Agh. Are there no good MMOs out there?

Deathstrike2Deathstrike2 Member UncommonPosts: 1,777

I quit CoH/V a couple months ago, and since then, I've tried:

Lineage II, 9Dragons Beta, Vanguard Beta, WoW (not BC), AO, DDO, Eve, EQII, GW (the original), SWG (very briefly), and WW2 Online

Nothing is really holding my attention.  In fact, after a few days, they've all become boring.  Is there nothing out right now that is fresh and exciting with 2007 graphics?  I'm dying for a good MMO that'll hold my attention.  In the past, I've played AC for 4 years and CoH/V for 2.5 years.  I'm looking for my next MMO fix to hook me for at least a year or two, but the well seems to be running dry.

I'll just say you haven't tried FFXI, the game is horrid but it is one of the more popular MMORPGs..for some reason.

no, there are none. Come back in about a year or so (for more disapointments).

IMO FFXI is the best MMO out right now. Altho starting from sctach at this point in time would probably be pretty frusrating.

You'll probably have to wait a few months for that game you're looking for.

Perhaps Age of Conan or Lord of the Rings Online will do the trick for you.

Personally I have very high expectations for Age of Conan, but it's probably not released for a while.

"Good MMO" is currently an oxymoron. It's like in order to make a game massively multiplayer, devs have to toss out everything else that might make it worth playing. I wish this genre would grow out of its infancy, already.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I think you should just do what I do and wait til WarhammerOnline comes out.

If you like all aspects of mmo's from pve, pve, crafting and the like.. Mythic does it right.

Other than that, we're all screwed. Hope that game doesn't end up a bomb tho too.

Every company wants to follow trends ,and no one wants to start one.Maybe in a couple years companys will be forced to change.I mean how do you launch a new game.Call it the next generation of mmo's,and use a old game engine?

Hard  to judge what you're looking for in an MMO. "Good MMO" means different things to different people.  Many of the games you've listed are found to be "Good" by the players that love them (EVE being one example).

Good graphics hardly makes the game good.

Yea right now it’s kind of like the Hollywood movie business, you have a blockbuster and then everyone tries to copy it for it commercial success and judges all that follows based on that phenomena. That is why I hate WOW not because it a bad game, but now all games will be commercial judged by it. That places real financial limits on any games that are coming out, and who do you think suffers, we the consumer, instead of getting it right in the development stage or being innovative it all about "Right Now."

Yeah, I realize that "good" is a subjective term.  I guess I'm just looking for a game that can grab my attention and hold it.  I am tired of the been there/done that feeling that I get from most of them.  And please don't get me started on graphics.  This is 2007 and the days of picking graphics OR gameplay should be long over.  There's absolutely no valid reason why a game can't have both.

    CoV raises the bar...a LOT!

Way too high for the current competition.  I mean, most are not even hitting the bar, they pass under it like a 5 year old.   And just like a 5 year old, they think they do fine compared to dad, after all, dad jump OVER the bar, they jump under, it must be cool, ain't it?

But now dad is drinking beer and not jumping anymore!  *pout*  Stuff about Marvel whatever!

IMO most of them  suck with the current paradigm being used which is simply gear grinding.. I like depth and immersion to my games instead of  the carrot on stick games. The only MMO's I'm looking forward to is Age of Conan and WAR. Hopefully those games and some others that are coming out this year will bring something new to the genre instead of the monkey games like WoW, EQ, and GW, and the list goes on and on and on...

Again, there are not very many good one's out there.

Matter of fact, at this particular point in time, I couldn't name a single one.

There are too many of us, which ensues too many MMO's, which unleashes drone companies trying to win some of the population, therefore cloning what they believe people want.

The number one thing that I honestly think destroys people's interest in MMO's, is the COMPLETE lack of storyline.

If they made a game in which choosing a class  (all the basics, plus subclasses, i.e. necros, paladins, pirates, ect) changes the entire story line (have to dl content for whichever class you wish to play), I believe it would keep people hooked. More of a single player game turned MMO.

I want video's. I want game chapters, and people who progress in higher chapters of the game unlock new items and armors and accessories (real ones that you can see on people. rings of fire that flame their finger, diamond earings that shine in ears).

I want to be able to BEAT THE GAME, waiting for a new patch and chapter to ensue.

That, my friends, is why I think there are no good MMO's on the market.

Try Ultima Online... It's still kind of good now even with all the butchering that went down post-re.

Please tell me you are kidding. That game is going to be nothing more then DAoC II. No innovation or creative just a new setting for an old game. Not much different then WoW happens to be.

The only creative looking games out there are GnH and Conan because both offer to atleast attempt to improve the combat system at the root of these games. The problem will likely be that they wont go far enough and make them dynamic enough but at least the combat system might be more then rediculous auto-attacks and blind timers that is the current stupidity of MOG's.

Plus I hardly think Mythic did anything special with their first game. It was basically nothing more then a copy of what already existed. UO did crafting better then anyone. EQ and WoW take the cake for PvE. Mythic just cloned EQ and added a rediculously stupid realm vrs. realm aspect. I am sure their new game with be much the same though this time they will go for a WoW clone instead of an EQ clone. Hopefully they wont add in the stupid instancing in WoW. Talk about lame might as well stop pretending to be a MOG.

Doors and keys are fine that allow only a few people in an area. Extra instances of the same world are ignorant and ruin immersion. That is one thing that looks gay about both GnH and Conan. PvP mini games? Surely not some more ignorant instances? If you want a PvP mini game add in arenas or something that isnt instanced.

I have friends who are completely addicted to WoW. I played it for 14 months. At the time I thought it was excellent. Now that I'm burned out, most MMOs will have a tough time holding my interest. All of them (that I have seen) are heavily reliant on kill and collect quests. The woods is diseased, go kill 20 spiders is a very prevalent theme. Get me 30 wattzitz to make a cure. I just can't do it anymore.

It very well could be that the dynamics of thousands of people running around on a server dictate these type of quests. But is there a fun alternative without this kind of grind? Don't know...http://images.mmorpg.com/images/emoticons/emt_bigeyes2.gif

I found myself in the same situation.  WoW was the best of the genre available and held my attention the longest since UO then EQ1...then WoW. But whats available now and coming out immediately like Vanguard seem like they are relying on their newness to drive subscribership rather than advancing the genre.

    Short answer: No.

Longer answer:  It looks like 2007 will be a much better year for the mmorpg genre than 2006 was.  That said, though, I've had the opportunity to see Vanguard and I'm underwhelmed by it.  I'm setting my sights on Gods & Heroes.  It has new "squad" gameplay that looks very interesting, and it will with future expansions become a "realm-vs-realm" kind of game.  Plus, what's not to like about graphic animations that allow you to strike an opponent where it hurts?

The combat in Age of Conan is supposed to be pretty dynamic. Hero's Journey is supposed to have custom quest chains. Both are due out in 07 so maybe there is hope! :)

I was hoping to find some good suggestions, but it seems everyone is kind of at the same point. I played UO from release to Renasance when it was butchered. Then I played COH for a year. I've tried almost all the "free trials." I even bought Guild wars, but nothing really seems fun anymore. I think the part i hate the most is "quest." Go kill X number of guys and then come back and i'll tell you to kill x number of almost exactly the same, but a little bit harder guys.

I play planetside right now, but it's not really a MMO.

Hopefully AoC turns out to be worthwhile

I moved from CoX to Vanguard, as did my VG.

Give it another try. Try out diplomacy, crafting, explore quest, get past level 10...
