player skill - how much will it matter

have they said how much player skill is being taken into account? for example if a great player is level 60 and fights a level 80 subpar player ... would that level 60 even have a chance?

The 60 is more than likely going to lose. While it's real time combat, there are still stats, and gear to take into consideration.

The level 80 will naturally have an advantage, and if both players are of roughly equal skill, the 80 will win unless a mistake is made. However, the way its been explained to us, that 60 will always have a fighting chance, no matter the gear differences.

However, in terms of random encounters, most such fights will end with the 80s winning, primarily because they in most cases have more personal experience on top of the gear, skill and stat advantage.

First this depends entirely on what their PvP lv is.  If the lv 80 has spent all his time PvE and therefore lv 1 in PvP, while the lv 60 is the type that enjoys PvP more and is lv 20 in PvP there is a very good chance that the lv 60 would win.  I know its going to be rare seeing anyone get to max lv without trying the PvP, but you are asking to beat someone 20 lvs higher then you.

What you mean how much player LEVEL is being taken into account....

Skill is when you get surprised by a medic and his buddy from real life who is a lieutenant, and you pwn both of them with headshots and go on to kill more of their team.

AoC will not have any skill because gamepad is recommended.  Unless you are playing a fighting game, which this isnt, I do not see how this means that AoC wont have button mashing combat ala Bauldur's Gate: Dark Alliance Online.

Well I suppose my feeling on the idea of using gamepad for a game I thought I would buy as my next mmorpg do not matter because I am very biased about the gamepad idea and online time will tell.

should not be as much gear dependant as it is in WoW as per Developers :). I guess we will see that when its released

Actually i would have to disagreewith you.  It was said on the comunity site, cant be bothered at the moment to find link, that it will b entirely possible for a lvl 60 to kill a lvl 80. one reason, is that its not liek wow in that ur natural regeneration of health saves u.

Second reason, is a sytem  designed to lvl the playing field, which makes it so that people are placed in tiers so levels dont matter as much:

    For example:

a lvl 22 wants to fight a lvl 27, when they engage in combat, they are both essentially, for example, level 24's. So it will definately come down to skill.

    hope that made sense

Now we dont have much info as of yet, but in most games 20 levels is too big of a gap between players. But again we dont know too much. IF the level 60 was a hardcore pvp'er and has really gotten alot of the pvp feats and the level 80 is more of a pve'er with no pvp feats maybe it balances the field a little more beyound the skill you mentioned.

From what I have understood imba gear *will* be taken into consideration (duh!) when it comes to different levels fighting. However, as there is skill involved I believe a much lower level would be able to take out a higher level player, but it would require much skills. Notice how Conan always kills those big beasts and almost single-handedly win wars, equipped with a sword and a loincloth? Skill.

Still, that loincloth could be a MK42 Power Battle Armor Loincloth or something.

Will the skills on the AI depend on your level? Or will it be just as hard for everyone?

I sure hope it will be HARD :P

    Cheers

    We don't know, probably not

But we do know this, mob tactics do in fact change according to the percieved strength of you and any party members.

Lets say you are traveling through a wolf infested wood, encounters will change depending on what the wildlife sees.

Wounded solo character - single wolves and traveling packs hounding him everywhere he goes.

Healthy well equipped character - single wolves simply passing the player by and/or calling up help from its pack.

Healthy small group of characters - very strong packs of wolves attacking, no other nonprovoked encounters with wolves.

Healthy large group of characters - no nonprovoked encounters with wolves

Note: not all creatures will have this kind of discerning behavior, and some that do may attack anyways under the right circumstances.

Additional note: scenarios drawn from what is known of the behavioral systems, it may or may not be quite this detailed in the final product.
