I do like the way Fury looks hope those guys make it out soon.
Another thing is that WAR apparently won't require any raiding at all, while in AOC you will have the old 'raid or be second rate' choice. I think that's going to make a big difference for a lot of people who've gotten fed up with WOW's raid-oriented style.

I feel the same way! Although I'm sure that some players love huge raids for the best gear, I honestly prefer smaller group content, so I can run about with a few close friends. There is not realy any good reason why I should be prevented from attaining the same quality of gear as my raiding counterparts, as long as we experience, endure, and overcome challenges of the same difficulty.
My husband and I had been really interested in the upcoming Age of Conan; he enjoys Robert E. Howard's Conan stories, while I particularly like Howard's other famous character, Solomon Kane. Then we happened upon some developer comments, in which the designers were essentially defending the 'best gear comes from raids' mentality and/or offering a lot of shady, not-really-an-answer responses to serious questions (which I became so tired of from the teams at World of Warcraft). So, while I'm sure that Age of Conan will be a lovely game, it's probably not for me---I'll just have to wait and see.
I'm 'waiting and seeing' about Warhammer Online, too, though as a Warhammer fangirl who fondly recalls earlier years of playing (or watching, as I was never terribly great with strategy) the game with boys, I must say that I'm holding very high expectations.
I think Fallen Earth will be some competition for WAR too, as it really looks promising. The crafting system, and the way they're having it so that 95% of the gear available in the game is gotten with their crafting system sounds awesome.
AoC sounds pretty good, and i'll definately be having a look at that one. But if WAR is going to be what they're promising, then it's gonna blow the competition away. As said, PvP seems to be what people are focusing on nowadays and with other games (like WoW), that have implemented PvP just because it's something else to do, then once again WAR will wipe the floor with them.
I honestly don't understand why developers don't give objectives and meaning to PvPing, because without a goal it's just boring.

WAR seems to be embracing the philosophy of 'play the game, have fun with it, get your stuff doing something you enjoy, then smash some greenskins' while AOC is going for a lot of 'force the player to do this' mechanics, like required raiding and numerous character options only available if you're in a guild and have approval of the GM (no joke). WAR is looking to bring in gamers, the kind of people who play games because they enjoy them and who will join a guild with friends, while AOC seems to be going for more of the basement-dweller type, the ones who get their fun from running guilds and forcing other players to put up with their nonsense because you need the guild to get anywhere.
I don't know that WAR will be all that popular amongst the traditional MMO crowd, which tends to like grinds and forced content that lets them boss other people around, but I think that it, like WOW, will bring in a lot of non-MMO gamers and will yank some of WOW's non-traditional MMO players.
I also think a lot of AOC hypers are going to be disappointed when the 'M' rating just means that people who want blood and boobies like it, not that it magically makes the community actually mature.
They don't even keep the camera in one place because they realize how crappy it is. Also if you pause it to see more of the battle, there's obviously only maybe 3 character models redone over and over for the battle and it appears that the graphics are turned down.
Also no facial animations.
This video pretty much sealed me as a WAR player even after the alpha footage that EA Mythic released that was crappy.
It basically comes down to... if you want to have fun and kill people, play WAR. If you want to look at pretty scenery and buy a new computer, play AoC.
Not trying to bash AoC, just was sadly dissapointed with everything in this new video except for the Scenery, which is absolutely amazing.
EDIT: To Pantastic: yay we're on the same page. (in terms of thought processes, not thread pages. )

I live to fight, and fight to live.
still, i dont play games for graphics, i play games for gameplay, so im probably going to try it. oh no, made by F.U.ncom, forget it.

Well I think wow had hoped that the huge raiding would bring people together. It really only made people tolerate others long enough to get their gear and then they were gone.

I am sure that some people met many good friends through raiding. I personally prefer meeting with smaller groups of people, though; I feel as though I can get to know them better that way, and they really stand out instead of being just another 'face in the mob'.
I have nothing against raiding, really---I even enjoyed several raids in World of Warcraft the first few times through. A few people love raiding, and should be able to indulge in such gameplay. What I have a problem with is the rather odd idea that large groups of players ('raid' groups) deserve better gear from their special content which no player can enjoy in a small group. Arguably, in some games, 'raid' dungeons are slightly more challenging than small group dungeons. But that does not have to be the case at all; encounters should be appropriately scaled to the number of players engaging in one, so the challenge is always equal and so are the rewards.
Anyone here who has engaged in much balancing of encounters for D&D or whatnot is well-versed in this type of design. Unfortunately, some MMORPG creators seem to fall into the trap of not figuring out how to tweak the game mechanics in order to scale encounters, so they simply boost some special monster's abilities and therefore require a huge number of people to take it down, and call this 'more difficult'. If the game mechanics were well-designed, then this should not need to be the case, and a solo encounter would be able to be just as challenging, and net just as good of a reward, as a forty-person raid.
Thankfully, most MMORPGs are beginning to shy away from this poor design scheme. I am all for giving raiders content---but they should not receive better rewards than someone who does not raid, who should be able to engage in encounters that offer the same level of challenge.

Killed AoC for me there...
MMO's Played: 20 , Closed Beta: 9 , Open Beta: 3 , Currently:Warhammer Beta
Guild: Futilez
hey man look at age of conan no elfs and orcs
iv followed both fo these gams very closly but im liking age of conan better the pve looks awsome and the pvp is becomming the best around main reason PVP skills and the blood money buying thing just for PVP and getting skills just for PVP i like that alot
and the seige crafter will make the siegeing castles aspect even more fun then it already is FUNCON. is a great compain and i would trust the making of a game like AOC to one other
Mythic
been playing warhammer minatures for years now but AoC will bring the guild system even further then it is now guilds will be very important and you must pick a good one my vote would be for AoC no question
however i will pick up WAR Mythic wont disapoint
DAOC foever
And this is a big reason why my vote is definately not for AOC. I don't consider guilds that have members solely because they need the guild to advance in-game to be good guilds at all, regardless of how much video game loot or conquests they acquire. The only guilds that I consider even worth joining, much less good, are guilds that would stick together even if there was no game-mechanical need to stick together. AOC is aiming for the 'join one of the uberguilds or you're a scrub' crowd, while WAR is aiming for the 'get together with your friends and play an enjoyable game' crowd.
WAR is being designed around PvP/RvR. PvE, Hunting, Questing etc is all on the side, they want people to sign up because they want to PvP.
AoC is another "cover all bases" MMORPG, looking like a high quality one though.
As someone said, i'm also hoping that WAR won't be one of those games where you need a 40+ man guild to have some fun. Like WoW you need 40+ people for end-game stuff, and i hate it, i'd much prefer to play a game where you don't need to recruit random people for the sake of making up numbers. It always results in having complete and utter wankers, and having to put up with them but once they get what they want they "jump ship", it's a really frustrating system.

Lord of The Rings i think will have as good as chance of AoC or WAR the graphics are sweet in it plus the quest system looks terific in LotRO
it will definatly be better then DDO Turbine has definatly learned from their mistakes and LotRO will be Turbines BIG Hit
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
LOTRO is a game for carebears and cowards afraid of a good fight! Isn't that game all PvE? How can you dare to utter that name in the same paragraph as WAR and Conan.
