Upgrade? Intel or AMD?

As it looks like an upgrade is needed to get the best out of this game what does everyone think is the way to go? IF I manage to upgrade it will be one of 2 options only;

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with nVIDIA GeForce 7600GT 256MB

OR

Intel Core2 Duo E6300 Dual Core with nVIDIA GeForce 7600GS 256MB

Both systems come with 1GB RAM only (can upgrade later of course) and a 19" TFT monitor.

The Intel is priced at  around 900 euro ($1110) and the AMD is around  $1175.

Is the Intel CPU that much better than the AMD that it mnakes up for the poorer Geforce?

'cept I'm in Europe which means Im f*cked. i.e have to deal with European prices
  • KoSPr0KoSPr0 Member Posts: 66
Mmmmm in that case id go with the AMD n high vid card
  • LeadslingerLeadslinger Member Posts: 12

I Don't know your budget, but if you have around 1500 Euro's as a budget.

Then go for Intel Core2Duo and a Geforce 8800GTX,  The 8800GTX is as fast as 2 Radeon 1950XTX in crossfire.

You need a 550 Watt power supply with atleast 30 Amp on the 12 volt's els your system will crash under some load.

With all this you need some 800 mhz DDR2, i say Corsair pc6400 C4 or C4D

    Redaim.

Actually I can do better for a cheaper price with other dealers if I drop the monitor, the CPU question still remains though.

the AMD chip is better than the 6300 intel

*shit if i had $xxxx dollars i wouldnt make a post about what machine i could build, id just go build the top of the line*
  • jeppahjeppah Member Posts: 56
go for a core 2 duo , and 2gig of ram and a good grafic card.  that way you wont have to upgrade anytime soon

Not realy :) Anyone can Overclock, a E6300 is 1.8 GHZ but it can be overclocked to 2.8 wich is as fast as E6800 its just 500 euro cheaper.

I myself got a E6400 overclocked to 3.8 (Water cooling) and it blows any 1000 Euro chip away.

Don't go AMD go Intel Core2Duo, you are waisting your money if you go for a AMD right now.

If you go AMD right now, you won't be able to Upgrade to a better CPU in the future, you will have to buy another motherboard agian.

As AMD and Intel are using new sockets. Just saying that if you buy AMD you are throwing away money right now.

Since your posting clock speeds you obviously know little about computers.

A clock speed on a processor means nothing.

*and for how long were AMD chips running 1.8Ghz and were faster than their Intel 3.2Ghz counterparts?*
  • LeadslingerLeadslinger Member Posts: 12

I know what i am talking about.

Talking about clock speeds isn't just the whole picture sure i don't wanna get in all the details. About the Core2duo Architecture

if you wish you can read AnandTech, best awarded site for hardware :) here is a whole article about the Core2Duo

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2802&p=1

a E6300 overclocked to 2.8 wich cost around 180 Euro? will beat every AMD even the FX 62.

Both AMD's 4400 X2 EE and Core2Duo E6300 and above are 65nm Die's even tho intel uses less power, so less heat, so no aftermarket cooler needed realy. And being both a 65nm Core2duo still has the bigger RAW preformance over the AMD chips

if ya wanna play benchmarks, post yours of "your E6400" vs my AMD  we'll see who wins  ^^
  • LeadslingerLeadslinger Member Posts: 12

Sure as i know it's pointless as AMD gets beat at this present time. main reason? Cache size, and that for the better unified Architecture of the Core2Duo. My overclocks are for stable gaming, if i would want to benchmark i'll have it alot higher ofcourse :)

But lets not go into that as we are trying to help soeone buying parts, it's obvious you are a AMD Fanboy, I am a AMD Fanboy had it all my life, still i got a Core2duo now.

i edited my above post, as you seem to have lost reality

EDIT: And that my E-peen is bigger then yours aditude isn't helping you :)

EDIT2: here you got your benchmarks, http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/default.aspx?bid=282 thats at stock speeds so geuss what OC would do?

  • KoSPr0KoSPr0 Member Posts: 66
lol for those benches they chose every 1meg cache AMD chip, so your little comparison means nil, and its attitude  ^^

firefox spell checks for you, should look into it ^^
  • LeadslingerLeadslinger Member Posts: 12

Sorry to say but english isn't my native language :)

And lets stop this childish Attitude, as its not helping the guy.

I'll just my recommendations down you do the same.

    - Buying AMD RIGHT now won't be a future proof plan, if you wait till AMD will be releasing their new chips then it might make sense.

Core2Duo e6300 is a very cheap CPU for ALOT of preformance. and having a motherboard that can support Quad core will make you able to upgrade once you need more CPU power.

    Cheers

EDIT: uhm they used a FX-62 wich has a 2MB cache size so yup

  • KoSPr0KoSPr0 Member Posts: 66
ill stick with AM2 n dual core, cuzz theres no games anywhere near commin out that are usin dual core yet, let alone quad.

but hey when the 20 core chips come out and are useless aswell ill look into getting one

EDIT: on the link  you posted the biggest chip they used was the 5K+
  • LeadslingerLeadslinger Member Posts: 12

From what i know at the moment, 8800GTX/GTS utilize both CPU Core's  :)

But thats with the new Boards 680i SLI i think.

Thanks for the advice guys, it's a bit of a toughie. I'm tempted to go Intel but I'll just have to see what gives me more bang for my buck.

I can't believe someone actually told you to go AMD now....That 6300 will outperform the AMD X2 3800 twice over. You can google or yahoo for processor comparisons. The good thing about the new core 2 duos is you can overclock them very easily with the appropriate cooling. Now, there is a difference in the 7600 gs and 7600 gt. The GT just flat out clocks out much quicker, if you go with an eVGA model of the 7600gt it is almost equivalent of a 7800. Different, I'd repost with some options you are thinking about. Vanguard is very memory intensive and it is a good idea to get 2 gigs. Btw, the difference in DDR2 667, and DDR2 800 is not much, the 667 out of the box has almost the same performance and can be overclocked to the same point the 800 can be overclocked to. Let us know how you made it, or what you are thinking about doing!

ATI is not a better way to go.  It's your opionion because you have one more than likely.  You should be ashamed of yourself to try and tell people that those driver poor ATI cards are the way to go.  /slap

Different, go read reviews on the cpu and video card before you buy them then form your own opionion.  Whichever way you go will work just fine, but you will not get an unbiased opionion on these topics as some like AMD and swear by them and others love Intel.  Save with the video cards some love Nvidia and some ATI.

Remember you get what you pay for.

ooookayyy i am totally unbiased to amd/intel nvidia/ati

just as a note intel processors work better with nvidia cards and amd with ati....

and make sure to buy newegg youll probably get it at a few hundred dollars/euros cheaper.

I just built my first comp and have the identical specs of your AMD pick. I have had no problems in VG. Running about the same as everyone else. Honestly though I bought the video card to tide me over until prices start falling on the 80 series. I am running on avg around 20 -30fps in open areas and 10-15 fps in cities.  The AMD can be oc'd quite a bit as well. That would be my choice.
  • LeadslingerLeadslinger Member Posts: 12

The thing is.... i am being unbiased, my opinion and advice is unbiased.

My last System was a AMD 64 and a ATi 1800XT.

    Now i got a C2D E6400 OC'ed (overclocked) to 3.4 at 1.3v  and a 8800GTX nvidia.

So yes i am unbiased when i am saying that this time, This current present go for a Intel Core2Duo and a Nvidia 8800 GTX or GTS.

(You need atleast aa 550Watt with 30 Amp on the 12v rails :D els it will crash most likely)

I myself am Running VG on 1680x1050 16x AF with Multisampling on and the highest possible settings, i get 60-70 FPS anywhere
