Way back when, NC Soft mentioned that they had planned 12 Chronicles.

At the moment we are at Chronicle 5 and now they have decided that going forth the new expansions will be called "Interlude". I'm sure given this change in names they will also have another change in time (given the definition of Interlude).

It's hard to say how many they really will have. Depends on how well the game does, what effect other MMOS have on it (including Lineage 3 which they are working on).

However, I imagine there are many more updates to this game in the future.

There are 12 chronicles planned, and as Sovrath said we are in 5 heading towards 6. They seem to come every 6 months. Chances are they will finish all 12 chronicles. L2 is the most popular game in Korea at the moment (it has it's own tv channel in Korea) and NCSoft has little chance of going bankrupt.

You can bet on NCSoft to keep updating the game. It's got huge global success. Lineage 1 is still being updated so even after Lineage 3 comes around you'll still be able to play Lineage 2.

In Lineage 1's case, they finished their set of chronicles (don't remember how many, 12 or 14..) just as L2 was coming out. But the game was still so popular that the began a whole new sequence of chronicles, many of which implemented the highly desired feature of L2 into L1.

Also, L2 is not the most popular game in Korea. There are many non-MMO games like Kart Racer which are amazing popular, but L1 still has more players than L2.

However, L2 has a bigger international playerbase than L1, and I think NCsoft cares more about that since the Korean market is overcrowded. They'd like to tap into NA and Europe (and considering the shitty production values on most NA/Euro MMOs, they have a good shot at it if they can overcome the stigma of "Lineage is a grindfest, LAWLZ")

Nice post, thanks for taking the time to actually do some research

The "Lineage grindfest" thing is about to be a moot point with the release of Vanguard.

I was in beta since last summer. It is just as much a grind as L2. Its gonna make people who have a thing for tweeking their avartars face all warm and fuzzy and those who want to craft to feel a sense a belonging, but other then that its the same old same old kill task grind shit we have seen 1000 times in the western market by western companies. (just like Asian) Its gonna beat its initial customer base up. The only difference is SOE will probably revamp the thing about two dozen times. I will bet they change the XP within the first 4 months.

Its a good looking game but it has no higher purpose other then to reach another number. Good looks doesn't equal good gameplay as we have seen dozens of times.

As far as the amount of chronicles, it pretty certain L2 is going to be putting out updates for a long time to come. Longer then most of us will playing.  Warcry, you should just try it....

I'd like to agree with you on the case of Vanguard, because the truth is that Lineage's grind really isn't so terrible. You don't even need to get close to the level cap to engage in the elements of politics, PvP or sieging. Yet, for some reason the word Lineage is synonymous with "grind" in many western players vocabularies.

In fact, they take the "Lineage-clone" grindfests that come out of Korea as more backing for their assumptions, without actually playing Lineage itself. NCsoft has a very very serious problem that can only be addressed by creating a widely popular open beta for the next in the Lineage series, and making sure that beta feels very much grind-free.

    Agreed.

The problem with the the "lineage clone" sterotype is that ts true to a point. Many of the the "lesser" games that come out of Asia model Lineage. And why wouldn't they? It was wildly successful there.

On the other hand what do we pump out here in the west? EQ clones....

Devs around the world seem to be getting the point that people are not impressed with grind but it takes time. Vanguard has also set back the western market with its flat out, in your face, pointless grind. Aside from Vanguard many of these games currently live where concieved and developed during a time when MMO were really just starting out, grind was good back when this all started. They didn't know what else to do with them and the players where so taken with the idea that they could "live" a virual life in an MMO no one noticed so much. L2 is a very old game when you look at MMOs as a whole. It released in Asia a year before the west. Thats 4 years ago. The original ideas came around 2 to 3 years befor that. Where does that put it? Right smack at the peak of the "grind is good" era. (2000-2002)

Games like Aion, Conan and LotR look promising when it comes backing away from the traditional grind ideas, moreso then anything else. (Im not up on every MMO so there may be more)  I don't think we can ever really get away from grind but there has to be a way to intragrate it into gameplay so that at least its enjoyable or more engaging.

True you do not need to grind to get to things that which make Lineage 2 great except for castle seiging.. You cannot get anywhere without being a high level. I hope those fortresses coming in interlude change some of that.

I don't know what server you play on, but on the smaller servers (i.e. not bartz, franz, or teon), a lot of mid-level clans hold castles. On Gustin for instance there are only a hand full of really high level players with great gear, and they can only hold/defend 4 or 5 of the castles. Usually Gludio, Innadril, and sometimes Oren and Schuttgart are left open for clans with players in the sub-75 level range. On top of that, the fortresses will add a lot of controllable territory for smaller clans on the large servers as well.

That is of course if fortresses aren't as hard as Devestated Castle, which was harder to take than Aden Castle from the NPCs. I think they'll be pretty easy though, I heard that CH in Forest of the Dead is easy, and it'll probably be more similar to that.
