I know Sigil employees tend to stop by here from time to time, so perhaps we can get some answers from them if none of the players here can answer it for us.
The servers have been announced. There's 7 US normal PvE servers, 1 US Roleplay PvE server, 1 European PvE server, 1 European PvP server, and two US PvP servers: One normal rules and one alt rules.
Questions:
What's the difference between the normal PvP rules and the alt PvP rules?
Concerns:
That seems like too few Roleplay servers to me. I know that roleplay isn't super popular amongst MMORPGs, but looking at EQ2 Ican see that the PvP servers are the most popular. I'd probably designate 2 US Roleplay PvE servers and 6 US RP-optional PvE servers.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
In fact, forget the SWG!!!!
It's a good idea not to put up too many servers at first, considering the initial release spike tends to exceed how many players are playing 2 months later in MMORPGs. Underpopulated MMORPGs defeat the point.
I don't mind having servers relatively heavily populated. I could definately see Vanguard supporting 5k concurrent players per server, or more.
Putting up more servers probably wouldnt take long and I would imagine they are looking at it from the PoV of how bad it looks to be merging servers a few months after launch.... nothing gets people crying "DEAD GAME" faster than server merging.
As for the PvP rules... Id be interested to hear exactly what thats about since I plan to play on a PvP server.

i am very interested in the 'alt' pvp and rp rulesets as well
From what I understand, regular PvP will be the standard FFA pvp.
Alt PvP will be some sort of Teams based PvP. Perhaps it's done as Continent vs. Continent, or perhaps it's done by Race, or perhaps it's even done by starting town.
I'm not sure on the exact nature of the "alt" rules, but I do know that it will be some form of Teams based pvp.

I'm not sure if this is too few servers or not. Only SOE and Vanguard know how many pre-orders there are. I'm not sure at all of what kind of load these servers can handle either.
They might be pretty cautious as to the amount of servers they spin up at first. Servers that have no people on them make no money but spinning up additional servers probably takes not much time at all.
Blizzard severely miscalculated the number of servers at launch but the day of release (as I recall) they brought like 20 additional servers on line. And then many more in the following days.
I give SOE and Sigil enough credit to estimate pretty closely their customer base on release.
Hope you all have fun in Vanguard
