I played SWG Since July 2003 just after the launch my Friends had to drag me into the game they called my Wife and had her bye the game for me In July of 2003 for my Birthday.

The wife had to babysit and so I opened the game and said to myself why would anyone pay 15.00 a month for a game!

I loaded the disks and sipped my diet-pepsi, when that Last screen came up Saying the Greatest story ever told Yours I was truly primed to play. Yes I saw the First Star Wars movie about 11 times when it was first released.

I logon and WOW, WOW, WOW oh my gosh what had I been waiting for silly me. I pull out the the note my work buddies gave me and sent a tell to one of them.  Soon I had credits going into my Bank Account and off to Naboo I went to meet with them.

They spent about two hours babysitting me in the game, then I was off for a little exploration hunting and by the time I logged off it was 5:15AM the next morning, I was so hooked after one session of PRE_CU SWG, like some one on crack.

I quickly learned the game it was not that hard so much to do in it, I was going to be a TK-Commando, My Friends wanted me to be Imperial but I said I'm not sure I want to be until I was ganked in the cantina in naboo by a swordsman and a Combat medic both Rebels, you see I had a tef for just killing some rebel npc. So I decided that the rebels not the imps where the bad guys and I joined the Ranks of the imperial forces.

I had so much fun with playing this game PvP raids on Rebel Citys and thier bases, and in the Streets of naboo fire fights would break out and quikly escalate to a huge baattle do to the awesome tef system.

After one year I decided to try for Jedi I ground out 31 professions to get it Bio-Eng being the one that Opened it.

Then the CU came out and my Jedi became weaker and I was mad, but I stayed on and learned that new system.

Bye now my guild had 7 Jedi and they all had cloak except me, I was Master Saber Master Defender, Healing the rest,  I was used for bait in Theed and C-Net, lol its sooo much fun when 3 Guys think they got ya then 6 Jedi uncloak, lol the good ole days!

Then the NGE came out and I lasted 3 days into it and quit that abortion of a hack job, I think they all should be fired they Destroyed my Avatars and My 2 years worth of work.

Hey Smead I hope you read this I will Never play a SOE Game again you SOB!

    Great story Ajax,

I hate it that all the hard work we all put in went down the drain. I hope you find a game you can enjoy as much in the future. (maybe you have already found one. I have not so I feel like a dirty tramp cause I went back. But thats another story.)

Thanks for the good read. Brings back memories.

What can I say this type of story is echoed throughout pages of forums, people loved SWG, Part of the guild I was with still talk of the old days. From the moment it was released when the first mounts came out, the first vehicles even Jump to Lightspeed.

But its like all things Money gets in the way of what we want, why else do networks cancel great TV and keep producing mindless crap.

SWG was once a place of true adventure and fun

From all accounts now it is a place of few people.

Like most I find myself in WOW awaiting the next great people rpg.

Hundreds of thousands of players said this.. sent emails of it and expressed it all through the NGE and still to this day do.

Hence why the NGE is a failure.

i agree with the OP i was happy for allmost 2 years till the cu..but unlike most i just played the game rarely ever read the forums till after the CU(which was garbage) but nothing prepared me for the New Garbage Enhancements.it was so upsetting to log in Nov 12 2005 to that so called SWG..i knew then that the game died gone was the unique game and all my friends parted as well..at least the Crap Upgrade was still close in gameplay even with the WoW crap ui and the lame zip timers on everything..but it was still playable and had the same professions still there..

What i dont understand is i bet there is over 60k or more players that would come back if they announced a classic server..i know i have my 2 accounts ready!! but alas that'd be way to easy.hell id take it with all the bugs and broke crap no problem..cause we worked around it and still had fun..Now i try every new MMo game that comes out to be sorely disapointed with the same ole same ole..All the same classes and be level whatever and stuck with the same toon unless you want to start all over and rinse and repeat..

If SOE doesnt want my money hopefully some dev team with Some Vision will one day make a game similar to SWGprecu..i doubt it will ever happen cause everyone seems to want the same silly lame Wowclone...lets make wow 50 billion times but call it something else...wow is wow and its a good polished game..but man is it boring to me and i like changing my toon but not when im stuck being the same thing with different talents..LAME..if i got tired of being a Rifleman(allmost 2 years) i could try a different combo but took a few days sometimes a week to change..that was alot of content for me, strangely it never bored me even tho its was a grind..weird i know but i think it being star wars helped it not feel grindy to me..But i and eveyone else had a choice to be whatever we desired..Now you dont and thats industry wide..its all Loot kill Raid and Levels with the same rehashed Gameplay over and over just some have more meat to their clone than others..

So we all sit here and discuss how much we miss the gameplay and community but yet noone at soe or any other dev team has the nuts to try to be unique...cause everyone thinks SWG was a failure due to the complexity..it failed cause SOE rushed it never fixed it and thought fix ment Nerf..They broke more than they ever fixed and then the huge booboo called holocron..i want deversity i dont want another wow wanna be...So Classic servers would make us all stop posting and complaining but i think by the time they realize it we will all have moved on and never look back...just my 2 creds..

If this next chapter fails, then so does SWG. I still play on Ahazi server and I know a ton of people who will quit if it's not worth it. As for me, I'll stick it out until that time and if I don't like it, then there is no use putting any more money into SOEs pocket.

However, if they bring back pre-cu servers, I'll end up re-subbing in a heartbeat

I know your pain my friend, sadly it came to this. I miss my Jedi badly some days and he will always be with me even though the game killed him. I was in SWG from the beginning and I loved every bit of it until they screwed it up. I think what kills people the most is that most of us truly put ourselves in our characters, we didnt just play our characters we became them and that is one reason SWG had the best community of all time.

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

Enforcer thats exatly how I feel, the game was about community and friends.

I had 8 guys and gals from work that played together we still cry about how the game was destroyed.

Oh well there is hope on the horizon if you know what I mean, a new Hope!

I have read scores of posts, reviews, articles, and interviews each a lament of the same sad truth.  I didnt lose as much as others but  I know plenty of people, some in my own family, who invested years worth of  time and energy into building characters, grinding for hours on end (the honest way), essentially living the greatest "story" (as offered by  SWG) only to have it ripped out from under them.   But what urks me is the disregard for the SWG community.  I dont care if they crank out dozens of CUs (those I could live through).  SOE ripped the heart out of the community by eliminating the professions of thousands of characters and called it Enhancement.

Who needs a "cabal of bitter players scheming to destroy SWG" when you have SOE doing a fine job of that on their own?   And here we are over a year later and STILL fuming about it.

I have come full circle on this that I decided that Im a Star Wars lover than I am a SOE hater and SWG could become once again a game worth playing and rebuilding the SWG community around again.   It will NEVER be what it used to be, some people are that bitter and untrusting of SOE, but there is hope still and here is my opinion.    Read on...

If you want to resurrect SWG you need to woo the "silent majority" and the casual gamer (for whom the game has been revamped) with a radical offer.  A free-to-play level of membership.  Thats the ONLY way to revive SWG.

Creating a ftp level of membership with limited  profession choices and level caps, like other games are doing, would add population the servers, stimulate economies, grow the guilds and increase player interest in general.  It would attract and convince some former players to try NGE and offer more to casual gamers than just a emoty theme park of NPC quests.

And, assuming Jedi would not be open to free-to-play members, it would recreate the exclusivity of Jedi.

This game will limp along and the forums will continue to rant against SOE unless some of the old fan base isnt lured back.  SW, for all its popularity, actually has a much narrower demographic than, say, people who like medieval fantasy i.e ALL the fantasy mmorgs are doing better than SWG and are continuing to grow when, logically, SWG should have a corner on SW fans.

As long as people are mad and vocal then they still care and want more of the old days back.  When the ranting angry posts finally die down, thats when SOE has lost their chance to revive SWG. A free-to-play level of membership (plus advertising) would jump start SWG.

cool story very close to my experience.  I started in Beta 3 about a month or two before release.  Never missed a month of playing until NGE hit.  It was devastating because I was in the process of learning CH again for the third time but the first time since they CH revamp.  I was really enjoying myself and all the tricks and abilities that I kept learning for my pets.  The knockdown trick was one of my favorite and handy in PvP.

My path to Jedi was much slower, I only reached Jedi during CU.  I didnt do it to get Jedi but just to get a 2nd character.

If you ask me now, I think the golden years of SWG was from launch to the end of the year of 2003.  by that time everyone was chasing holocrons and grinding like machines instead of enjoying the game for what it was worth especially PvP.   IMO, if you had taken out uber buffs and armor, and put a better way to get Jedi, it would have immortalized the game.
