Sometimes what I read is interesting... other times less so.
I want a clear cut image of the game; PvP rule sets - incentive to pvp; guilds? Are they more than loot distribution systems? I read about guilds traveling together and those that were offline can use the leader's last bind point. I can't begin to describe how good of a feature (guilds moving together) that is.
How does combat LOOK? Is it 5 guys standing around swinging their weapons like any other MMO or is it more engaging?
Player housing/player cities; Since pvp doesn't sound to be too dominant, I take it player housing will not be very pvp enabled. Could my guild's city become THE market of that part of the world? Would we gain royalties from every trade made?
I have a PC that can run this game very well and I want to see videos of high quality game play. The links in one of the forumgoers sig doesn't allow me to download them.
When looting, do items fall to the ground or do you pick them up in a window that only you/your group can access?
Do casters stand there and spam a few buttons? Does mana take long to regen out of combat?
How does the BoE item rule set work for the economy? Is it going to be interesting to actually sell them? Also, what's the drop rate on items? Is it more like WoW where you get an item every 10-15 mobs or more like lineage 2 where you could find an item once every 4 months that was worth an arm and a leg?
Feel free to add any description of the game, as long as it is clear cut, straight to the point and no philosophical tales or what "could" happen.
I've left my last MMO and BF2142 is entertaining for only so long (who's idea was it to make an FPS WITHOUT capture the flag?) so I'm looking for a new game.

There was a login screen, I logged in, chose my server, which was not locked or down like two others.
Chose one of my characters I wanted to play, then was stuck at "connecting to server"
That was fun, for the second night in a row. But not as fun as when I started Human Blood Mage and got about 3 quests to do Sunday night, oh then the server went down so I didn't finish them.
I'll update you on more of this fun later later!!!
I am getting an everage of 20-40FPS with med-high settings so as soon as I can get the FRAPS codec to work will post

tbarney, is this your first beta?
the clearcut answer is in 12 days this rough, unpolished, unbalanced and unfinished game is going to be hit with a SH*T storm of database crashes, server queue overloads, billing system failures and everything else that accompanies a much anticipated title's launch.
Any new development will halt and the issues of critical functionality will take the front - content patches will start appearing 1-2 months after the launch frenzy settles and game stoppers are discovered and fixed ( NOT going to happen in free BETA) As someone wisely pointed out this close to launch all a developer can do is about change the color of font on NPC names without altering multiple complex systems that drive a persistent MMORPG world.
If you like the game now and are willing to pay $45 + price of box while fighting to stay connected the next several weeks that it will likely turn out to be a very pleasant game. I really am impressed by how feverishly they are patching now.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

I just want to thank you Euthorus for this post. I have to say that I agree mostly and this is a very objective and informed look at this games launch.
They are patching this game right now like a bunch of madmen, and although there will certainly not be any magic fix all patch, the game state is improving at a rate I can only call miraculous. The performance of the client does frustrate even the most hardy of fans, but the world therein is just so epic in scale and beauty that I am willing to put up with it, and in fact am enjoying Vanguard like I didn't really think I could enjoy an MMO anymore.
In recent months I had thought that I might be getting jaded. WoW does nothing for me anymore, EQ2 is amazing but I have just seen too much of it. DAoC made me extremely happy and is probably the best MMORPG ever in my opinion but I just couldn't find a good guild to hang with, which is mostly my own lazy fault. I even resubbed to Lineage 2 for a month late last year because of the latest expansion (C5 i think) and I just couldn't get down with it.
For some reason Vanguard just beckons me in the exact same way that Ultima Online and Everquest did, and no game truly has since. I just like to hang out in the world of Telon, whether I have hours or just minutes to play. Last night I had about 10 minutes to play after work, and that's what I did. I played for 10 minutes lol any other game I wouldn't have botthered but I just had to check out my new dward paladin and I actually got a quest done.
Vanguard is so far from perfect, but perfect is not apparently what drives me. What drives me is seeing the sights of a huge world that is highly detailed and realistic in a fantasy sense (I know I know, how can fantasy be realistic, but it can be just enough to immerse yourself). I thank Sigil, if only for affirming that I can like a game as much as I liked UO and EQ.
I understand different phases of beta and fill out bug reports from an objective point of view, trying to let the devs
know what I think is fun and what isn't. Trying to play, trying to exploit, and trying to test the limits.
Unfortunately I have only been in the Vanguard beta for about 6 weeks. But what I wrote is really a factual representation
of my experiences this week. Perhaps the downtime is due to a lot of the patches they have been doing, multiple patches per day.
I apologize my first response did not answer any of your questions. I believe the bigger issue is that it is 2 weeks away from release
and in my humble opinion, not ready. I'm sure the devs are working their butts off. and I hope the game lasts 6 months out of release so they have time to make it what it has the potential to be.
I wish it success.
To answer one of the OP's questions that I didn't see answered, successful offensive casters are generally ones who can stand there and spam buttons without dying, because movement is very slow when casting. That is not always possible. In solo, death is best avoided by picking your strategy for a particular encounter then executing it very well. Movement is often the key to success, particularly when using snares and mezzes. The optimum mix of spells, motion, and physical combat differ according to the mobs and the situation. Screw ups like hitting the wrong buttons, or not responding quickly to adds and resists, is often fatal. In groups, role assignments are fairly standard, and preparation matters. It is good to assign some group members as dedicated rear-guards, because respawns are common and vicious when battering through some areas. It's also good to plan the long-term buffs, short-term buffing assignments, etc.,. The unprepared tend to make more frequent naked corpse runs than the prepared. I've never played EQ, EQ2, or WoW, but my combat experiences so far sound very much like the recounted EQ experiences I have spent many hours absorbing.
There are still lots of normal hit you til' your dead mobs but there are a lot more surpises here than most games (and this is all before level 15).
One clearcut image of Vanguard : Saga of Heroes? Well, I think we just recieved one...let me check the back.
.....Yep! Found it. Here you go, have a nice day!
Very amusing good sir. But you forgot one important thing. I've added it for you.
Another question; How long is the average solo fight with a mob; with a player?
What, as a hardcore gamer, am I looking forward to in terms of high levels?
