The first one is still active. There are some districts where you have trouble finding groups, but it is possible to hook up with some guildies by the time you hit the end game missions.

In the last couple of weeks, after speaking to a friend who bought GW last year, I've been thinking the same thing. Although I'm still enjoying EQ2, I cannot suppress the feeling that nothing has changed (besides the remarkably excellent polished feel of the game) from the 1st generation MMORPGs.
Not only is GW casual friendly, combines a PvE and a PvP system, but more importantly, PvP is small-scale, team based PvP which focuses on build and skills rather than items or level. I absolutely love the concept that only 8 skills can be choosen per encounter, which adds a strategic PvP element because one has to think about the meta-game i.e. what are the common builds, their strengths and weaknesses - without having to spend 6 months grinding to hit high level or camp x mob for days for phat loot. The latter is NOT challenging - merely tedious.
I am seriously thinking of purchasing GW in April, after end of financial year and my exams. The only fly in the ointment is that my friend bought Factions last year (slaps head) and I really wish to purchase Prophecies. I'm assuming that unless we purchase the same expansion we won't be able to join up in-game or PvP?
Might have to try and 'persuade' (coerce *cough*) my friend to purchase Prophecies.

Thanks for the response. I assumed as much [PvE]. At least we'll have the PvP arenas. Haven't bought GW yet, but from reading people's opinions, I'm 95% certain that I'll purchase Prophecies, rather than Factions.

I agree. Buy Prophecies. I by far enjoyed Prophecies the most, followed by Nightfall. Factions wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be, buy the alliances was a nice edition. Your friend is missing out on the best part of Guild Wars by not having Prophecies imho!
I agree, I think prophecies is the best one to start off with, but its a bit slower level wise because the quests dont give as much exp and skill points.

It is always best to get Prophecies seeing as it is the first in line but you cannot not get Factions. Doing factions for the first time was just as good as doing Prophecies for the first time. Although i have to admit that factions is only really a one off, 70% of that game is Brown and boring with endless streets of slums... But its a great game for a one off.
I find it funny that everyone hates Factions. And some even call it "Once off". I have beaten Prophecies one time. I have yet to beat Nightfall (and at this pace it'll be 2 more months lol) but i beat factions 5 times. I liked Factions. I thought it was really good and the storyline was really really good. Much better than Prophecies (talk about once off type of game) and had a lot of replay value. You got the two sides to do as well. And did I mention the storyline? I thought it was great. Apparently, I am alone in this though I also was flipping out about Vizunah Mission where you have 16 people and is one of the 2 (I think) missions where two parties start out seperately and then you combine to make one huge party. Along with the Alliance Battles, I think this game offers a little bit of everything but not too much of anything. Is for sure my fav. It has even crept into #1 spot knocking out Nightfall and Prophecies.

All three are quite a bit of fun.. each adding more intersting elements, i.e. option of teaming up with hero's in Nightfall, which is why if I were just getting into it now, I'd buy nightfall only, then purchase the PVP packs of prophecies and factions in the online store, so you get the skills to PVP with. You'll have plenty of game to play with NF .. tons of content, you'll enjoy the benefit of hero's instead of just henchmen like in Prophecies and Factions, and you'll have all the skills unlocked so you may be 'marketable' within the community.. if you only have Prophecies, you're pretty much useless to the pvp community.. things are super competetive, if you're build isn't desireable, nobody will team up with you in Team arenas or hero's ascent.. GVG will be a stuggle, unless you're content with running versus noobs in the 5000+ rank. I'd start pve with a monk first, you're always going to find a team that needs a monk pve or pvp.. bottom line if you're just getting into GW now you have a lot of learning .. do yourself a favor and log on to the wiki and start reading up on skills and builds. I'm pretty excited to see more posts about people getting into it just now, i've been playing it since the first beta weekend.. i took a month off twice since 2004.. Good luck, PM me in game if you'd like under 'iris qbela'
I hope that Factions & Nightfall eventually release a Game of the Year Edition too like Prophecies did. At least an Anniversary Edition for Factions & Nightfall since I don't think they were actually a game of the year like I think Prophecies was. GW can be awesome fun even if one doesn't participate in the PvP. I just wish the economy wasn't so inflated or I got luckier on the items I wanted.

However, for newcomers, Proph and NF are still "friendlier" IMO due to the longer PvE part and smoother progression.

True, the PVE is awesome for sure.. plenty of stuff to do.. I would still reccomend getting Nightfall instead of the other 2 for PVE though..
Last time I was at Best Buy they didn't have Factions or Prophecies.. would probably have to hit an online outlet.
