Vanguard vs DAOC

I am curious how the combat is in Vanguard especially compared to DAOC. I am a big fan of the combat system specificly the melee system in Dark Age. I am really wanting a new MMO to try. I love Dark Age but I've been getting that been there done that feeling alot lately. As expected I suppose since I've been playing since 2 weeks after release lol. I have tried warcraft 3 seperate times over the last year and it just leaves me wanting. I suppose I fall into the warcraft is rpg lite catorgory. Vanguard sounds like it may have promise and I would be really grateful if anyone in beta could tell me some general comparisions to DAOC.

Most likely you'll want to hold out for Warhammer online... it is being done by Mythic, same people who gave us DAOC and we're hoping that WAR will bring us RvR round 2... better than the original.

I'm currently playing DAOC...and I'm going to give Vanguard a try, but I'd expect pvp to be more like EQ1/2 (with improvements of course) but certainly the game is not centered around PVP like DAOC/WAR are.

as a long time DAOC player I have to say it feels similar. The controls are very similar, there are styles and chains... however chains can now cross classes. For instance... If I were to perf someone, then the rogue would be able to creeping death them, then another person stunning stab... (DAOC reference)

As for the pvp... they changed it to race war right as I got in so I have yet to be able to experience it. I dont think it will be exactly like DAOC... there are not stick or face keys... but parts feel similar.

Give me a week or two after release and Ill be able to throw out my personal review... but its definitely different than DAOC atm.

You can't even compare the 2 games - DAoC still has one of the best combat systems out there imo.  Vangard while being interesting becomes old quick, and performance is always an issue.

performance is an issue on older machines. If you have a new system it performs fine.

    Pyro is full of crap

I have played both DAOC since BETA and I am still playing it daily. There are NO similarities - Vanguard turns into a key mashing clickfest WoW/EQ style  coupled with horrible animations.  The combat in VG is simplistic and lack-luster - there is no character / enemy response to hits/evades/parries or styles.

I have no doubts that I will definitely be buying Warhammer when it gets released. I just hoping for something to tide me over to then. Thanks for the input so far :) DAOC's combat system is the best I've tried specially compared to Warcraft. And  I like the charector devolpment in Dark Age how you have to more thought into the char build vs. just buying every skill you can afford. I was allso wondering how the char devolpment works in VG do you buy your training or do you recieve points when you level and allocate them.

    The movement is similar

Combat, never said there were reactionarys (I havent palyed a highlevel melee so wouldnt know. Have you?)

However there are style chains but as I said they differ from what DAOC has to I perform a style, and my partner can then perform one to continue the chain.

There are attributes, but there isnt a point spending like DAOC.

In VG you get x number of points to spend on your attributes as you progress like str, int etc. So worrying about your spec wont be an issue.

Thanks for the replies, melee comboes that span the party's members does sound like interesting idea. I will have to wait and check it out a couple weeks into retail and see  how the performance and community feels.

    Vanguard vs. DAOC

Population - DAOC has more right now and will have more even suffering from it's loss in population over the last five years.....

Game mechanics - DAOC wins head over heals it's actually one generation above everquest. Vangaurd is eq combat with better graphics.

    PVP - vanguard has none...

PVE - Vanguard is eq like daoc original.

In conclusion you can't compare the two...DAOC has way more features....

They will lag each other to death after running to meet for 3 hours across a barren sandbox world.

That's sad. DAOC is how many years old, now, and they couldn't at least match it?

I know this is a little off-topic, but what about FvF vs RvR - I see some comparisons, but will Vanguard have anything like keep sieges, relics, realm abilities, or anything like that at all? Or is FvF just the ability to gank people, slapped onto a purely PvE game?

Let's see. They are totally different games with totally different goals. These threads are just wastes of time and board space. You can take the advantages of one and make the other look bad all day. Get over it folks.

Thought I remember a quote from someone at Sigil, about how they want Vanguard to appeal to oldschool DAOC players? Or even, that they think that it will?

Granted, I wasn't expecting much from FvF, and have been assuming I'd just avoid it, like I did EQ's old PvP servers. I was just curious if I should even consider otherwise.

The PvE reminds a lot of DAoC but a bit more fast paced. Also at low levels in general you have a lot more skills. What I have missed from DAoC ever since I quit is the reactionary styles and whole HUGE style system.

That being said in PvP reactionaries were only used in duals and 1v1. Also classes in DAoC were much more 1 dimensional than in VG. My cleric in DAoC can heal and buff and pretend to nuke or pretent to melee. My cleric in VG can nuke a bit, buff, heal and melee pretty well.

VG COULD have decent PvP but I don't think it will happen. The game just isn't designed from the ground up for PvP. The imbalances would be rampant as well.

Personally for PvP action I'm waiting to see how WAR shapes up in the fall. VG may be a nice distraction until then, or it may suck me right in. We'll see
