Is it just me, or do I see a rip-off here?

When I first discovered this game, I was like: "Sweet! A game based off Pirates of the Carribean! I love those movies!" Then I saw the videos... "Hmm... not the best graphics I've ever seen... Maybe this is because it's so early in development... Wait. They probably want this to be kid friendly... A family game. I'm fine with that, I suppose." My final impression was "It looks pretty fun. I may play it a bit when it comes out."

Then I discovered Pirates of the Burning sea.

The first thing I noticed is that the graphics were about 3x better. I noticed that the game had a bunch of community help.

I also noticed that it was in development for at least a year before Pirates.

Now, is that fishy, or is it just me.

The one thing I can say for Pirates is that it's a good thing that they're making a MMO for everyone. For kids, adults, and people with horrible computers! Look at the system specs estamites!
  • Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
  • Pentium 3 800Mhz processor (P4 1Ghz rec.)
  • 256 MB RAM (512 recommended)
  • 400 MB disk space available
  • 32MB graphics card (64 MB recommended)
  • DirectX 9 or better
  • Broadband internet connection
But still, I think that the idea for this game was ripped off from Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Dude it's just you, and nothig is final so they could make the graphics better, you cant make any final judgments, it's still in development.

The graphics weren't my point. The fact is is that this game is made at least a year after Pirates of the Burning sea. I think that it's fishy....

You cant really say they ripped em off... lets be honest even if they did, all corporations do that, I could list example after example but whats the point. They are all here to get our money. I for one think this game, even though its by disney, will be a good game. Just reading the overview it looks like the create a pirate will be pretty good. (wich is somthing I love).

Ill possibly try it depending on the cost and if Im busy playing other games.

Oh, but the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has
been around since 1967, (the ride, that is,) and the first movie came out in
2003, which I believe is a year before PotBS started development, though I'm
not sure about that.  Very clearly however, since PotC has had its ideas
floating around for so long, PotBS in fact, must have ripped them off!!!111
    /sarcasm off.

Seriously though... they're just both pirates games.  Disney isn't copying
PotBS, since the only thing remotely similar about the two games is their
theme.  Otherwise, these games are pretty much opposites in the way they
    function.

PotC is going to be more fantasy based, and you'll have to have others to crew
your ship.  There isn't going to be wind, so sailing isn't exactly
realistic.  There will also be a voodoo magic system, as well as the fact
that this game is going to be skill-based, not level based.  There is
suppose to be a slew of land and sea missions, though sea obviously will be a
little more dominant.  I believe there are only to be pirates in PotC, but
    that may expand later.

PotBS is going to be much more realistic.  However, I'm pretty sure you
man one-person ships only, no having your friends join you onboard.  Also,
sailing will be pretty realistic, and the game is going to be level based (I
believe.)  There may not even be hand-to-hand combat on PotBS upon
release, so obviously this game will focus almost entirely upon the sea.
You can also choose to be from a couple of different nations, or play as a pirate
    that has no nation.

Yes, PotBS has much better graphics than PotC, I don't think anyone will argue
that.  However, as far as game play goes, I personally am much more interested
in PotC.  I don't want too realistic of a game; that just doesn't seem
'fun' to me.  I'm mostly worried about the community attached to a PotC
game, but I think finding the right niche will fix that.

Anyway... I seriously doubt PotC was copied from PotBS.

What Ill probably do is try them both. I like the idea of having a "crew" onboard my ship. We'll see

Hmm... Burning Sea was put into development first.  But DOVR has been trying to find the right 'theme' for their first real MMO for at least 5 years now.  I think the fact that PotC films got so big just made this a must for Disney.  I don't even think they really cared about BS.  Mostly because DOVR knows they will get customers just by saying its based on the films (and it will be launching at the same time as the final film).

I don't think it was an intentional rip-off.  Disney is not going around lookng for a game to steal.  They can ruin their own just fine hehe.

No, you see "cash cow" here. Pirates of the Carribean has been making them alot of money as a movie. I have no doubt that they'd like to make alot of money as a game.

  • kylecameron1kylecameron1 Member Posts: 240
I hope they dont charge  fee for the game because I want to play it, dont you think that 3 weeks as #1 in box offices is enough money thats just the second movie, plus the 1st, and they still have the third, but ive got a good idea, why dont the two people get together and think about combining it a bit, keep it kid friendly(language filters, no dirty emotes,etc...) make it keyboard controls, no monthly fee, you can run around the whole caribbean, not just the cities and the sea like in PotBS. Then add the voodoo magic and the PvP and PvE and the moving AI and other things, and you have two crowds of people making one for a much larger friendly community with no 20 year olds cursing their hearts out at 9 year olds. Oh yea and they should update the graphics so that they are more modern, so that they are better than WoW but the same cartoony style. Then youve got a game that could accually be a really big game, next add lots of advertisement with the billions disney has, you could be getting to WoW lvl, not exactally, minus 6 million mabye but then youve got yourself a game worthy of todays market that there is a good Idea.

They should NOT make the game free. Free means less GM attention. Little money to keep up the updates. And all around problems.

That $15 a month pays for upkeep, updates, and constant GM attention.

This will be a big game regardless of whether its free or not. Not to mention, ensuring that the parents have to put in their credit card puts some level of parental control.

I know it would be much more convenient for kids if it was free but free doesn't always equal good. It just equals free.

    Free it must NOT be.

  • Ladyluck77Ladyluck77 Member Posts: 12
Agreed.  The community has a hard enough fight as it is, the game certainly shouldn't be free, and I highly doubt it would be.  I'm not sure if they're aiming for the $15 a month like most other MMOs or if it'll be slightly less than that.  Either way, a monthly fee acts as a filter of sorts and is very necessary.

Not to mention Disney certainly wouldn't spend this much time on a game only to offer it out for free.  Despite the cute mouse Disney is a corporation.

I am just happy as hell there are more non-tolkienesque fantasy games comming out. I could go to my grave a happy man if I never see another elf.

A rip-off? More like taking advantage of a popular movie franchise teeming with content for an online game. No offense to the PotBS junkies out there, but seriously, PotBS isnt even going to have Avatar combat!!!

For those that dont know what that means, it means NO SWORDFIGHTS! No fights between actual characters(avatars), only ships. What kind of a pirate game doesnt have avatar combat? POTC Online is definitely going to have my subscription, between the two, for this fact alone.

back on the whole paying thing, personally I hope you don't have too, or at least get some features without paying, don't want to pay without knowing what im paying for first as not too sure whether I'd play this regularly.
  • kimosabekimosabe Member Posts: 516

Sorry, bu they're gonna make you pay for this. Disney is riding the cash cow, and they see this MMO as another source of income. Income means subscription costs. I'm sure they wouldn't be making this game if they didn't want something back out of it. They were famous for cartoons, so they played two huge theme parks off of their stories, and they make people pay to visit those. Tell me why they wouldn't do the same for an MMO?

As for the rip-off idea. No. I think Disney is just trying to get this game out to correspond to the third PotC movie. That timing just coincedentally looks like it could be a rip-off, but I'd be willing to bet that once Disney saw the success of the first PotC movie, they had this idea incubating for a long time.

@Kylecameon: Why do you keep insisting that Disney blends their game with PotBS? This is the third time I've heard you say something like this. It's not gonna happen, and if it did, they'd top SOE on the "What not to do to an MMO" list.

Je mettrai l'amour sur dos de moi.

I would play this even though it is probably more of a family type game.

I think you're NOT right about that, my friend. Fee sucks, i mean: COME ON!

Guild Wars is free too and: it's a really good and populair game man!  If they just could do it like Guild Wars: you can buy money or special stuff in stores or something like that.  My meaning is: GO FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!

  • MoiraeMoirae Member RarePosts: 3,318
You know who says that fee is a bad thing? Kids. Fees aren't bad. They're good. They keep down the kiddies, ensure active GM's, constant updates, new content added, deleted and changed, and makes sure we have constant expansions (EQ2 releases a new expansion or adventure pack about every 6 months. It was years before WoW and GW got off their butt to release expansions. Its called money).

GW is NOT an MMORPG. Its JUST an MMO where you go around beating on other players. Its popular because its free and kids can play it.

Games need money to survive, whether you like it or not.

I would assume, indeed I would hope and pray, that the gameplay in both PotC and PotBS is derived from Sea Dogs, which in turn formed the basis of the PotC PC game and the later Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales, all three of which were developed by Akella.  As long as there's booty to plunder and swashes to buckle, I'll be on board for either or both.

If you personally cover the costs of development, bandwidth, server hardware, server software, server hosting, wages, etc...

Maybe they will do it for free?

Guild Wars is an awful 99% instance game which can be free because PlayNC have games like Lineage and Lineage 2 (not to mention CoH & CoV) earning them money. What do VR Studio have?

well i havent played Burning Sea But i Might check this and BS out.

but games cant be rip offs as long as they dont follow the same story line and the same kind of playing
