I have been looking into both WoW and FFXI...I have a 360 and really want to beable to play a MMO on it. I need a PC that can run current software because mine cant now...id have to wait until Christmas! So, I was looking at both of the games and heard great things about both...First off, I heard FFXI was really time consuming and very anti-social. You have to pay for EVERYTHING ingame and its very hard to get groups just to play. I also heard that it is challenging and an amazing game and has a great storyline etc...With WoW i heard that there are lil 10 year olds running around and its overcrouded, over rated, graphics are horrible, really easy and that you could complete the game in like....15 days! Positives are that it is really really really REALLY fun! and that it is really good with getting people to work together but you can also solo (which I like.....A LOT) and you can get mounts and it has a great HUD (heads up display) which FFXI has menus and a bad HUD etc...
So, in short I am asking if I should wait until christmas to get WoW or should I get FFXI...because I am a huge FFXI fan and I can play on my 360....
Thanks

"....First off, I heard FFXI was really time consuming and very anti-social."
First part is right, The Anti-social part is ridiculuos. How can somthing be heavily group oriented, and yet be anti-social, it doesn't make sense. And is not in the least bit true.
"...you have to pay for EVERYTHING ingame and its very hard to get groups just to play..."
And... IN what kind of game don't you? You want to rent a chocobo, You've gotta pay for it. You wana ride the airship, you've gotta pay for it, You want to buy a spiffy new Axe, Yup you've guessed it, You've gotta pay for it.
"With WoW i heard that there are lil 10 year olds running around and its overcrouded, over rated, graphics are horrible"
From the limited WoW I've played, Only the towns are overcrouded. They're really chaotic, People running around, riding on diffrent creatrues. The towns are huge and easy to get lost in your first.. second, tenth time there. And I know I use this wayyyyy too much, But I will always say, The graphics in WoW look like a box of crayons exploded.
"really easy and that you could complete the game in like....15 days! Positives are that it is really really really REALLY fun!"
This is just IMO, but If I can beat a game in 15 days, Then how much fun will it be in a couple months. Now it is true, you can solo 1-60 (I think last expansion raised cap to 70) In 1 month, But once you get there it starts to rival FFXI in time consumption, Dungeons where you're going to need like 20 people, to spend 4+ hours in this huge labrinth, to get to a treasure chest thats going to drop 1 or 2 items.
"....and that it is really good with getting people to work together but you can also solo (which I like.....A LOT)"
Lol <.< You serious? Again, the maturity level is of 10 year old kids, Where if you ask for help, you'll get 10 people calling you a noob for not knowning ( I'm not exaderating i'm serous.) While you can solo the entire way, When you hit max Lvl you need to party or you can't do anything, And you get people who've never parted before. And who don't know how to perforum in a party.
A lot of your information sounds like its come from WoW boards, where they've sugar coated it and made FFXI look like this satanic game that if you don't invest 10 hours a day/365 that you'll never get anywhere... But that doesn't matter.
It comes down in the very end, the last few sentances that you really like to Solo. (Deep Sigh), FFXI is heavilly party oriented. Only a few jobs Can solo effectivly. (Solo For EXP that is, Anyjob can kill monsters, just not experance mobs) After about lvl 15 Soloing takes a huge drop of (From your basic non-soloing jobs) And 20+ Its more time savery to party. Beastmaster is your best soloer but, You need to get 1 of the Basic jobs (Monk, Thief, Warrior, White mage, Black mage, Red mage) to level 30 before you can unlock Advanced jobs.
Sadly, FFXI doesn't quite get interesting untill 30+ And so many people will quit before then, So if you do decided FFXI make yourself a goal that you'll at least get to 35 (Or So) so you don't quit the game prematurly.
Awesome. Thanks! I was getting all the info from MMORPG.com and Allakhazam.com
Just to let you know
Thanks again
But WoW owns us in market share and gaming population, so if you take a vote out of all MMO gamers out there, WoW will win.

First off and above all, the graphics don't suck and they ARE better then ffxi, ffxi was developed way before WoW. Their engine is aging while wow's engine is still spankin good.
If that idiot got lost in cities he should have used the map, it will take no more then 60 seconds to get from one side of a city to another, 2 minutes at most if your not used to it.
Unless your some real hardcore player WoW takes about 2 months time to lvl up to 60 and i hear from closed beta testers that it will be roughly another month to hit 70 from 60. I have 4 60's so i know very well how long each takes. On average it took me about 11-14 days played time(ie, if u played 11 days straight) to hit 60.
The end game involves dungeons anywhere from 5man, 15man, 20man, and 40man. The expansion will focus on 5man, 10man, and 20man.
As for the 10yr olds, that guy is really exaggirating a lot. Yes there are a LOT of very young people but there are far more mature people playing the game. All you need to do is ask and look around for a guild that you would fit into best with your age group. My guild mostly consists of people who are 20+ and the majority of them are husbands and wives with children and we are casual raiders(ie, we'll raid once or twice a week and no one is required to come at that). Then there are hardcore raiding guilds if your into that or pvp guilds...who cares about the 10 yr old running around thats not in your guild, he can't do anything to make the game not fun.
Also WoW is probably the easiest mmo out there to get cash and good gear. And how many mmo's out there let you solo all the way to 60? None.
For the record, I just used the OP's "10 year old" in my origional reply Because thats what he used, But I really ment 13 year old. (Which would really be 13-16, That immature teen, "OMG hazors I Pwn you N00b! *Jumping around*" Stage)
Compairing FFXI to WoW is like compairing Chocolate & Shit, Sure they're the same color but thats about the only thing similiar.
Edit: And before I get any complaints, that was an analegy, I'm not calling either one chocolate or Shit, just trying to explain the diffrence, use "Ferrari Vs. Station Wagon" if you like.
Well ive never played WoW, but i have some buddies who play it. They said its a good game but does get boring after a while, the end-game just really is doing instances and stuff....but overall is pretty fun. As far as FF XI goes, ive read/heard that this is a great game, alot of time does need to be devoted into this game...but what great mmo doesnt? one problem aside, which i think ive read about is the grind, this game is great and looks great. Think about all the effort you put forth to get to 60-75, doesnt it just make you feel some what good that you havent given up and proved some people wrong? I mean comparing the two is really not necessary, i mean theyre two COMPLETELY different games. Its really what you like or what your into, yea opinions do help but its more of a "you" thing.
Ahhh heheheh ok
Lets see, I played FFXI for 3 years with leveling 5 jobs to 75 total.. and I played WoW after I quit ffxi for 7months..
So speaking from my experience, you have two totally different games. Granted, WoW got boring alot quicker than ffxi (thats why I quit) - But also alot of factors played into it. Anyways, FFXI is more revolved around groups. You need a group for EVERYTHING, and solo is pretty much out of the question leveling, unless you play a BLU or a BST and sometimes SMN. FFXI is much more together as far as community, its alot easier to meet people, and if you have a bad rep on the server.. guess what you prolly wont get into a linkshell and on WoW if you have a bad rep, no one really cares or will know really. So, with that said, FFXI has alot more drama. Also, farming gold is easier than getting gil - getting endgame items is ALOT easier on wow, because on wow theres dungeons and on FFXI theres HNMs that you camp for 3hrs and will prolly be taken by someone who bots. Wow and FFXI both have nice graphics, just depends on your taste - Wow is more, CARTOONY and FFXI is more REALISTIC. On FFXI you can buy armor and sell it back when you're done, and on WoW everything is soulbound (cant buy/use and resell). The PVP is WoW is alot better because its a big part of the game, and in FFXI its optional really.. people prolly wont do it much, unless your linkshell does it. It IS alot easier to level in WoW because you can solo, and dont need to worry about subjobs.. you just go lol and it takes like 15 days and in FFXI it takes major hardcore no life gamers 3weeks and hardcore gamers 1month 1/2 and casual players 3 months to get to 75. So yeah, they are totally different games, but FFXI was more fulfilling to me. When I got to 60 on WoW I got bored, just logged on to raid and PVP sometimes.. besides that BORING yet I played FFXI for 3 years, doing all sorts of things, and it was alot of fun.. both of them were fun and enjoyable - But WoW is alot easier game to master, compared to FFXI. If you can master FFXI you can master WoW with ease - That coming from my WHOLE ffxi linkshell moving to WoW and owning the whole game in no time once we all got 60.
I played WoW for about 3 months before I quit, then played another 3 before quitting again. I have never played FFXI so I can only give my opinion on WoW.
I solo'd untill 60, took me about 4 months. I quit after 3 because I got stuck and I got bored. Anyways, during those 4 months it was a blast, 2 entire contenints to explore, several areas for each level so you never get bored leveling, finding something new and cool every time you play.
Then I hit 60, and I'm like "Now what?" Went in and out of raiding guilds but they're always to serious and wanted me to do something I didn't want to do during the raids. I was lvl 60 paladin that soloed entire game with brute force, but in a raid they want me to heal? BS
PvP sucked since raiding was usually a waste of 3 hours and not getting any items. So during the PvP I'de always be out geared and not to mention made to think that certain classes were imbalanced on the Horde. *Cough* Shaman *Cough*
I reccomend buying WoW, and playing aslong as it's fun. 1 - 60 will be fun and during that time I believe you'll get your money's worth. After reading this post I'm ganna buy FFXI tonight and I hope I can play it as much or longer than WoW.
well i think that ffxi has better graphics i looked at the website WOW graphics seems a bit to cartoony for me i am going with ffxi but anyway it is just a opninen you cant really say anything unless you play the game deos anybody else agrees with me?
My First MMORPG experience was with Final Fantasy XI. I loved the game and played for nealry a year and a half. I quit. This game in my opinion is not as good as many of these people on this topic are bolstering about it. First of all, yes EVERYTHING in this game costs money. The biggest item you'll gain in this game IS gil. This is because, unlike World of Warcraft, almost all of the end game gear that is gained is from the Auction House. This gives Real Money Trade thriving in FFXI. Honestly, to do almost anything in this game, one must either be extremely lucky and get a gnack for a trade or buy gil online. I honestly have values and couldn't stoop to buying gil. In WoW, your gear has to be earned, something that FFXI is staring to do now with EX/Rare. If you want that epic axe, you have to be there when it drops, because most of the best epic gear you can get is Bind on Pickup, meaning once you get it, you can't sell it or trade it, only can be sold by a vendor or sharded for enchantment purposes.
Another thing that is a problem in the game is there are too many classes! I know this sounds strange, but hear me out. You don't need some of the classes in the game at all. Biggest example would be Paladins in the game. They should obviously be good tanks and be able to hold aggro, yet people rather have a Ninja tank over a Warrior or a Paladin? whats up with that? Also since this game is party oriented, and so many array of classes, people trying to lvl one class that they enjoy are screwed when it comes to party's. Damage dealer classes have it the worse. My buddy's Dark Knight was not able to get into any end game guild without having another class leveled as well. Dark Knights are another example of a class that is really unnecessary compared to other classes. In WoW, even though there are only 9 class to choose from, any class you pick will be needed. There is not one class n the game that is not needed. Also every class has 3 trees with a variety of skills and stats you can pick-up by leveling and putting skill points into, giving you customization that FFXI doesn't have. They have a Post-75 leveling system that resembles the tree system; however, it doesn't even come close.
Professions in the game are annoying as !@#$. Leveling your craft in the game takes hard determination and countless of crystals breaking. When you can finally make cool stuff, you have to work your arse off getting the mats and then try to make the item it has a chance of breaking, and your mats being lost. WoW's professions are perfect! You lvl your profession very easily usually getting to max lvl by lvl 40s and it doesn't mean anything. Your synthesis are a 100%, yet the best things you can make can only be learned by patterns, book, schematic you need to make the uber item is rare to find. There are actually rare crafters in the game that are well known for what crafts they can make. Also you can start making money with your profession right then, and with a limit of only 2 professions per player, you can't monopolize the job market.
Sure, the storyline in the game is fun, but so is World of Warcraft's. The entire game of WoW from small things as the environment you move and walk around in, to the quests you complete, to even the boss encounters from dungeons, all come from the previous games, books, and paper&dice rpg. There isn't anything in the game that is just there, everything has a backstory. FFXI storyline is just for FFXI. It is good, and the story is rather interesting, but it doesn't have the vastness that WoW has.
The leveling process can seriously get boring, since everything is party oriented, if you want to lvl your class and can't get a party for 2-3 days, just keep sitting at Jeuno and wait for someone to call your class in a looking for group. Leveling ssytem in WoW is very big. You can do quests to lvl, grind on mobs, or just go straight to a dungeon. There isn't anytime where your just sitting and "waiting". I told my friend who played FFXI with me, btw he started playing WoW now, why would I want to spend 12.95 a month when half the time i was looking for party's anyway.
Harder is sometimes considered more challenging and exciting, but honestly it can also be meaningless and stupid. The tedious things in FFXI are just sometimes plain annoying and not necessary.
When I joined WoW, the first thing I saw was that the game had 0 downtime. In FFXI i would sit for days waiting for a group/ Trying to find my own and in WoW I could just go set out on quests and try to catch a party whenever I could. The game isn't about the leveling aspect of getting to 60, but its about after reaching lvl 60. There is limitless amounts of things you can do at 60. You can start raiding (Which I don't understand why people can't spend 3hrs doing when FFXI grind sessions were like 6-7hrs+). You can start PvPing, where true skill comes in. You can start working on attunements and key quests. You can start saving up money for your epic mount. You can work on enchantment materials for your gear. There is soo much to do that just leveling is just half the battle.
In FFXI, you can level. In FFXI, you can try completing Missions from Expansion packs like RoZ, CoP, or ToAU. Your biggest thing you'll be worrying about is trying to keep your head above water in not beoming broke. Of course "end game raiding" for FFXI would be Sky and Sea, where you kill the same gods, jailor, etc. over and over again, and obtain the mats to summon them from quests. Its not fun. In WoW end game raiding means learning the encounter of the boss. Learning what to do and not to do. After completing your objective, its about progressing. There is 2 20-man raids: ZG, AQ20, 4 40-man end-game dungeons: Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, AQ40, and Naxxramas. (Naxxramas was just fully cleared 2 months ago).
All in All, im not dissing, well I did, FFXI. It was a great game, with realistic graphics and great people, but in no way is WoW a grind session MMORPG. It is one of the best MMOs of its time, and if you don't believe me ask the 8 million people that play it. Half my guild in WoW left FFXI because of the same exact reasons im stating here.
My .02 cent. Peace
SOOOO to all who do this all you have to do instead of posting 1millions times here is ask if you want a challenge as in Learning how to play, more grinding and what not go with anything other then WoW. If you want one that is so easy you could play it while sleeping do WoW
"NOTHING about WoW is even moderately difficult even the travel is easy as heck. "
Yea man the traveling is easy. I mean who wants to spend 20mins going to zone to zone on a chocobo backtracking because you forgot your warp stick, not a blackmage, whitemage, or didn't want to wait for the airship, geez. I guess being able to get to point A to point B with travel easy, means that the game is more harder. BS! it's more like unnecessary.
hello, FFXI hands down much better challenge , MUCH more content and depth. Ive played the game for 3.5 years and am still currently playing. i played WoW for 5 months, got completly bored after i hit lvl 60. The controls can be a lil funky on keyboard (for me at least) but i use the xbox 360 controller on my pc , works great. FFXI ftw!
You won't hear many here say this, but WoW is a good game. I like to group....but its so much easier to play solo...I played WoW to lvl 48 and since it didn't require me to be in a party, I never looked for them. It just always felt like a single player game to me, in which case I'd rather be playing my console games. (I do realize that the game gets harder after 60, but i don't wanna wait that long before being challenged.)
I also agree that there are many more quests in WoW....unfortunately most of them are meaningless. FFXI doesn't have many quests, but when you do one you get the feeling that you are doing something important.
To answer your question it comes down to why you play these games. If you are just looking to be social...then any game will work for you. If you are looking for fun, simplicity, and solo play go with WoW.
However if you are like me and you play because you enjoy a sense of accomplishment. You know, the one you feel when you take down a notorious monster, successfully craft a rare item, or complete one of the story quests.
For me, FFXI is better, finding a group can be a pain at times, but i can deal with that. I don't always want a group...sometimes I just like to go out and farm for my craft....thats enough solo play for me.
Whatever you decide...Enjoy
In FFXI you get the challenge almost from the go, this means by the time you reach the maximum level (and even long before that) you have endured a lot of hardship and know the value of cooperation and know how all jobs work together.
Also WoW end-game is not so "Hard" because you are not sacrificing anything or risk losing anything, wow I died I get some repair cost, I can farm 100x that repair cost in less time it took dying, the risk vs reward is laughable at the very best, this ALSO contributes to the fact that even people who progressed far in the game takes it very lightly and in the end it does not give a great feeling of accomplishment. I had a fully equipped Tier 2 rogue with Naxxramas grade weapons but it still didn't feel I had accomplished a lot just that I had spent a lot time getting it.
I did play FFXI long before WoW and I have come back after my journeys in WoW, WoW is not a BAD game but don't come here saying it's challenging because it's not, it was designed to be easily accessable and provide for a "quick-fix" experience. I have Burning Crusade preordered since like a year ago but I'm sceptic as to how much time I will spend with it, Dynamis, Limbus, Salvage and Assault just seem so much more appealing right now.
See my main issue with FFXI when I played it was that it was in no way to me a Final Fantasy game. Maybe cause I only played to lvl 25, but it just did not resonate FF to me. Meanwhile, WoW does have the backstory and feel of Blizzard's previous games.
Also the lvling speed of FF was insane. I'm sorry but maybe cause I'm not an old school gamer, I don't feel like having to group for EVERYTHING (and I mean that literally) I want to accomplish that will bring me advancement. COH, WoW, and Guild Wars remind of new age MMOs where I you can't find a group for two hours you don't feel like you need to log and come back. FFXI just felt like the words YOU MUST GROUP was flashing every time I logged in. Getting on a group was eventually easier as you played and learned the ropes, but feeling like you have to group was not just fun.
Coming from that game to COH, WoW, the Guild Wars was like night and day. Suddenly I felt like I could actually play the game and advance if I didn't feel like grouping. However, like others have said the later lvls really show the depth of FFXI.
Also, the graphics didn't impress me on FFXI. Then again there are few that do. That's just me. The best graphics to me is Coh/Cov. (In terms of the ones I play/played).
So in conclusion as someone else mentioned, if you like to solo more and group less choose just about anything other than FFXI. However if you don't mind spending time looking for groups and taking some time to lvl (an understatement) if you are solo, and look forward to a game that gets VERY EPIC as you lvl then FFXI is for you.
Just keep in mind that if you don't have a lot of time to play per week anything other than FFXI will be better for ya.
I've been playing FFXI for a few hours now and I have come to the conclusion that FFXI is the worst ORPG out there. Camera viewing is horrible, trying to move is ridiculous, don't even get me started on the attacking, this game may be the least user friendly game ever made. There is no comparison to WoW and FFXI based on the fact that FFXI is horrible. How some of you could play this game for years just blows my mind. And someone said that this game had good graphics, they're flat out wrong. The guy who said WoW looks like box of crayons exploded is retarded, atleast WoW HAS color. I havn't seen a color other than white and gray and a very light shade of yellow the entire time so far. -
