Multi player ships.

Me and a group of friends are in the mood to be pirates. Currently
its a tossup between vanguard and Pirates of the Burning Sea.

So, does Pirates of the Burning Sea have multi player ships? Or are you your ship....

Vanguard has multiplayer ships... but most likely no were near the depth of sea
faring Pirates of the Burning Sea has.

Anyone shed some light on the subject?

OK, I guess this question is answered for me, I was wondering if mutliple people manned a ship or you manned it yourself with a computer controlled crew. I'd rather have it multiple people, but you could hire people to sail the seas with you if one of your crew members are offline or something like that. image

Oh well, sailing the seas with a ship sounds like heaps of fun anyway, you can tell I haven't done much research on this game, but just the word "Pirates" appeals to me strongly already! Haha.image

I can't believe I never knew about this until today, but ships are a one man crew in PotBS, which is absolutely hilarious, and the single reason why I won't be playing this mmo.  Imagine what speed, agility, knowledge, strength, and endurance a captain of a frigate, or larger class ship must possess in order to keep it afloat and sailing . . . it's really stupid that PotBS is one player ships only, with no multiplayer ship options.  Yay for the solo player, though, and a major BAH for the roleplayer or anyone looking for a semi-realistic representation of sailing in the Carribbean during this time period.  It's going to be like everyone in overgrown Kayaks with guns . . .

You play as the captain, your ship has an NPC crew that controls the ship and follows your orders. Your captain does not single handedly control the entire ship. Might want to try reading a bit about the game before you knock it, otherwise you might end up looking like an ignorant crybaby.

I was talking about one "player" ships, and said nothing about other characters on board.  It limits the scope of the game when the only player onboard is you, the captain.  I was thinking that other players could join you and a whole new part of the game would open up as players tried to work together to run a ship most efficiently.  I knew that ships were commanded by a single player, but I figured that others could join you if they wanted to form a group, or crew, but it seems that its going to be like Auto Assault's convoy system instead, and I'm disappointed about that.

BTW fastback, it's still not too late to redeem yourself from being thought of as a flamer and a troll on this site.  You only have 8 posts afterall, so maybe if you post more constructive things instead of insults, people would think better of you.

Actually, you were commenting on the lack of multiplayer ships creating a non-realistic ship combat simulation because it would be like sailing a "big kayak". That's incorrect, the ships are fully manned. From one of your posts in the Voyage Century forum:

Originally posted by Tymora By pirates, do you mean Pirates of the Burning Sea?  If that is really the case in that mmorpg, I am no longer interested.  There HAS to be multiplayer ships!  It's not like we're riding around on horseback with our single character, these ships needed men to sail them.  I can see how it would create a problem for solo players, but a one man frigate seems really, really stupid to me . . .Does anyone how's been in the Voyage Century open beta know anything about this?  It would save me the trouble of downloading and installing if there were no multiplayer ships.

You're just confused is all, the ships aren't being manned by one person. Only PotCO is that dumb.

As for the merit of multi-user ships, you really want to be the guy that hauls rope? Even if the positions are something cool like, let's say, firing cannons, that means some poor bastard has to just turn the ship all over the place. Explain how that's fun. Wouldn't you rather join your friends side by side in your own ships, flying your own flags? You can attack your foes from multiple angles, set traps for them to fall into, even shield eachother from cannonballs if you get your ship in between an ally and your enemy. Sounds a lot funner to me.

Oh and thanks for the tip, I don't know what I'd do if a bunch of people from a video game forum with elf avatars didn't like me.

Please, go ahead and explain to all of us what exactly is fun and what is not in video games.

Again, by one man ship I should have wrote one player ship.  I'm sure Flying Labs could have thought up some form of gameplay that would be fun other than hauling rope . . . I mean crafting dosn't seem all that much fun to me in most mmorpgs and it is very popular.   Couldn't there be something created for multiple players to work together on one ship to make cooperative gameplay?  Sorry but I find this lack of creativity a total let down and that's why I am no longer interested.

Naval combat may still turn out to be realistic, but with one player steering, firing cannons, and doing other tasks that a crew would normally do, it could either get so tedious with so much micromanagement.   Or it could be so simplified that it could get old fast, like the other driving mmo thats out now and has been criticized alot for its repetitive gameplay.

You obviously don't care what people think about you when you insult someone you don't know at all because of a comment on a video game forum.

Oi, it's called an opinion. I thought this was a forum, not a flame war. You critisize him so much you make yourself sound like an ass. A member asked a question, it was answered, let it go. Start a new thread if you want to voice your opinion on it.

You can fight ships together as they have said though.  Think of the ship "with npc crew" as your aviator.  You and your friends sail out in a fleet and engage the enemy together.  Captains do give the orders to preform the various evolutions.  It's going to be like you are ordering your npc crew to do the evolutions, while discussing with your friends how your going to "cross the T" or whatever.  I think this one has a lot of potential.  I want to give it a try and see, hope if I do I see you there too.

Now having said that, It's this one or Vanguard I thinkimage

Multiplayer ships would be very annoying if you have to fill every crew member on a ship with players, some of the ships had 200+ crew.

I for one wouldn't want to be swabbing decks or any of that rubbish.

The player is the captain and that's the best way imo.

Exactly, the logic of wanting multiplayer ships is flawed. Is there any other game where this mechanic would be fun? Would you like to be a to be the guy who runs the Night Elf around in WoW while your friend fires the arrows? Don't get hung up on the idea that it's a ship, it's an avatar, and while hypothetically it might seem like a good idea, in practice it would not be as fun as you're imagining it.

Ye multiplayer ships would be so awesome, I've played a pirate wars game from the Garry's Mod (a half -life 2 mod) and each team had a captain and some guys using the cannons, it was so awesome to play with other members on a ship because you dont feel alone that way, it really gives you that 'this is so amazing and awesome' feeling ^^

    Arr!

Who wants to be Gunner #4 on a multi-player ship?  What I am supposed to do while sailing?  Oil the cannons?  Flying Lab took the best job and gave it to everyone...Captain.  Think I want to be the low man on the ship that mops up the deck?  No, I want to be the Captain, and I think you'll find that most people agree.

    Very good logic.

I don't think the choice to have only one player pe rship was all though disastrous. The games intent was always to potray the life of being a captian. I do think it would be intresting to have real player crews but .. the level of mechanics involved would be fairly extensive.

Due to the fact your giving orders to your crew in Potbs you dont persay fire a cannon or raise a sail. You simply order it. To have a real player crew youd need to make ships have interaction points and have quite a number of skill variables added. Much like adding land combat to the game slowed the progress of POTBS, adding player crews would. Is it a bad idea, Heck no!

I love the idea. I think it needs to be added on as a expasion considering the time involved in adding in the content needed.

The issue mite arise as to how do you man a ship without players against a Npc ran ship..  hrmm then agian maybe not.

Whatever the case may be I still enjoy the genre of sea captian mmorpgs. After playing VC Im hooked and cant wait for Potbs.

The only way I have seen to have more then one player on a ship, that works is on Puzzle Pirates, but that only works because if your the captain of the ship, you do a puzzle and that gives you something to do (of course the better you do at the station the more it helps the ship) I still play puzzle pirates every now and again now and enjoy it, mostly for the community these days. That were I heard about this game from and I'm looking foward to it as it will be something different to the games that are out there, thank god.

Multi-player ships are like the 2 dollar bill, sounds good, but if they did have it, we would find it just didn't catch on.
