Downloading with launchpad - are they kidding me?

I started to download the game with the launchpad last night. When I went to bed it said about 1 hour left. Now I woke up and it is on 61 hours left - wtf is going on?

And if that was not enough, the damn launchpad now uses no less than 670000KB of memory. Jesus...

Once again, are they kidding me? How were your downloads?

Just great, the damn launchpad crashed. Lucky I was here to restart it.

Gonna be interesting to see what has happened when I return from work. Piece of sh_t..

Took me 5 hours to download from fileplanet. After the game was installed, the launch pad patched the game up in 5 to 10 mins.

That sounds better - any other mirrors since I am from Europe I am not allowed to download it from FP :-(
  • gonkogonko Member Posts: 22

What I read so far, is that you can only get it from fileplanet or by purchasing the pre-order box. The pre-order box is a month behind in the image so the patcher has to download a lot more then the image from fileplanet.

Ohh if you are from Europe, you can get it from:www.eurogamer.net

    From Beta 5 FAQ:   http://www.vanguardsoh.com/status.php

When can Europeans get in to beta?

The European beta will open on January 8th. European customers who have pre-ordered Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and received their key can also join beta on January 5th.

How Will Europeans get in to beta?

www.eurogamer.net will be giving out Vanguard beta keys to European testers.

Well, the beta keys are from Eurogamer, but the freaking files are not. Trying out the torrent now, maybe I have better luck.

I installed the client via the preorder DVD back a couple weeks ago.  Decided tonight to actually try out the beta key.   It started patching nearly 5 hours ago and so far it tells me that it has 5 1/2 hours left in the patch process.   Come on 11 hours to patch via a 6Mbps connection?   That is insane.   I am hitting the sack and if that $#@$% is still downloading when I get up, I am killing the download, and uninstalling that thing.

it took me three full days to download the client...and even when u do, the game doesnt run that well. its still in beta folks, this is what you are going to get. just leave it on and do something else for a while, and if you arent willing to wait for a game thats not going to run that well yet anyways, just wait for the offficial release and save the beta environment from spams about how bad it runs on your computer.:)

The euro d/l will take almost three days...it's an enormous d/l. Beta is undergoing a lot of stress testing so it might not be to your fancy at the moment as it will not give you a good indication of the game, though if you persist by sticking with with it, you will get an idea of it's potential which is rather positive. Good luck with the d/l for those daring enough.

Anyone that got it in from eurogamers.net is at the mercy of getting from the SOE downloader or some random torrent. The problem with the dowloader from soe like i have said before is that each file is downloaded one at a time instead of one large chunk. This basicalley turned a 8 hour download for me into a 30+ hour one.
  • neuronomadneuronomad Member Posts: 1,276
I am on like hour 16 or so.  If that puppy hasn't finished in another 8 hours, I am stopping it, deleting the game, and caulking up the $10 spent on the preorder as actually $40 saved by not buying the game.   It shouldn't take over 24 hours of downloading to be able to play a game.

I hate to say it but you might as well chalk it up and delete it then. I bought the pre-order and it took me 2days to download. This was on my brand new build.     duel core  with cable connection.....

Best of luck to you. It is fun once you are finally able to get in and give it a spin....

So far the folder is 10gb for me and it feels like I've been downloading forever. Think I've done my fair share of beta testing of their downloader now so I'll end my test...

I downloaded the client at about 7gb initially.  From there the launcher had to download about 10gb.  All in all it took a few days.  At one point when I came home it said 626 hours left ......"26 days huh?"..... and had to restart the launcher.

Having to wait a few days for beta play sucks, trust me I know.  A good thing about having the launcher download is that you can start where you stopped if the download is interrupted.

Edit: I assume that people preordering Vanguard plan on playing it for a while.  Three days of downloading (my case with interuptions) shouldn't cancel out future entertainment.  It's worth it trust me

Just not worth my time anymore.

Been a issue with Vanguard updating from a fresh install for a while now.

All in all the launchpad installer/updater is one of the best on the market presently. Unfortunately the update servers are seriously underpowered for the bandwidth usage being asked for. Even with a small user base each login is using 3x as much time on the bandwidth, this causes a lot of issues.

Note: there are quite a few threads complaining about launch pad crashing and the OP being flamed for it, but it is a real bug for non-fileplanet installs. It will be a serious issue for people reinstalling from a download also in my prediction (trials and similart in the future, this is a SOE marketed game after all).

Ignore whatever time the patcher is telling you. That is a joke.

The install folder will be a shade under or over 17 Gig when its done (yeah its that big).

I used the patcher to download the entire thing and it took me about 36 hours to complete on a very high speed cable connection.

I've never heard of anyone getting the fileplanet file and then patching in 5 minutes. I wouldn't expect that.

If you can't wait that length of time to download the game, then I'd suggest just stopping your download now. There is no point in waiting another 8 hours.

Ditto on the huge initial download via launchpad.

Mine took about 49 hours, but not continuous. There were probably 3 downloads of new material started in that period, because updates happen frequently. If an update occurs during the download, the download is canceled and must be manually restarted. Most of the bulk is in the world map (chunk files). I got through the other stuff easily in a few hours on the first day, and had to keep updating because the chunks never finished. I wonder if these guys thought of building compression & decompression into their patching process? I wonder if it's already being done?

My network traffic was about 1 Mbps when running when I was sitting and waiting impatiently, as checked via Task Manager. I have a cable modem connection that can do at least 3 Mbps, so clearly the limitation is at the download server.

They probably have it throttled to give as many people as possible a chance to get it downloaded.  From what you've observed they might have it throttled at around 1 Mbps per connection.  That way a few people with really fast connections don't "hog" all the bandwidth.  They spread it around and try to give as many people as possible a "decent" download speed.

Granted, when it's the size that it is - it does seem to take forever; but when then - there weren't a lot of other options.

Calm down man. The launchpad saves your progress, and the time estimator is way off a lot of times. Just keep at it. If you check your vanguard folder, it will be around 17gigs when it's done.

I can't believe what I've been reading since I began to see the times people are taking to download this game.  All these hrs just to play this game is totally ridiculous.  I've heard the game is huge but c'mon now,  it shouldn't be like this.  I don't know, but maybe they could of done it a different way so people wouldn't have to take days to do this.

I'm currently waiting for launch which I heard was at the end of this month, January 30 then I'll deal with this.  As much as I want to play this game,  spending mad hours downloading it is not something I'm really looking forward to doing.  I guess this is one reason why I haven't gotten upset I couldn't log in with the pre-order cd.
