if I read it correctly on their site that you get an archetype at level 5 and a class at 20?
After the EQ2 experience with this concept it makes me less than interested in playing this game.
Can anyone shed some light on what they have done different to the failed EQ2 experiment?

I don't know precisely what went on with EQ2, so I will simply describe the process found here.
Your character is created, at which point you choose race and gender, and play around with the appearance untill it fits what you want. The ship you're on is destroyed and you end up on a beach with nothing but a broken oar for a weapon. At this point, untill level five you can play around with basic abilities that have some association with all four archetypes, allowing you some feel into how each plays.
At level five, you choose your archetype: mage, priest, rogue or warrior and gain basic abilities that represent each of the final class choices allowed by your race and selection, once again allowing you to determine what playstyle suits you best.
Up untill now, you're on the islands of Tortage, sort of a kiddie pool for weteared new players to learn the ropes before being dumped out into the main portion of the MMO world, you can skip this portion of the game with any newly created characters if you choose, you only have to "endure" it once. In any case, at level 20, you choose your final class, and ship out to the mainland
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

The biggest thing that went "wrong" was the lack of replay.. if you really only have 4 classes to play around with it gets really really dull redoing the same stuff over and over again to get to the final class..
that and once you know the game you want to jump in and start the action..
personally I dont want to spend 15 hours each alt going through a solo game to play a mmo...
Sadly this is what the internet is all about these days. Illinformed accusations which holds no truth whatsoever. I also wonder what the EQ2 mess-up is all about, please educate me.
Btw, if you're afraid there will be no replay value in AoC I can inform you that it's only 4 archetypes but 14 classes in AoC to date. This is much more than most other MMO out there so I have no clue to what you're concerned about. Again please check your facts before stating something as a truth. If you're too lazy to factcheck ask someone else in a friendly way if your info is correct before putting down a game in the future.
Concerning alts you can skip the newb island if and get right into the MMO if you want to.
You only have to do the single player portion only once. You can skip then every time.
