Why no group based games anymore?

I know some games require raiding to get good stuff.  I am talking about getting on a new game and it always being a solofest game.  Whats the point of making an MMO if everyone just solos their way to the top and only groups to get good items.  My opinion is that there are not enough rewards in these games to make people want to group.  For instance a lot of MMOs give you decreases in xp when in a group.  Basically i get into a game to find a person wont even stop to say hi anymore nor do you ever see LFGs in games anymore unless its time for a dungeon.

    a) people are lazy

    b) developers are so afraid of creating something special that just might fluke they'll cater for the average idiot

Funny thing is, it's exactly the non-original, standard crappy games that fluke.

    Try DDO...

That game is a group game, and people seem very friendly in the game.

    Sadly everything is instanced.

That is how World of Warcraft works.

  • Hmm.... Final Fantasy 11 is the best example. The reason for non group based games is because usually people want to play the classes that are bad for groups (usually the rogue/theif class or ranger class). And in real group based games you don't get anywhere unless you have a group so.... Alot of people can't advance, get angry at the game, and quit. So I assume this is why most devs shy away from making a totally group based game.

Companies that want to optimize subscribers will have a big chunk of solo content.  More and more mmorpg fans have less time as they grow up and have more serious responsibilities.  I dont see that changing but I'm with you, I like to group more than even raiding.  Vanguard's content  is supposed to be about 20% solo, 20% raid and 60% group but I have not adventured enough to confirm.

Just not worth my time anymore.

The real challenge is trying to make a group based game where every class is needed equally and you somehow convince players to choose classes equally.  An impossible task, as most games have proven. Even if the classes group equall (rogue classes rarely do) players preferences always create imbalances.

The only real solution would be to set out with a set limit of players on a particular server..and a maximum number of active classes for each one.  Say you put a limit that a server could have no more than 200 warriors..after that...the choice would be grayed out.... but wait... since we all level at different speeds... you could have multiple tiers of 200... er .... wait...

OK, as you can see, that would be a bad solution, and there's really no good way to ensure players chose to be a healer.  (always a shortage in any game) There fore you have people standing around... waiting to play...lfg endlessly....and game becomes no fun. So lately, developers have been taking the easier route and making more solo characters/content..  WoW, DAOC both have them...even GW's doesnt really need groups..except on a few of the upper level missions.

    FFXI.

Once you get lv12, you never solo again.

I have a the box of FFXI and have never even played it.

Honestly can't even afford the fee right now. It's a shame.

I'm actually picking pennies up off the ground outside these days. Hard times.

Is it really worth the money?

Wait for Star Trek Online. You'll play a crewmember on a starship. You can't get any more groupier than that!!

    /agree OP.

Back in the old days, in UO, or EQ, AO, or SWG, we weren't so picky with the ones we grouped with, or played with, or chatted with.  The term "pick up group" didn't have any meaning, because every group was a pick up group.  Someone was doing something, someone dropped out, and so you just picked up someone else.

These days though, we have more reasons to put people on /ignore, than put people in the group.  We don't play with people who aren't on TS or Vent.  We don't play with the cleric, because its not the cleric with the "right build."  We don't play with the ones from other guilds.  We don't play with the unguilded.  We absolutely don't just call up a group, because then we'll "waste time," or we "won't get anything done," or "we'll all die."

So its no wonder why there are so many solo players, and so many unresponsive players.  If you don't want to type, then just ignore the one who types "hello, LFG?," and wait for someone who is willing and able to log on to the voice program of your choice.
