Class based EQ clone monopoly

jezvinjezvin Member UncommonPosts: 804

Is anyone else sick of all the games coming out and that are out with classes, the only two games that i can think of that are not class based are Ryzom and Eve which are both over 2 years old.

The two big reasons why I think class based games are horrible are pvp and grouping.  Two things which I feel are key to a good mmorpg. With classes pvp is almost always based on which class you are playing or fighting rather than anything else. And with grouping you always need certain classes to group with aka healers.

Is anyone else thinking something is wrong with the fact that almost every game out and coming out uses classes instead of skills.

I agree, Skill based system > Class based system.

Would be nice to see MMO's break away from this gandalf stereotype.

I find Skill + Title* based systems a must.

    * As in, you kill 1500 Rats, you gain the title "Rats slayer" giving you +1 Dexterity or w/e. (Replace "kill 1500 Rats" with basically anything.)

I made a simialr post to this one the other day but got no feedback from people, however I totally agree that class based mmorpg are pathetic Imho and I would love to see a new mmorpg that revolves around skills

I hate the idea of classed based and stat based gameplay. Too bad most gamers want a simpler form of gameplay that requires little thought. Look at WoW, you don't even have to decide what stats to raise anymore.

The idea of a "level" is such an archaic idea, you'd think someone would come up with an alternative. I guess though, people need a sense they have achieved something and a way to compare themselves to other players, so a level helps in that regard.

These doesnt have class system either... The reason they do not have that is that there is no actual combat, other than Auto-Attack and a few spells... Spells which are the same for everyone who tries these classes.

Im for skill system, but the variation in spells are limited in the games ive seen with this sort of system. You would need some innovation within this area, with a mix of skills that actually defines a character as a class in the end.

Let us say i make a character. I choose to level up skill X and skill Y... If i do this i will in the end become class Z. If i choose to level up X, U, R and S, i will in the end become class T.(Class may not be defined by the developers, but in players term, one might be a battlemage because he or she choose these and them skills)

So you would still be a class, but you will not be "locked" into the same class all the time, as you can choose to level up another skill, tho on the cost of another skill.

I would also *really like* to see a skill-system game. The old Asheron's Call was something of a hybrid, and was a really great game in its heyday. Too bad it's been taken over by power-levelers and buffbots now.

Every time I look at a new game and see classes, I roll my eyes.

A skill system like AC's was probably the best and most involving character advancement system to date.   I think the main reason a lot of devs go with class based systems is because its easier from a design standpoint to balance 8-10 classes each with defined rolls rather then balance and tweak 100 skills.   As much as I love AC, that game did have some skills that were absolutely silly in regards to their utility, but none the less it was nice to decide how I wanted my guy to grow.  That leads to player responsibility and accountability to make sure players dont gimp themselves, which is probably another reason we see less skill based.  I'm sure half the people who played AC1 had to reroll at some point or another because they didnt like how things were panning out, but I guess with the invent of limited respecs that isnt really an issue anymore.  Plus you have to realize Dungeons and Dragons was the Godfather of most RPG's and their class based system is something that is easy for a lot of people to grasp mentally because it defines players rolls very sharply.

What you described here is one type of skill based games. Not all skill based games take away your skills if you want to lvl up a different set, also you are given the ability to create your own class when you lvl up so its never set in stone.

Variance in spells and skill can be an issue sometimes but look at a lot of class based games, may times different spells are nothing different than a different name.

Besides like I said at the start, class based games are all that are out atm and that are being made, so all the innovations and new spells and skills created are all being made in class based games, which puts skill based games far behind and lacking in a lot of innovation.

I definately like skill-based better. But best is skill-based which is not based on putting skillpoints wherever you like but skillpoints automatically been given based on what you do. So if I fight using a mace all the time my maceskill goes up. When I heal a lot, I get better in healing. And not using a sword all the time and then put your points in bowskill.

Im surprised no one has mentioned ''Asheron's Call'' it was skill based and also had argualby the best PvP of any game (I've played).

Asheron Call 2 failded, I think because it shifted to the class based system.

heres a Idea why not have the skills you chose (at least those that you have the most Exp or such)  determin what your class is.

Ex. you use a bow, have tracking, steath, and scavange skill you = ranger

And why not go further say you brach off and pick up the ability to train animals and get that skill higher then all the others now you = beast master.

Or perhaps you decide against animal friends and pick up some nature based magic and advance that you would then = druid.

basicly the skills you specualize assigne you a class.

I think classes are important, but I like to be able to customize skills to make the character different.
  • XApotheosisXXApotheosisX Member Posts: 277
heck i would even settle for a "class" system like the one used in SWG pre-nge. at least there was SOME customization.

It's easier to separate money from players who prefer class-based systems than from those who prefer skill-based systems.

Think about this for a little while and you will know all about my preference, and my opinion on why class-based systems predominate.

i really don't give a flying feck what they are as long as it takes more then half a neuron to play.  If you are given everything and can't lose a single thing then stick it where the sun doesn't shine.
