The godzilla2000 of mmorpg's.

This is what i call an MMORPG that is overhyped and underproduced. The last game to get this "dubious award"was SWG for me.

What are your "Godzilla2000's" currently?

There might be a few coming up ,COH for one and L2 for another.

    I liked Godzilla 2000.

Apperantly you haven't talk to any beta testers of CoH. I have heard nothing but great things from it. SWG you heard mixed reviews and some ppl saying it was just totally stupid (while it was in beta). I am looking forward to CoH.

Lineage II hasn't really had much hype because Lineage I sucked and I couldn't care less if it made it or not, it's still another stupid Korean Midivil Hack'n'Slash.

I do think WoW will turn out to be a total load of crap though. It's got tons and tons of hype and really hasn't shown anything to support it. All the hype is coming from a company that has only made Warcraft and Starcraft, wich are the exact same game w/ different graphix and different settings. I think alot of ppl are going to be disapointed when WoW comes out. I for one will not be there when everyone's going out and wasting their $50-100 on it, because I know it's not going to be as good as it's hype and over crowded to boot.

I just found out that Blizzard made the Diablo Series. OMFG! WoW will suck. I hate hack'n'slash games as well do most MMORPGers. D2 was good while it was out, but that was back in time when MMORPGs weren't all that common.
If you want to compare Starcraft and Warcraft they are almost the exact same game! WOW! WoW WILL BE CRAP! I'm 100% Certain now.

While I disagree on your assessment of WoW's potential, I do agree that the hype for WoW has been huge and expectations should be reined in a bit.  Yes, Blizzard created the Diablo series (a fantastic game, btw), but you are mistaken in assuming that WoW will use Diablo's "hack n' slash" style.  If you visit the WoW website, you'll see that the developers are taking an entirely different tack.

Having said all that, you may still choose to think WoW is garbage, but I would suggest waiting until you've played the finished product before passing judgement.  If there's one thing Blizzard is known for, it's sacrificing a lot for quality's sake.  I wouldn't underestimate them, if I were you.

LOL, what are you new ? Why don't you try checking out the game features or the beta community board before you make idiotic blanket statements like that. Oh wait, you liked Godzilla 2000, so I guess that was a disclaimer on your judgement. . .

Looking at some key people who left Blizzard and started their own companies while WoW was being made might be an indicator of the problems that Blizzard is having. So, at the moment, I'm going to assume it's all hype.

If there is one game on the market this year that will bomb, my money would be on World of Warcraft.

I just get that "I'm going to crash miserably," vibe from it.

    whoamg.

i completely agree about WoW...the hype is too much...so far from what i seen/heard WoW is all box, fluff with no substance...sure gfx are nice, but then its 2004, every upcoming game has nice gfx. also i myself i prefer an original world instead of a licenced world...AO and EQ are still FAR FAR ahead anygame that uses an already established licence (AO is much better then SWG, EQ [i never actually played] has gotta be better then FFXI)

Why is it that gamers feel the need to spout their baseless arguments all over these threads.  I have not played WoW, CoH, Lineage II, EQ II, or Guild Wars...neither have most of you people out their reading this.  While I understand that it may be tempting to predict the future of the MMORPG market, it is still a baseless argument to say "I get a vibe that Wow will crash."  I think that it might be wise to first PLAY these games, before making predetermined judgements...Xaldor

Xaldor, playing a game is usually the best way to judge a game, but you have to understand some people's skepticism on WoW. What's happening with Vevendi and Blizzard is very reminiscence of what happened with EA and OSI. Read this article and tell me what you think.

I think Blizzard has had a very good reputation up to this point, but because of what is happening with Blizzard, I can't go by that reputation anymore because they aren't the same company they once were.

Why is it that every post on these boards are the same? All people can do is say this game sucks and this game sucks, blah blah blah. I would have to agree with the person about the blanket idiotic statements, this board is full of blanket idiots. All I ever see is a statement of how a game sucks without one single shred of any evidence or even an opinion statement as to why. If you expect anyone to take you seriously or not lable you as an idiot on the spot, you are going to have to start listing some reasons.

First of all, no one can judge a game based on previous games made by the same company. Even if you could, the Diablo and Warcraft series where some of the biggest games ever. So based on this theory WOW will be one of the biggest games ever. Of courese we won't really know until the game is finally released but from what you can clearly see on their website, I don't see any signs of a bad game as of yet. I personally am still holding out hope that Ultima X online is still going to turn out to be the game for me. If anything is going to bomb, I think its going to be eq2, they have totally changed everything in the game and lots of people are not going to be happy when they get into it and realize its not the same eq they are used to.

    Alient:

I read the article, and there does seem to be a large number of people leaving blizzard.  This may indeed effect the quality of WoW, however I am still not going to form an opinion on the game until I play it.  I'm sure that you understand why.  Also I want to make it clear that I never called you or any other posters here an "idiot".  I just wanted to make the point that it is virtually impossible to form an opinion on a game before playing it.  It is reasonable, however, to assume that a game may not be up to par based on the fact that a large number of talented people have left from a game developer....so I guess I can see your point...Xaldorimage

LOL, might have went overboard on this statement but on the other hand, look at a good majority of the posts on this board. Baseless flames and putdowns around every corner, kinda makes you wonder.

obviously you haven't talked to me about it.  Not that I will mention anything but I am one of the other half of beta testers that you haven't talked to that don't like it.

Xaldor: I'm just a skeptical person, but of course I never said that WoW sucked or is going to suck because I haven't played it either. You still have people on the other side that think it's going to be the next big thing for MMORPGs. These people haven't played it and are making just as much as a blanket statement as the people who says it's going to suck. Those people who think it's going to be big is going on the premise that the game is coming from a company who is known to make great quality games. My only point is that it's not that same company anymore.

I know you never called one an idiot. You present your arguments very well and there's nothing wrong with asking people to present their's if they are going to make a claim that WoW is going to suck, which I know most in this thread did not. Not everyone is going to post a good argument on their opinions though; they are just going to state them.

Hammerhead: Since the thread was about "Godzilla2000" of MMORPGs, I was expecting a lot of trash-talking and predictions about upcoming games. People are going be fanbois of whatever game they want and are going to put down other games that might not appeal to them. I still didn't see anyone that appeared to be flaming someone else (Gnarled might have been close) until your thread.

My flame was earned (my flames are all earned) in this case based on evidence contrary to this assertion:

These people haven't played it and are making just as much as a blanket statement as the people who says it's going to suck. Those people who think it's going to be big is going on the premise that the game is coming from a company who is known to make great quality games.

I've said this before, I dont care who is making WoW. I havent played a single game made by Blizzard. I have, however, researched this game and sucked up every detail I can get my hands on.

I really can't say based on hype. I am eager and sceptical of WoW. I really think at worst it'll be a really good EQ clone. CoH shows some promise, but I think that's simply due to the concept of being a super-hero more than anything else. L2 is a great game, imo. I am not high enough to take part in the castle sieges and such, but so far it's interesting. The PvP aspect is what really makes the game, and all you have to do really is find the right server...

Ryzom looks good, looks really good. But it hasn't received much hype. Which of course may lead it to be a great game. I don't know about alot of you, but personally the one thing that detracts from the enjoyment of a game to me are the l33t d00ds; which I don't think will be around on Ryzom.

As what's been posted before, it's almost impossible to gauge how well a game is going to be based on the hype factor, graphics, web pages, etc. Unfortunately you just have to get hit by paying for the game.

Just gotta pay and find out I guess. Or wait til a friend plays it a while. :)

Well, IN MY OWN OPINION, I think if there is going to be a bust MMORPG like SWG, I would have to say WoW. That is only based on my opinion, I really have no information to back up my statement, just some vibe going out of my back. There, so no one get's all fiesty with me :P.

The only thing I can say is that due to the many recent shakeups with Blizzard and of course shakeups and Vivendi, one could imagine that the team has SIGNIFICANTLY changed since they first started WoW in what, 1998? :P. No seriously, I think they did start around then. But all that put away, I still am skeptical about it, but again, I haven't really read up a lot on the game, so this is just one of those vibes, don't have anything to back it up with.

On the opposite side, the game I think that is going to surprise everyone would definitely have to be Guild Wars. I mean let's face it, apart from a good number of people at this site and some others, not many people know the game. But that doesn't stop me from raving about how great this game is, with all the things they plan to include, so far Guild Wars looks to be the sleeper hit of 2004, but this is just my opinion.
