Well, here's what my squad (now ex-) leader said about WWIIOL

...and is, I believe, the main reason why most of us are hooked with this game and why some people should give this game a try overlooking the not-so-good-at-the-moment graphics and getting past the steep learning curve. And that reason is our beloved PvP.( Did some editing on the original post to clarify some acronyms).

The one genre that's never really appealed to me is FPS's like Quake (and all the multitudes of copies). But I quickly admit that WW2OL owes it's existance to this category. We probably wouldn't have the video cards and 3D coding technologies that WW2OL heavily depends on, if it weren't for these early 'envelope pushing' games like the Quake type genre.

My biggest game experience to date, which hasn't been surpassed yet in terms of length, was playing Ultima Online
for 5 years (from about 1995 when it first released, 'til 2000).

I am sure my WW2OL playing will pass that mark.

Of all the game's I've played, and it's probably been well over hundred, maybe even two hundred or more, WW2OL is the only game that's had such 'staying power'.

The ruthlessly unpredictable nature of what is going to happen, means that it is always fresh and different with the unexpected (either fortunate or unfortunate) happening all the time.

Even when the worst sometimes happens like a whole load of infantry on my opel get all shot-up by an EA(enemy aircraft), or a whole column of PZRS(panzers) gets wiped out by one ambushing ET(enemy tank) or AC(armored car), it still looked cool, and feels very realistic in the way fate in WW2OL hands out different and such widely variable outcomes.

Ultima Online taught me that there's no substitute for a human opponent. UO eventually suffered from players having different expectations of thier vunerability to 'player killers' (PK's), and Origin Systems eventually did much to water down and curtail the player vs. player (PvP) combat possibilities. This was unfortunate because in my opinion, it [PvP] was the best thing the game had to offer.

However CRS and WW2OL suffer from no split personality or conflicting design goals. It's dedicated hard core PvP. In this fact I take great comfort in knowing that WW2OL will not ever become a soft PvP game with 'safe no-PvP zones' and compromised design decision things like 'covert or overt' faction driven PvP (see Star Wars Galaxies) that allows a Rebel fighter to 'covertly' walk deep into an Imperial base.

What games like SWG and UO suffer from is that they try to please both the players who want to fight other players, and the players who just want to craft things, and travel the land and occasionally fight only monsters.

This may give them a broader appeal to certain gamer types, but I don't think many who buy into those games realize what such design compromises do to the games in terms of stifling PvP. Fighting AI scripted monsters, so that you get X experince points, so you can go up a level, so you can buy a better weapon/armour/spell , so you can fight yet another monster that's a little tougher then the last, gets soooooo boring after awhile ...soooo redundent, soooo repetitive.

And no matter what you've done in leveling games (like EQ or AC, or DAOC) there's always someone whose gotten there before you, and has already killed that monster or reached that dungeon depth, or mastered that spell, robbing you of most or all the satisfaction of hoping that you're doing something or experiencing something unique to just you (or your party).

In WW2OL the rolling dice of possibilities is just so endless with essentially everything that happens being a one-of-a-kind event.

It [WW2OL] is a visual marvel of possibilities playing out in a unscripted movie providing visual thrills and heart stopping moments, as the essential element of the unexpected happens all the time!

I think this is why we all love world war two online. It's so unpredictable, and it's so challenging.
