I tried the game out a few weeks ago, and here's my experience:
The good:
Graphics are amazingly good
Lots of stuff around to kill
The bad:
In the two weeks that I played, I spoke with 2 real human players, but the "bots" seemed to be everywhere.
You do the same missions over and over and over and over and...well, you get the point.
Oh yeah...if you get too much aggro, monsters will chase you half way across a map. Very annoying.
In the end, this game just wasn't for me. You might like it, but only if you are in to repetition. I was told that there were more real people in the high end game, but I just didn't have the patience for it.
I advised the guy to go read the official L2 forums to get a hint about what is happening on which server and to find out more about the game and it's classes/play styles.
Your way of putting it makes me think that it's been a while since you played the game yourself.
It's more newbie friendly than ever before. All no grade weapons are upgradeable, buff herbs drop from mobs in solo hunting areas. There is full D grade clan armor sets that you get for free when joining an academy of another clan.
And so much more. Just read C5 news on official site and you will understand that so much has happened.
The bad parts would be that the average population is at end game lvls or almost there. but there are 2 fairly new servers which are Teon and Franz (franz went live in september 2006 and most population is in their 50's).
The bot problem as you describe it is ALOT better nowdays. NCsoft banned 70,000 bots last year.
As for the "dying" part. There are far over 100.000 active accounts in NA right now. That was reported after the launch of C5.
100.000/10 servers makes it about 10.000 people per server. Well i know some of the servers are more wll populated than others.
so it makes it more than 10k ppl on some of them. Ther is only one server that i would not recommend to go to and that is Kain that lost about 70% of it's population when they banned cheaters and bots. But hey, that's only good. they have banned shitloads of ebayers and bots and they do that all the time. So fair play winns in the end anyway.
This game is not ment to please the beginner MMO-gamer and a large crowd as WoW for instance.
Lineage2 is a niche game and if you only like the end game content, the game is not for you and you will only end up ebaying to get there and ruin it for the legit players.

Most of the posts I read in this thread is from WoW fanbois. WoW sucks. its a casual game for MMORPG virgins. Most people that play WoW is BECAUSE its EASY and its by people who have never heard of anything else or played anything else. Most of the veterans of MMORPGs think WoW is kiddie land for pre-schoolers.
Lineage 2 has a share of its problems. Yes the repetition can get annoying but I just had to respond to this guy's post. I mean I read it and I was like WTF? Start from scratch with 0, nada, no help and working your self up, you can get 1-30 in a week. I recently went back and replayed it from scratch with no help, just doing the starter quests. Its so damn easy now that there is no reason for any starting player to really complain. If you can't reach 1-30 in a week, you just really suck at games. I wasn't even playing hard-core. It was only 2-3 hours a day and I was able to reach 1-30 in a week. Geebus.
At level 15-20 you should already be migrating from the starter area to Dion, a city within the game. That city already has a lot of people there. Thats why when I read this guy's post, I was like WTF?! If he had reached level 1-15 which takes like 1-2 days casual play, if not 1 day to reach that level, he should have moved his butt to Dion where there are a ton of people there.
There is pretty much no excuse for "I can't find any people so I quit" bullshit.
No Objective then its going to be boring. Games need Objectives like gaurding something or holding land!
I disagree. The reason I got so sucked into Ryzom and Lineage 2 was because of how you could do anything you wanted. You *can* do quests if you want, but I enjoy just wandering about and figuring out how best to progress myself.
Because of how pvp works in Lineage2 and how you can really hurt another player's progression by both pvp and underhanded tactics, it often snowballs and winds up in month-long wars, which - imo - is where all the fun is. Not from some artificial objective presented to you by the game.
