My last hope is EVE

After cycling through a series of MMORPG, most of which failed miserably, my last hope has become EVE.

Could seasoned EVE players help a newb trhough the learning phase and make my time on EVE enjoyable.

Cheers.

  • Hey man. I just made a thread "so you want to try EVE, eh?" Read it. I have tried lots of games lately too. EVE is hard to get started, but once you get going it's fun.

What do you consider as fun? Fun can be very different from person to person.

My guildmate considers mining hrs after hrs is fun, and I think mission running is fun. What do you think is fun?

Well there are complex Guilds in EvE [we call them corperations tho] And the Corp to Corp intereactions can get very complex event to the level of forming trading contracts. This can also form Alliances whicha re officially recognised and when 2 alliances meet in way just like in Corp V corp wars it can ge tintence [exept instead of imagining say 10 v 10 fights imagine 250 v 250].

EVE is very much unlike other MMO's, it requires you to be active and to find things on your own. It doesn't prevent you from making (bad) mistakes at all. You WILL make mistakes, tons of them... day in day out., learn from them so you don't make the same mistake twice :)

If you need help post on the EVE-online newbie forums, you'll get some proper answers there. If you still have problems send an evemail to Caleb Paine, that's me. I can help you out.

Most important bit of advice I can give you is in terms of attribute setup, since that is one of the few decisions you can never correct without starting over.

Attributes in order of their importance:

    Memory

    Intelligence

    Perception

    Willpower

    Charisma

Leave charisma alone, it is easily the most useless of the bunch, memory and intell are by far the most important overall, with perception and willpower needing a good bit of love as well for a combat pilot.

Setting these attribues up well can shave days and eventually weeks off of the time it takes to learn new skills.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Load the game, knock around in the newbie channel for a couple of weeks, it's fun. You will make friends and learn the game at your own pace.

Far better to be among peers than always be nagging Darth Vader the Uber lord when he is trying to organise something you can't join in with anyway.

I highly recommend EvE University.  It's one of the most respected, friendliest, mature, and helpful ventures in the game.  The corporation's entire purpose is to ease new players into the game in a friendly and guiding atmosphere.  I could go on at length extolling the University's virtues, or I could just tell you that I am in it and loving it.  My character's name is Shay Astar.

Whether or not you join up, keep in mind that without a doubt it's pretty key to get into a corporation that suits you early on in EvE.  You just won't have fun in the beginning otherwise.

    Good luck and have fun.

This is one game where maturity reigns supreme. I've never seen it before in a MMO to this scale, and it blew my mind.

You'll need patience to play EVE,that's the one thing I've learnt from playing the trials. I am considering, upon acquisition of a debit card, subscribing to EVE myself. But there's plenty of help about, that's for sure. Get used to the auto-pilot and long transports though. This is a complex game that will take ages to master.

i played eve with the free 10 day trail from here

indeed you need patience when you start.

in my first 2 days i played it i lost about 6 ships, why? because i like to go on. but on some quests you need more peeps which are hard to find.

i gave up after 3 days, this is not my game. like some upgrades need a day or 2. sorry but can't wait that long

    my opinion

    *chuckles*

I wouldn't say it reigns supreme.  Most folks in EVE are fairly mature but there are a few romper room rejects even in EVE.  :)

Patience?  I dunno not so much.  Things don't really take all that long in EVE when you start thinking about the grand scheme of things.  How long does it take to get to max level in and MMO and then get the absolute best gear in the game?  It's comparable in time, yes even in WoW, to how long it takes to get to the point where you can fly some of the best ships in the game and fly them well in EVE.  It's not really any slower than any other MMO in that regard.

As to travel?  If you are travelling with the autopilot you deserve to be bored :)  Use warp to 0.  It will speed your travel up by 1000%.   Silly people.... using autopilot.... sheesh.  I only use autopilot if I have to go extended AFK and need to get somewhere quickly.  and if I do it I do it in a ship with a rack of nanos in the lows so it aligns and moves faster than a shuttle.  I never make long trips in a slow aligning ship on *autopilot*  Egads... talk about boring.

EVE isn't so much about patience as it is about setting goals and working towards them.  If you don't have a goal in mind (and stick to it) you can easily wind up training for days and days and making no progress because the skills you trained may sound neat at the moment but don't really help in the long run.  It's a typical problem and very common among new players.

    Good recommendation:
    • Join EVE University
    • Use EVEMon to figure out what ships/equipment you want to use and add the skills needed for that  to your long term plan
    • Read the Official forums Ships & Modules thread for tips on what ships are good for what roles and how best to fit them.
    • Use Quickfit to play with ship fittings before you buy ships/equipment to save yourself money.  Used in conjuntion with EVEMon this can save you days, weeks, even months of wasted training time in the long run.
    • If you plan to PvP and aren't in a good PVP corp take courses from Agony Unleashed.  EVE University will give you the basics... Agony Unleashed will teach you how to PVP.
