Eve was awesome with only interceptors and assault frigs, and if the tracking changes would have come about before those frigs it wouldv'e been even better without them. Before player conquerable stations as well, so Eve was best before teh first expansion (exodus is the one i'm thinking of, I dont' think gemini or caster or whatever it was called really added anything).
I haven't played the WoW expansion, cause I quit when they changed my macro making capabilities. But i think I can safely say I had more fun pre wow expansion as well cause the few dungeons I ran after the macro changes was more of a chore then fun without my custom made one button mashers.
I hear a lot of other people saying SWG, and DAoC were also better before expansions.
So I think they should just make sequels to games instead of expansions. Eve 1 people would still be tackling in vigils and sitting in safe spots for hours afk, hauling 20 jumps to mine megacyte in non alliance space. Eve2 would have Player stations and tech 2 stuff, and lvl 4 agents.

Shrouded Isles was a great Expansion for DAoC....... till ToA killed it.
The First Expac for L2 was good.
I liked DAoC much more after SI came out, I liked L2 more after the first expansion, allthough I hated the game in general.

That is excepted the stupid purple patch (well know patch that changed every heroes effectiveness like 3 month after launch).
Biggest problem with MMORPG is that dev forget that a MMO is supposed to evolve, instead of evolving, all they do is expand it ... the result is very simple, even if the global population stay the same, the poulation spread out, and every zone seems empty.
CityOfHeros: no more than 50 heroes per zone
GW: prophecies and faction zones are empty, or at least they seem empty compared to a few months ago.
The most funny joke is when a MMORPG say "our game world is so vast ...", let me continue for them " that you will feel so alone, you will not even notice you are playing online"
So, yes, every game is better before they start expanding it, spreading out the population, add stupid features and put nerf everywhere.
Agree with "yes and no". The first DAOC expansion (Shrouded Isles) was good, according to most folks. Trials of Atlantis came next, and it drove a large portion of the community away. (because they tried to cater to the PvE crowd, instead of staying focused on their core RvR constituency). New Frontiers... sort of a mixed bag... some love it, some wish for the old days.
Catacombs brought instanced dungeons, and while the content was cool, most agree that it really made the open realms barren. Later changes like double experience in the "classic lands/si" brought many people back into the light, which brought things back into balance somewhat.
Darkness Rising, some better dungeons, pvp and horses... a thumbs up for most folks and the latest is Labyrinth of the Minotaur... which gets mostly a thumbs up (though some claim it has ruined the RVR out in the New Frontiers)
Expansions are a trickly business... seems like generally they alienate more folks than they add to the game, with a net loss in subscribers (over the longer term).
People slam WOW's BC for being too much "more of the same" and not adding enough new content....but it might just be their "safe" approach to expansions (no pesky, over powered new classes, or game mechanics) is the better way to go.

Imo most games got beter with their expansions, EVE is one of them
thers did bad expansions, somme of them not the first
DAoC (not the first),UO(not the first), PS
Ruins of Kunark (EQ) GOOD
Velious, Luclin, LDoN, etc BAD
In the case of EQ, the amount of expansions started to rip apart the "EQness" of EQ. The next expansion will further gear, making the previous gear obsolete. At first it is fun because it seems "new", but it just seems like ice skating up a hill when expacs happen four of five times a year.
Star Wars Galaxies is a totally different case. The factors that ruined the game (from what I've read) had nothing to do with "expanding" the game, but actually CHANGING/OVERHAULING it. A.K.A BAD
Doktar - 70 Troll Priest - Perenolde
IMHO Anarchy online was ruined by the Shadowlands expansion. It changed the whole character of the game to EQ ver 1.5
Depend
About EQ: Kunark was okay. Velious was horrible and not even worthy of the name trash, since trash were once useful (despite the fact I actually enjoy the grouping dungeons, they are nothing in the scale of that expansion). Luclin was sweet. PoP was merely acceptable. LoY didn't change much IMO (neutral). LDoN was the best and would have brought EQ to new summits if they would have kept that route, without backing off like they did just after the launch, removing the upper gear from the list. EQ has a second wind at LDoN, the game was filled with players, all more casual from one to the next and all enjoying the game a LOT. GoD was trash and I turn away from that game ever since.
LDoN was CLEAR. The player KNOWS what to do. Initially, the rewards where AWESOME, until they cut them off. See, exploring and searching is a part of a MMO, but when you are utterly fogged and have no idea what to do, when and where...I think you lose most players. Yes, someone like me would stick with that, but most players won't bother, it has to be clear and direct...and LDoN was all that, with the promise of the best gear (almost)...especially that raiding in LDoN was broken and prolly unfixable so...the players where happy with the situation!
For CoH, if you remove the NERFING, the expansions are pretty good and nice...but the nerfs are not. As a result, pre-I3 was a LOT better than now, just because of the impact these nerfs have on the players in a RPG. We are not playing a shooter like counterstrike, an action game, a racing game or an arcade game...we are PROGRESSING, any move backward is automatically bad. This is a reality for RPGs, once the players get to play (post release), nerfing is always bad; no matter what.
I dunno about other MMOs and the impact of their expansions.
