Spoilt from Vanguard? ^^

Well, I was about 2 weeks in the beta now, more or less every day to see as many aspects as possible to make a balanced and real impression.

So, today, I decided to take a break, went back to my old EQ2 guild... wandering through Qeynos... and Antonica... Besides the thrill of FPS and the fact that my character REALLY turns around when I want him and not 5 secs later, I felt... weird. I could not say, I logged out fast. Then, a friend called me, with whom I was in WOW for about 8 months. I never was WOW fan, but it was a nice enough time. He had gotten the WOW addon BC. So... I decided to read previews of BC. Then, when I looked at the screenshots of the new regions... I just had gone though the Dwarf region of Bordinars Cleft the last days (which has a distant resemblence to Ironforge in style), I just started to LAUGH. They publish an addon with THAT graphics 2007!

I guess it was an eye opener. WOW started to look so poor, so childish suddenly with all that edgy comic stuff.  No offense to all who enjoy WOW, really. Each to his, I surely dont look down on people because of what they enjoy. I HAD thought of going back to WOW for a few days, but seriously, just seeing THAT graphics coming from VG... I feel I am spoilt by VG now, heh.

Sometimes fate pushes us... just when I decided not to play VG MAINLY bacause of the fps, my dad called he had some money spare I could use for a new comp AND my long time EQ2 guild broke up big time...Guess I am gonna give it a try. Half against my own judgement I must add. My reviews will still be sceptical, but since all other doors kinda close atm, I think WTH not. Chance is, I may regret it, but so what. Most ppl are still advised to wait, unless you are really out of other games and can imagine to enjoy "building a new world" with all bugs, missing features and imbalance. Since I am otherwise bored, I decided to klick that dam preorder button. Pray, I dont regret it.

After experiencing a huge open world like Vanguard those games will just seem silly.... small and fake. I mean, you just know the zones are not really connected to each other. I have had a deep dislike of zones since experiencing the freedom in Star Wars Galaxies in '03.  I too appreciate realistic fantasy art-style graphics.

I'm sorry, but I saw a few screens from BC yesterday and I couldn't do it either, just based on graphics. The Draenei's arm had like 4 polgons in it and was almost square, it looked so basic. Really puts Vanguards graphics on a pedestal after you see that.

Vanguard has bugs, is a performance hog and is the only game, PC or console, online or not, that I want to play right now. It's just so epic in scale compared to any other game.

With BC, i have to say that they do a hell of a lot with this limitations that they've accepted. The environments are cool and feel fresh for the most part. The background music is great and puts me in a great mood. Some of the new setting is unexpected and very imaginative. The new mobs look significantly better than anything that I’ve seen in the game before. And many of the environments are geniuenly alien-looking, almost overwealmingly vibrant and out sized. You really feel that you are in an old Doctor Strange comic that's come to life.

By comparison, while the Vanguard terrain is amazing, the building design and player models are very uninspired. It’s a strange trade off: the mobs look amazing and are animated well but the players look really dull and move stiffly. The hills and water and trees are vibrant and lifelike but most of the structures are a bit dull.

You’ll see mist rolling out of a cave – a little thing that you’ve never seen before in any game – but then the inside of the cave is uninspired.  I get the sense that the Vanguard art team is still getting used to all the tools at thier disposal.

I'd love to see what the WoW design team could dream up with the Vanguard toolbox. It would be nice to see them just cut loose the way that BC has. (Maybe that exists somewhere in the game, but I haven't seen it yet).

Im not a big fan of EQ2 or WoW, but both of them are far and away better than V:SoH.  They at least have interesting combat, their world isnt boring and stale.   "Oh look, another hill"   eventually that gets old very fast.   I beta tested that crap game for close to a year and its really no good at all.  Brings nothing new to the genre and all you explorers are gonna get tired of seeing the same boring stuff time and time again.

If they revamped their combat and made it actually interesting to watch instead of just staring at the UI buttons that would be a huge jump in the possible fun factor for me, but right now combat is the worst combat of any MMO ive played.

It's funny how the players who had been beta testing Vanguard for several months can't stand the game but people who got into the open beta tend to like it (if they've got a system capable of running it and can look past the bugs).  I think that those poor saps who got into earlier betas soured their impressions of Vanguard irreversably.  Probably because of all the systems they learned that got yanked out from under them when Vanguard decided to go more casual.

Its clear to me you have really not played this game. Did you just pick one race and that was it ? if so might i suggest you go play a Woodelf before you say the buildings are uninspired ?

Gods, all the naysayers take there small little limited scope of the game and think thats all there is. This game is so fricking big and yet we get post after post of some limited view of the game.

Again, you have no idea what uninspired buildings are until you have played other games. Try the free DnL trial then coem back and tell us about uninspired.

Vanguard's graphics have really impressed me.  The character designs on mobs like Trolls and Treants also impressed me.  I'm still lacking the FPS though I have a pretty good system, but I plan to build a new one fairly soon.

Though I have it on preorder, am in beta, and plan to play it on release, I plan on not letting it take the forefront of my gaming until a server with a RP ruleset comes out.  I plan on waiting to play seriously until they make the Vanguard version of FV from EQ.  (especially what FV was originally supposed to be rather than how it turned out)

That is the best part of a MMO... "building a new world".  To the be 1st to experience it. That is why i'm gonna play VG at day 1.  Even if the performance aren't top notch and features are missing.

Peoples experiences sure do vary with Vanguards graphics, and with good reason. Some starting areas are very dreary, like the half giant starting area. They have simple dwellings and live in a hilly area. Hell, they're half giants! What did you expect, the eiffel tower? Start off in the high elf town or the gnome town, the architecture is truly awe inspiring and beautiful. Leth Nurae in particular, the high elf starting city, is just stunning.

Before you say anything, you have to kind of take a sample of the smorgasbord that is Vanguard, not just a bite off one plate.

Firstly, I think judging any game based solely on it's graphics is a bit stupid. I'd sooner play a crap looking game with amazing gameplay than something great looking that plays like crap. That said, I think MMORPGs are falling into a whole cookie-cutter thing anyway, so gameplay is less of an issue.

I'll tell you the main reason for WoW's graphic system - subscribers. You can run WoW on almost the lowest system imaginable now, whereas people with kickass machines are still complaining about Vanguard frame rates in some places. By making super-high polycounts and enabling all the DX9/10 features you can get your hands on looks amazing, you do cut off a huge number of potential players. Typical MMORPG players aren't like typical FPS players - they don't have the newest machines because their frame rate isn't as important.

I'm watching Vanguard because I play EQ, but I'm not convinced I'll be able to run it. But if another game was released that looked like WoW and had new and original features (sadly missing in most new titles) I'd be very interested.
