How should I configurate my joystick controls? I don't know what it means by x, y, and z (are there anymore?). If anyone could help, I would really like that. Also, my first successful (sort of) ride in an aircraft was quite rough. Did I need to do anything else before I took off, or was this just realism? It was a French, plane, by the way. Thanks.

if it was yuor first ride you'll be lucky to take-off
there are guides and videos supplied by CRS explaining how to get the basics of flying - and in the forums i think there is a run-down aswell
first, let me run though taking off briefly:
1) press <e> start engines - and </> ro unlock steering wheel (steering wheel make steering the plane much easier lower speeds)
2) choose a nice piece of runway and head towards it with throttle to max - press <'> twice to set revs to max too - steer the plane using <z> and <x> - press <F8> for the little extra WEP boost
3) when your tail section lifts its time to pull up and take off - then press <g> to retract landing gear
4) keep WEP on and max revs and throttle to help you gain alt - adjust your trim for lift by pressing <k> - press it 24 times for maximum lift (which is sometimes way too much in a dewo but just enough in a h81 - ALL PLANES have different trim sensitivity)
5) level out at your required alt by adjusting throttle down - turning off WEP and adjusting trim for descent by pressing <i>
6) maintain good engine temperature (on french planes engine temp is the guage that read from 1 to 3) by either fkying continuous revs or around 70 thottle (or both) - although your engine can withstand max temperatuere (3) for about 10 mintes solid before blowing - my usual engine temp when getting ready for a fight is between 2 and 3 for most planes.
now about controller ... hmmm best have a joystick really - dont recommend flying without one. the best kind of joystick is one with a tristable grip to give you control over rudder (this helps with aiming when you are more advanced). If you want more control over your trim and flaps then research something called .cfml files which allow you to keymap with precision. Don't mess too much with gun convergance settings (.conv 150 for example) until you are more advanced. Default conv is 200 which is fine for most planes.
The best thing to remember is learning how to be a good pilot in this game is extremely hard. With patience, and good observance of situations, you will get better more quickly and soon start impressing the enemy with your skills. Remember, THERE IS NO EASY MODE. You may die 20 times before your first air to air kill - and blaming CRS for giving the enemy superior planes will only make you look foolish. Fly high, learn to boom and zoom and always try to improve your gunnery skills and understanding of situations.
It feels good to help a FAF flyer - hopefully we'll fly together sometime - if you get teamspeak we can pair-up for longer.
Good luck
you ahouldn;t really spiral out of control unless ... maybe your jyostick is not centered ? unliklely
are you applying rudder trim keys <,> and <.> by accident ?
or are you flying 109's - in which case dont do any rudder input when travelling at low speed because you will sprial and die
Pete,

Specifically if you need help in take-offs and landings, there is a chapter dedicated to it

I found out that just when rolling, its good to open flaps, then the take off speed is very low. Just a 30 sec after reaching couple meters of altitude, close the flaps immediately.
