From the female viewpoint:  I always choose a female character, because I think and act like a female, and it's hard for me or anyone who knows me to think of me as a man, lol. Once I've established a relationship with others in the game, I let them know I'm a true female, and generally the relationship changes, even though I could blast them apart with my eyes closed, they want to "help" or "protect" me.  Or the sexual innuendos start, fortunately I've mastered that skill and can handle my own, hehehe.

There are times though that I've thought about creating a male character just to become anonymous.  But then I wouldn't be able to use Vent or TS, and would have to be very careful to not call the guys I adore "sweety" or "cutie".  Bad habit of mine.

You singled yourself out when you started the thread!

You start a thread on a hot topic and state a biased opinion (biased as in leaning one way or the other not that in your opinion you were biased, which you were, but thats beside the point) and expect to not be singled out? Very naive.

Also, I usually play female characters when I'm playing mages or any magic users, and males when I play melee classes. No particular reason, it just seems to work out that way.

The reason why I first started playing a female character was to test my RP skill. Seriously, how long can most guys play as a woman without giving up the truth? I lasted 17 months. I finaly told someone I was a guy because he wouldn't stop asking for my phone number and if I would go out with him. In my opinion, he is the one who has issues.

To the person who said something about having a guy pretending to be a woman to get you to divulge private details, WTF were you thinking? what the hell are you doing giving out private info over the internet for? If the person had of been a female, there would have been no possible way she could have used your info against you? People who will misuse confidence do not come in one sex or creed or color. The come in one species. Homo-sapien

I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self.

    1) Why does it matter

    2) Who are you (or you, or you, or me, or you) to say whether it is okay or not?

    3) And if it is "wrong" somehow, so effing what?

And no, it's not a free country. It's a free INTERNET. Period.

    Amen to the Free Internet!!!

I am male and I play female characters almost exclusively. I was raised by my mother and 2 sisters so it comes more naturally for me to do so. But then again, I too roleplay (I lasted about 17 months too! )I am in a very good relationship with a woman too who only dabbles in MMORPGs, very rarely. She likes to play my characters sometimes and prefers to play women too, so it works out.

I do sometimes play male characters, as long as the game accomodates a body type that is not a walking gorilla.

This leaves out the good-sized group of people who want to roleplay a member of the opposite sex.  I've met quite a number of these across numerous MMOs.

God Dammit!  You people need to get out more...  I mean seriously, go out and socialize with people of the opposite sex or same sex or whatever floats your boat!  But for the love of God ....Step away from the keyboard!

Im a guy, i play female characters all the time. if anyone asks me my sex, i tell them the truth. if anyone starts hitting on me, i tell them the truth.

if anyone has a problem with me playing a female character, id like to make another admission, i cant shoot fireballs either. oh, and you arent the kind of person i want to play with, i like to play with people who dont give a damn, thankfully thats a good indicator of maturity.

and yes you did, you attacked anybody who plays opposite genders in games....

that was a kind of funny experiment you went for though, not sure what it was trying to prove, but you managed to get some people upset... gratz?you discovered basic human social concepts? not to insult a large group of people without expecting negative feedback?

I only play humans, in any MMORPG, just so I won't risk tricking anybody into actually thinking I'm an Orc or a Wookie or whateverthehell.

(Seriously, why is this always coming up on boards as a burning issue? The only person I can really see objecting to real life men playing female game characters is the kind of guy who hits on me in-game just because I'm playing a female character. And screw that guy.)

Im fine with people playing character of opposite sex (done it myself many times) as long as they dont roleplay.

personaly, I like 3d models of girls, so Id rather look at them them some bearded stinkin beer belly dorf. But, when I roleplay, I like to roleplay a bearded stinkin beer belly dorf... hey ho.. i mean ... YARRRRRRRRR

It's very, very hard to pull off convincingly. Gender is more than just eye candy. Eye candy generally has an effect on most males, because our attraction triggers are overwhelmingly visual. The eye candy also comes without any effort to speak of, courtesy of game artists. Once you actually get into conversation, however, the speech style cues will almost certainly give away the ruse. Changing one's gender-based speech patterns without descending into shallow stereotype is a very difficult piece of acting. My initial urge when detecting a likely gender-switch is to roleplay some heavy action. I almost always resist because I just might be interacting with, for example, an 11 year old. The end result is that I don't have very much fun with the actual interaction, even if I fall in love with the visuals.

Notice that I am not asserting disapproval, I am simply commenting on my subjective enjoyment of other peoples' actions.

I don't consider myself a pervert, or to have gender conflict issues or anything else.

I'm a guy, and I play a guy in all MMOs.

For the most part, it never occurs to me to choose a female at a startup screen, simply because I'm a guy.

It seems rational that everyone would choose an avatar of their own sex, but given that it's a online game, where people go to get their kicks by doing things they wouldn't normally do in life, or to escape life issues, I don't assume anyone is their avatar's gender.

It's still beyond me why people care what my avatar looks like. I often play female chars for no other reason because they look better/cooler. I don't see how it makes me "gay" to look at a female in 3rd person rather than a male.

I always use names that people know me by, I don't give my characters new names for every game I play. Yet, if I make a female char named "MrT" (which is my irl nick in a certain circle), I will still get accused of being a "middle aged guy pretending to be a girl on the internet". What the hell?

Heck, in some games, the different genders have different traits and penalties. In shadowbane, you can *only* be a female if you want to be a hunter. In Diablo2, you can *only* be a female if you want to be a sorcerer. In Tomb Raider, you can *only* be a female, period.

I've been playing games since space invaders, and to this day if the game let's me choose an avatar, I will choose which one I like best or which looks better. Some might be shocked to learn that the female gender tends to appeal more to me visually.

Some random anecdotes I've experienced while playing my female avatars in mmo's:

In City of Villains, I played an overly ugly robot chick with a zombie head. Eventually after a few "are you really a girl?", I changed my bio to read "I'm a dude!". Yet. Twice, during random parties, I had people ask me in private chat, "why do you pretend to be a girl?".

In Guild Wars, people would leave my party once I corrected them when they called me "she". Clearly there is no point to partying with other males as you can't e-date them.

In Lineage2, people would "boycot" my shop once they "found out" I was male, because apparently the *only* reason I had a female character was to flirt with other guys so that my shop would sell better.

Also in Lineage2, my female friend made a male PvP alt character. In the early days, everyone would do the usual flaming and such one would expect from someone who just got pk'ed, but once everyone found out she was female, they would go "gg :)" and such after being killed.

I think the problem is that a lot of guys will play these mmo's and want to meet females in it, so they get irritated when they can't tell who's what.

I've got a whole bucket of gasoline, where shall I dump it?

As long as we're getting into preschool psychogeneralizations here's a few to start the flames going.

People who play the same sex avatar are clearly closet homo-sexuals, as they njoy staring at a same sex butt for lengthy periods.

People who play cross-gender characters are obviously confident enough in their own sexuality to not care what others think.

Of course both of those assumptions are crap, but they seem to fit with the level of reasoning some posters have around here.

LOL, this reminds me a gig from Family Guy:

    Brian: *sniffs Quagmire*

Brian: "You are back from Manila, you had lumpio (sp?) for dinner, you made love to 2 filipino women.... and a man"

Quagmire: "You mean 3 filipino women?....... NOOOOOO....."

Considering that in MMO's you spend most of your time looking at your Avatar.  What would happen if your Avatar was a pic of a porno star.  Those are just pixels also.  I personally think a male who consistently plays and looks at thier naked male toon is probably more likely to be gay.  I know I wouldnt want to see a manly hairy butt all day long.
  • brostynbrostyn Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,092
Personally, I can't play the opposite sex. I tried. I got hit on all the damn time. It was sick what people would do. They would give me money, help me out, and then get pissed when they found out I was a dude. So I stopped making female toons. After my first month of MMO experience I've never played a female toon again, and that was in 2000. Some guy MMOers are just sad, sick, lonely individuals.

I also find that I relate to my toon better if its a male.

Oh, to answer the question, though, I don't care - its a free country. I just can't put up with the ignorant /tells of horney losers.
