I heard about the 14 day free trial over at turbine games for Asheron's Call, so I figured what the heck I'll give it a try since I haven't played it in a couple of years. I download the file install it, update the game by downloading more files, setup my account and am looking forward to playing some ac.... I pick my server to play on and.... error message. Unable to locate data files. Crash to desktop.
I tried uninstalling, reinstalling. Nope, same error. I tried to post on the turbine official forums, but they complained that I needed to register, when I registered, it complained that my email address was already taken. Fine, I'll login with my previous account... nope won't let me do that either since it's not active.
Well after all of this non user friendly aggrevation, I've just decided that it is simply not worth it. I can play any number of online games that are better than ac, and actually work.
R.I.P. AC and Turbine Games
It's dead Jim, it's really dead.

But I will say dont say your ac free trial was a waste of time when you didnt even put any time into it, if you played and it ended up being total crap gameplay/graphics/time spent ingame then thats when to post about it like that.
The OP is 100% correct, the trial is a waste of time.
If you go to the trial boards you will see that I, and many other people who wanted nothing more than to play Turbine's game, and possibly find a new home there, are blatantly ignored by the devs.
We submitted help tickets, e-mailed support, posted on the official forums, everything, and not so much as a nod. I am not expecting them to say "Here's your fix" but a simple "We acknowledge the problem and will try to figure out what's causing it." would be nice.
The fact is that Turbine doesn't give a damn about AC anymore, and the aren't afraid to show it. They are not doing ANYTHING to help the playerbase expand, except release a buggy patch for trial members and not offering support for it.
As I said, I don't want someone to kiss my feet while they fix it, I would simply like some acknowledgement that the 50 people posting on the forums with the exact same problem are getting some F()*&$()*% help.
Thanks for reading.
As soon as I saw that I figured they must be in trouble if they are charging for that.
I wouldnt go into the "New playerbase" forum, thats mostly new players posting in there id ont remember seeing a whole hell of alot of dev posts in there. I'd recomment the tech support section, or even just general discussion, alot of the players even know some of the solutions needed.
But yes turbine has definately stopped caring about ac1. When ac2 was released most of the dev's went to that, then when that failed, they came back then went to ddo, when that failed they put more money in ac1, for a limited time. Now that lotr:online is going to be released they're starting to put more resources on that. But I guarantee since they dont even use the same kind of combat engine or any ideas from ac1, that again it will be a fluke and AC1 will be their main bread winner.
How do I migrate my old MSN Zone account to the Turbine billing system?
MSN Zone accounts can still be migrated to the Turbine billing system. Although there is no guarantee that the migration attempt will be successful, Turbine Billing can attempt to migrate a MSN Zone account to the new Turbine billing system. The fee for the migration service is $19.99, billed to the credit card associated with your new Turbine account upon successful migration. This fee will not be charged if migration is not successful.
If you have not yet purchased Throne of Destiny, you will be provided a key during migration to create a new account which includes 30 days of subscription time as well as access to the new Throne of Destiny Content. ***Please note: Please note, Free Trial Accounts cannot be used for migration. If you already purchased Throne of Destiny there is still a $19.99 charge for the migration service. You will be granted an additional 30 days of game time, for a total of 60 when migrating and upgrading at the same time.
Now after hearing that all i have to say it'll be easier to start from scratch. Especially cheaper. But even then (those that have lossed the chance of having the 14 day trial) the game isnt really worth it these days, #'s are growing and what not but its getting more item based each patch. I used to love this game, but with the addition of more quest items that are needed or even MUST HAVE above loot items, just gets more wowified each time.
I disagree. They should have done it the opposite way. Charge right away, but have it free now. The population of AC is getting smaller, and they are trying to increase numbers. Charging $20 for older players to get their chars back isn't going to help the numbers at all, in fact, it will hurt them. I might have come back if I could get my chars restored, but I'm not paying $20, on top of the $20 to buy the game too. No thanks.

I dont think they're trying to increase the number of players. I think their trying to squeeze every litle penny out of the ac community that they can. They just put their website down for maintenance, and they had IF YOU WISH TO REGISTER FOR DDO go to the billing website www.BILLTURBINEBS.com. Or this to be exact
Turbine.com is undergoing maintenance. Please try again later.
If you would like to register for Dungeons & Dragons Online™: Stormreach™, please visit our <a href="https://billing.turbine.com/>billing site.
Anyway i dont see any "OR asheron's call" in there. Asheron's call is keeping them alive but they wish to forget about it. It has the best combat system i've seen (Untill darkfall comes out) in an mmorpg but they're not striving to make it better. Look at the content size of their patches compared to the same of old. Only ting they really did right is kept expansions to a minimum.
