AFAIK, to make the highest and rarest items in crafting you have to specialize. It's like a pool of points, you could have 30 points in general outfitting, 30pts in carpentry, and 30pts in masonry, or you could have 90pts in masonry instead, etc. And as you advance in a skill you can fine tune your skill in a certain area even farther.
There will be recipes tied to factions, and some accessible by only diplomacy or adventuring. Factional recipes will cut you off from opposing factions. Recipes only available by experimenting. Each item will be unique because of the multitude of add-ons and steps in crafting an item.
As for the tavern analogy, it takes a lot of different pieces to make houses and ships, items that span crafters' expertise. Houses need masonry for walls, carpenters for roofs, clothiers for furniture, metalsmiths if you want the walls braced, etc. There will be the option for someone to solo build a house or simply buy it, but it's cheaper and more efficient as a group activity.
Vanguard is intriguing, but still doesn't have enough appeal to draw me away from SWG, although it is kinda nice to see a new MMO finally taking some of the unique features of SWG. One of the bigger issues is that I have a hard time getting into anything that involves fantasy.
Hello Obraik.
Is not Star Wars fantasy? You mean like dragons and wizards? Obi-Wan was a "crazy old wizard," according to Lars, hehe. But the good news is Vanguard will be on Station Access. My cousin is a SWG vet too, and is not big into fantasy either, but he beta tested some of the game and seemed to enjoy it.
I miss the good ol' days when nerds were actually intelligent.

Star Wars certainly has its fantasy elements, but it's all mostly technology based, not magic, etc. It's not just that though, there are still mechanics of SWG that I prefer over Vanguards - and of course there's the community and friends I have on my Server which after nearly 4 years I've become quite attached to :P

Technology in this world is based in magic. But it is technology.
Yeah, it's hard to leave behind old friends. I still like SWG, but ready for new adventures. I have Station Pass so will play SWG from time to time, especially with the coming changes. To each his own. /peace

I'll probably give Vanguard a try at some point in the future when the SWG servers are down for a publish, once they release a free trial of course. Was gonna try the beta, but I don't really feel like paying Fileplanet money :P

Yeah, at one point I was attached to my crowd as well, but then they made it so that "anyone could become a jedi or anything right from the start". Everyone I was friends with quit the game, as did I. I feel it sucks now, wheres the customization when everyone gets the same spells at every level? I don't know, it had so much potential pre- ... i don't even know what this new publish is, pre-customization? That works, because thats what happened! You can't be a BH/Combat Medic anymore, you're one or the other.
Vangaurd looks promising. I tried SWG recently, I can't get over the fact that I can be whatever I want from the start. Poor SWG....i'd return if it changed back!
Wow. Actually sounds like one of the best games on the market, for free-thinking and freedom of gameplay. That sounds so awesome, can't wait to fuckin' try it.
Release Date?
(Can you attack from your mount? How laggy is aerial flight? )
jan 30 is the release.
they are implementing mount vs mount combat after launch. razor said he was attacked on his flying mount...
here is a link showing a lvl 30 morphing, one into a firey phonix and the other into a wolf, in the middle of the video
Thats awesome, i love the vid. Seems fluent, although my guess is he has a nice computer. In regards to armor there, those two chars look similar, completely similar. Do a lot of people look similar?
In regards to the classes that can morph. What classes CAN morph? Can anyonme link me to a site with complex class descriptions? Also, on the Vanguard web site, there are two continents with Classes/Rasses marked as "coming soon"? These coming in the release, or further patches? It seems odd to add many new races in a patch.
I know that they plan for many of the things people have talked about.... but sadly most of these wont be in when the game goes live, honestly play the game first, then see if you like it. Some of the people that post here are HUGH Fan boys, they cant tell you how you will like the game, only you after you tried it can.
If only i could find a troll with a tin foil hat. =(

Each profession has expertise now, and while not as indepth as the skill box system pre-nge, it still allows for character customisation. It was inevitable that something like this was going to happen to Jedi though. Jedi was made as an alpha class, yet it only took hours of grinding to get which isn't enough to keep it in check - grinding isn't exactly hard. More and more people were unlocking it, which forced more people to unlock Jedi. It's no fun being a "normal" profession surrounded by a mass number of alpha class people.
Wow. Actually sounds like one of the best games on the market, for free-thinking and freedom of gameplay. That sounds so awesome, can't wait to fuckin' try it.

the reason they seem so simular is because they are pre mades, it was a beta event where u were able to try out a lvl 30 toon. so they all had the same armor on and stuff

I need some advice: I'm a long time WoW player, but Vanguard looks interesting enough to spend 50 bucks on it. Can anyone tell me the similiarities and major differences bewtween the games? I've been burned in the past when buying the latest, hottest game (i.e. DDO, RF Online, etc...) so I'm overly cautious befor buying anything new.
Yes it is like SWG. Look at the graphic engine, its very similar. And from what I've heard it has many similar qualities. Now of course I didn't ask the questing assuming that it would be exactly the same, as thats rediculous. People have said they have similar qualities, which I can visibly see in a lot of the screen shots.
In response to earthhawk:
I've gone through my fair share of MMO's too man. RF Online was my last one actually, which I quit to re-activate my WoW account for the Burning Crusade. But I'm tired of WoW, the grind is no fun, and there is no atmosphere. It truly is an MMO, not an MMORPG. I can tell you Vanguard will be nothing like WoW, and if you're set on WoW's gamestyle then you had either get out of that mindset, or reconsider Vanguard. VG will be a game that has a lot of freedom and customization with what you do with your character. There will be no absolute Dungeon to visit at level 20,30,40 etc. Its one big world, so find things to do yourself. Its got a lifestyle to it, from what I can see. You can just go sailing around, decorate your house, take time to appreciate this other "world". If you've played Ultima Online, I'm guessing it is quite similar to that in the respect that you do what you want to make your life. Haven't played the game yet, just done my fair share of research.
While I've never played SWG myself, pretty much everything that was asked / mentioned earlier is definitely all true.
Here are a few pics I took during the last few days. These are all pretty much near the lowest graphics settings so that I can get 30-55fps on average with 2 *cheap* 7800GT video cards. Some of these images are Beta and Release images.
The rest of the computer is just AMD X2 4200+ and 2GB RAM (now upgraded to 4GB but not necessary.) Nothing is overclocked at all, not even close. The cards are really old, like first generation ones.
I like the last picture, it was about 10 seconds before getting disconnected at the end of beta on Midnight.
*No zones/instances. Just 1 freaking HUGE open world in Vanguard!
*Player placed houses. The houses are not zoned. The only difference is you can only build on pre-determined plots in order to protect the environment (brilliant, SWG should have done this). The home decoration options are about 100 times that of SWG. You can even build a house on any one of hundreds of remote islands.
*In Vanguard there are literally over 60,000 items in the world already and every single item can be dropped in your house like in SWG.
*Vanguard features the "you can go anywhere" mentality. If you see it you can go there.
*Harvesting resources so reminds me of SWG. Hell, when you chop down a tree for wood the tree actually falls to the ground where you can then harvest it.
*SWG had space travel - Vanguard has sea travel! Huge open oceans to travel upon with your player-made boats of all sizes.
*You can tame wild beasts and mount them. In Vanguard you can fly dozens of mounts anywhere!
*The most amazing character-creation options ever. Period.
*You can custom design clothes, armor, weapons and even 'brand' it with your own logo.
*You can create and name your own songs (Bard).
* Item decay! And the most impressive crafting system ever devised.
*The CHALLENGE you sorely miss... is back!
Good post. Right on the money and this game will be awesome!
Oh, here are the main INI file changes that I used, this helped a lot with speed (doubled it nearly.)
This is not the whole file, just most of the main parts that had the majority of changes to keep the quality good, but not overkill.
Spent some time testing a lot of bunch of these settings to figure them out a bit better. I also highlighted in red a lot of the settings that made the biggest impact on things, the ones highlighted in green are also somewhat important as well, though maybe not to a larger extent. Most the non-highlighted stuff I believe would be nearly at the default of "Balanced settings" (I think.)

ShowBloom=False
GrassDensity=0.250000 <-- Definitely optional.
GrassBlending=0

bUseHDR=False
bUseToneMapping=False
bShowNames=True
bShowMyName=False
bShowTargetReticles=True
bShowMyReticle=False
FlashTargetsName=True
DetailMode=1 <-- This is new, 3 was too much.
TextureDetailWorld=5<-- This seemed to effect just about *everything*, so I set this to medium (4-5) and almost everything else to lowest. (These can be from 1-7 except RenderQuality & Billboard.) Try it on 5 first, then 4 if you are comfortable with performance and want slightly better quality.

iShaderCacheSizeMB=10 <-- Leave this alone it doesn't really need to be higher than 10.
Antialiasing=0
AnisotropicFiltering=0
MaxStaticLights=4 <-- Can increase performance a bit lowering this to 4, even 2 if need be.
LightComplexity=0.250000

GlobalAtmosphere=0.250000<-- Most people don't like this blurry horizon thing, but I do.
GlobalEnvironment=0.110000 <-- 0.11 makes for nice water (as long as RenderQuality is from 3-5.)
GlobalDecorations=0.010000
bUseOcclusionQuery=True
FarClippingPlane=200000.000000 <-- Careful with this one. lol (I think this is like a 11/4 mile view distance... Not too shabby!)
GlobalTreeLODBlend=True
GlobalSimpleTerrain=True<-- This helped a bit but still looks nice when off.
GlobalHardwareSkinning=True
GlobalAnimationLOD=0.500000 <-- Could set this to 0.25 at the expensive of choppier animations in the distance.

Vanguard is like SWG the way EQ1 is like SWG.
They're both MMOs but they're NOTHING alike. If you go in expecting SWG you're going to be sorely disappointed.
