Character customization?

Hey there,

I've only just become interested in this game since watching a few of the trailers and interviews and can say that in a lot of ways I'm eager to pick this up but in others I'm reluctant.

One of the reasons for my reluctance to pick this up would be the character customization. Most of the characters/NPC's look almost identical with some very minor differences in clothing and skin colour.

So, I guess what I'm asking is: how detailed is the character customization in this game? (ie, hair/skin colour, different coloured clothing, facial features, gender, etc).

For a reference, I'm from CoH/CoV and a sometimes WoW player.

Thanks in advance

AoC has a simply awesome customisation system. Sliders up the wazoo, changing things from body dimensions, skin tone, hair length, everything. There are four sliders for the cheeks alone! You can 'break' your character's nose, add scars, tatoos, etc. I think/hope the gear will be equally diverse.

The *NPCs* in recent videos have been worryingly repetitive, yes. I hope that changes.

The article below deals with some of this (sorry, not familiar with the code of these forums).

I don't think you will be able to get your character a big belly, but i do know u can make your face well-rounded at least...

If you can adjust the roundness of the face it would be odd if you couldn't add weight to the character since it would look very odd if you couldn't.

How's this? Its essentially the same character every time, only a few of the 40 available face sliders adjusted

Sliders are how a game gives fake customization IMO.  So what if you have 40 sliders.  As soon as you put on armor, everything you just "slid" into place is essentially gone.  Give those three different faces above a helmet and the only thing you'll be able to maybe notice is the mouth and eyes, which are basically the same.

Customization past the character select screen occurs in Armor customization and variety of weapons/armor.  AoC hasn't even mentioned dyes which is starting to become more and more desired.

So what if my eyebrows are slightly more arched and my biceps slightly larger, if we have the exact same armor set on, then I consider that to be ZERO customization.

Then dyes are zero customization as well. Then really the only thing is left is the art of the armor/weapons and gear in general that you are equipped with make a difference.

Devs have stated the following before, example; if a ranger can equip medium armor (ie chain/mail) but prefers to wear leather instead he would be more agile (conan.ch has one of the dev quotes describing this), this would give a different 'look' from ranger to ranger.

I know this game  is a virtual world and all, but how many people wear jeans and running shoes on daily basis in real life? Most of north america heh :)

Umm, how are dyes zero customization?  They aren't there for the first 5 minutes of the game and then hidden.

You can change the look of your armor at will.

What if I want to wear medium armor and look different than someone else with medium armor?  Of course you'd look different if you wore a different type of armor.  People that wear plate will hopefully look different than people that wear chain or leather.  But if you want to look different than everyone else, you shouldn't have to change the type of armor you're wearing.

For all of the innovations that AoC is offering with combat, they're not offering character customization innovations at all.  No Dyes, no banners, no cloaks.  Doesn't look like very many armor sets judging by the latest videos either.

Sliders are Zero customization because they're covered up for 99% of the game.

AoC is the first game to have anything close to the level of Char customization as CoH, which is that that game did best IMO...

Anyone saying there isn't enough char customization either doesn't know WTF they are talking about or just being a hater, and isn't worth my time to rebut
