Best free mmorpg you've ever played ?

By free I mean completely free (no monthly fee & no cost for the box). I'm asking that question as I'm looking after some good free mmos to try.

So far, I'd have to say the best totally free I ever played was Silkroad Online. How about you ?

UO free shards or AO. They have their flaws, but overall f2p MMORPGs suck so much ass that there's no real competition to these two.

While not mmorpg's specifically, I've spent tons of hours on Gunbound and Pangya/Albatross18.

Gunbound is a worms-like game where you earn money which you spend on equipment. Pangya is a golf game where you can, as well, customize your character with stuff bought by money earned. They're both incredibly addictive games.

Catch: They both contain a lot of gear which can only be purchased with real money.

Shattered Galaxy is an mmorts with rpg elements. While you also have your own avatar with his own stats, you raise your units in the same way you'd raise any rpg character, by earning them xp and upgrading them. Instead of playing 1v1 matches like you normally would in an rts, you join one of 3 warring nations, and join (or initiate) matches where several players are on the same side, commanding a handful of units each.

I'd pay to play this if it was slightly more polished.

Catch: You can pay to upgrade your character, raising your max stats and enabling some very few extra functions.

I was subscribed to anarchy online for several months before any of the expansions were released. Considering that the base game without any expansions is now completely free to download and play, I'd say that's worth checking out if you're not too concerned about graphics. It's a massive game.

Catch: You have to purchase and subscribe to the expansions.

Shadowbane is actually one of the better mmo's I've played since I enjoy open pvp. It's very awkward to get into though, and will be frustrating if you don't like pvp considering anyone can kill you anywhere with no penalty, and you lose everything you're carrying when you die. Even shoddier graphics than AO.

Catch: Uncertain future since the developers were basically fired and reformed into a new company.

if u like playing silk road u might like playing 9dragons, its freee to play and no subscriptions, but theres a catch :p later on when it goes live if u want some end loot(i think its end loot) u have to pay for it...BUT the point is, its free to play :) i played silk road for 1 week only reaching lvl 20 but i played 9dragons for 18 hours LOL yes 18 hours nonstop and i made 38 lvls...but its not the lvling thats my point...its how much i enjoyed playing it....lots of styles to play around with lots of people to hang out with and FOR NOW armor/weapons doesnt seem to be a big issue....but thats for now only once it goes live it might be a different story...

If you want Free to play MMOs, You must Check out Gpotato.com. Flyff, Space Cowboy, Rappelz....All fun as hell.  Both Flyff and SC I have played quite abit and you can spend real money in the games, but most of the stuff you can buy is for looks or buffs so no one is the real better off than someone else for buying something.  Unlike gunbound and some others that if you have enough money, you almost never lose/die.

    Great sites for Free MMOs

    www.gamengame.com

Velks, Aquasol, and Malkaria on Lawolf server Flyff.  Add me if you want some in game explanations.

Shattered Galaxies - The only game with premium or Item malls that I've actually considered putting money into.

MU Online - Grindy as hell, but it kept my interest for awhile. Community ruined it.

Silkroad Online - Only got to lvl 16, but was pretty good for a F2P. Just as boring as the rest though. idk why I even have this on here.

Minions of Mirth IMO. Free version allows you to play your character to level 15/5. Your primary class can go to 15 and secondary class can go to 5. Premium edition, you can level your character to 100/100/100 and do combos like monk/cleric/wizard. Good game. Graphics are a little EQ 1'ish,but overall a good solid game, and they are still making improvements. Oh, and just wait, people can run their on versions of the game and totally mod the way it was intended to be. I played the free version for 2 days then decided to buy the retail which is only 29.95, no monthly costs, pay once, play forever. Hope to see you in game.

to be quite honest I havent found a F2P game yet that can compare with a P2P game. There always seems to be something missing. But if I had to choose a game that was F2P that kept my attnetion for awhile I guess I wouls choose either RYL2 or Knight Online. these games were pretty good for awhile and werent really heavily grind based, meaning, they had a decent amount of Qs and or crafting that broke up the grind. But in the end they still didnt compare to what a P2P game can offer.

Anaychy Online I guess, but it was P2P when I played it.

I had some fun in Silkroad too.

    Very subjective best MMO list:
Saga of Ryzom, Anarchy Online, Lineage 2, WoW
    Waiting for:
Age of Conan, Aion, Lineage 3

    lets see...

I would say Shattered Galaxy for requiring a little tactics and the fact that this game is one of few mmos that contains battles that make any diffrence to thier faction. Only bad part I have seen is the lack of expansion ( due to lack of player base ) and the requirement of paying to get rid of the half-exp limitation once you hit level 50 and to reincarnate.

Without a doubt... Albatross18. Albatross is an insanely addicting and fun game. Play with other players around the world. I hate golf, but this game is ridiculously fun. Smooth, crisp graphics also help. And it is free!! Seriously, if you haven't given it a try yet, download it and try it free at www.albatross18.com
