City of Heroes and Villians gives us a look at the Issue 9 Update.
Issue 9: "Breakthrough"
SUMMARY
Issue 9: Breakthrough, the ninth free expansion to the City of Heroes® universe, introduces an entirely new level of depth and gameplay to the franchise. Players acquire and invent new "loot," and have the option to buy and sell it using the new hero and villain auction houses. Along with Issue 9's other great features, this brand new system results in a wealth of new gameplay for players.
FEATURES
Invention System (Heroes and Villains) Using the highly anticipated Invention system, players acquire and collect "loot" in the form of Salvage and Invention Recipes. These will be used together to invent uber-enhancements, costume pieces, new powers, gadgets, and more. This creates a world of new activities, rewards and character evolution!
Auction Houses (Heroes and Villains) Where better to buy and sell all of these new items than in the new auction houses! Wentworth's Fine Consignments have sprung up throughout Paragon City while the villains prefer to do their bidding alongside "black-market" trucks placed throughout the Rogue Isles.
Statesman's Task Force (Heroes only) This high-level PvE content allows eight heroes to team up in order to face and defeat Paragon's greatest enemies! Completing this difficult challenge results in some of the game's rarest loot! New Hamidon Encounter (Heroes and Villains) Not only do villains get their own end-game raid encounter with the "Hamidon," but the new experience is also brought to the Heroes side where players must use new tactics to bring down one of the "City of"s greatest threats.

Though I can't wait for this addition, let me be the first to say for others "oh noz, pht lewtz, WoW inf3stat10n, DOOOOOOOOm!!!" It just makes me feel all glowy to see people that loved/supported/still support ED, fear the implementation of this system. Hello, this was part of the reason ED was implemented so why the crying game now? Good, I hope those people do leave and make way for a much larger subscriber base.
I completely disagreee with the naysayers and think this is a good addition for the longevity of the game.
CoX needs non-combat content and an economy. 'nuff said
I agree, this could save the game if done right.
WOW! cant wait! this is surly going to get me subscribe again. anyone knows when its coming?
another thing i was wondering, i read closely, and it said that you can make "powers" (?!?). and "gadgets" (!?!). like, i know whats those are, but how will it work? what does gadgets do? and where does the powers apear? ( on second thoughts, forgot about temporary powers, so i guess that would be the answer).
will be great. ( if done right, so do it right..)
Sacred.
As for the inventions, youll collect salvage off of enemies and you go into the university. You can combine salvage to form temp powers or enhances. Som of the enhances give extra power to your abilities. An example would be a fire damage over time element that you can add to non fire powers. This would be like a martial arts scrapper that has fire punches. Not a part of the set.
Give a man fire and he''s warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he''s warm the rest of his life.
Personally, there's nothing more super hero-ish than inventions. Spidey's webshooters. Reed Richard's Ultimate Nullifier. Tony Stark's armor. Batman's utility belt. The list goes on and on.
People are weird. Gamers freaking out over new powers has to be a first.
Monkeyhead
AHha ha hahahahaahahahahaaaa! *sigh* Well. I do wish them all the best and I look forward to reading if this much anticipated inventing system actually works.
And perhaps I might be enticed back. Perhaps.
When oh when will someone learn that superheroes are NOT elves? This is such a rich world of possiblities - yet - so perverted into a fantasy world in tights. Sheesh.
I was on the fanboi forums for over a year before this game came out. There was such excitement at the possiblities - then I only lasted 6 months in Paragon until I was totally bored and disillusioned. We fans had tons of great ideas of how this should work - yet the dev's virtually ignored our input and came up with this wannabe game. Great graphics, excellent customization, yet... no soul. Nothing to entice you, nothing to seduce you, nothing immersive about being a superhero.
Don't get me started on what they "should" have done... so many of us tried to tell them years ago and it just fell on deaf ears. It will be a very long time before I get emotionally invested in a game like I did this one... and be so disappointed as a result.
This makes me so glad I quit this game.
The *only* thing City of Heroes had going for it was that it was a unique MMORPG setting. It used generic classes stolen from fantasy MMORPGs but at least it got rid of the loot and crafting systems that infect other games.
I thought Cryptic did this because they were smart enough to realize Superman doesn't run around gathering loot so he can make junk to trade with Batman. Wolverine doesn't collect garbage so he can make new costume items to sell to Storm.
Now it seems that the only reason Cryptic never did this was because they couldn't figure out how to code it until now. You might as well force everyone to wear chainmail and get pointy ears in this game because an economy will turn it into nothing more than a clone of every other game out there.
So much for being original and inventive, but it's clear that Cryptic never really had those qualities in the first place - it just seemed like they did.
Finally! Something to do beside grind and hunt for worthless badges! Something like this should have been implemented at release. And for the people saying that this will make the game like all the other fantasy games out there, hello? We already have two sword sets, an axe set, a mace set, and martial arts. Heck, we even have costumes that look like plate armor. Did you guys just miss all this stuff or what? If none of this ruined the game, I fail to see how making new temp powers, gadgets and costume pieces will. Get over it or move on.
Am I in the minority? Depends on how you count potential gamers against registered CoH'ers. I think I'm in the majority of people who would play a really good, innovative SuperHero game, but choose to bail on CoH.
Gah! One of the best things about CoX was the lack of an economy and auction house. The economy in Final Fantasy XI Online was one of the two reasons I finally left that game (the either being it's a total time sink).
Maybe if I don't stare directly at it, everything will be okay... it will be okay... it will be okay...
On the whole running around getting loot thing... there's nothing un-superheroish about it... plus there's multiple types of inventions...
Inventions is mainly a level 50 thing because otherwise you outgrow what you make. And seeing as there's nothing in the game for level 50s except the Hamidon (which is being changed to be more fun) and the PvP... which still needs some balancing... it's a welcomed change that will only impact the normal leveling up in a small way... unless you're unlocking costume pieces or emotes or the like... in which case it does not impact gameplay at all.
Unlike other games, most loot can be obtained in instanciable missions (quests)... the more "unique" inventions are made through more or less "unique" drops with a proper level of challenge tied to it... so you don't get the big uber invention by killing 10,000 minion of X type...
As for Superman... his Fortress of Solitude is filled with collected artifacts and inventions he uses on specific missions... such as the Phantom Zone projector, a mother box, various types of Kryptonite, the shrunken city of kandor, Brainiac's Kryptonian database, all the surviving animals and plants from the collector's ship... he's got a pretty good stash of crap at Starlabs too like special suits and all...
As for the devs not listening to players... CoX is known as one of the few games where the players get direct access to the devs and where the devs are very present on the message boards. MUCH of the player suggestions make it in as content... cutscenes, flight poses, trenchcoats, wings, archery powerset, masterminds, the return of the 5th column, much of the balancing comes through player feedback...
There's limits to what the devs can implement... budget-wise, tech-wise and well... crackpotted-ness on the suggesters part.
Invention specific loot... just like hamidon origin enhancements... are valuable loot... which don't affect the gameplay for the most part.
The players sitting at level 50 are a different crowd and they do want the loot based system.
This is supposed to be the expansion where Villains finally get their epic archtypes.
I think they have wanted to implement this system for awhile, they have had salvage drops for a long time, plus they have stated that they have planned out the next issues up to 10 or 12 or something insane like that. I think it will be fun and interesting. We all need some new way to make money besides battling the baddies. Plus selling iventions makes it better for those that are too high level to make both money and supergroup base prestige. I think there could be more benefits to this system but then again we'll have to see how they set it up and see if it works and is any good at all.
They're just throwing away all the things they said at the beginning in an attempt to try to keep the game alive, I'm sad to say.
My gosh this forum's like a rollercoaster.
Well, I guess I can be considered a fanboi of sorts, although since hitting level 50 I have seen the lack there of. and see why so many have dropped the game subscriptions. I personally don't think it is the loot system that would do it, but it might be, and I'm not saying this will "ruin the game" or anything. sort of looking forward to it to see what it's like.
For the villains who are looking forward to their "epic archtypes" if it's anything like the hero epics don't look forward to it too much, it's not that great. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice change, and a bit more challenging, but that's it.
The thing I'm looking forward to the most is the States TF. I hope it's good, I hope it's hard, but not too hard. i.e. hope it's not the kind of thing where no one ever wants a certain archtype or style of archtype because it's deemed "useless" or "ineffective" due to the way the TF is set up, or the way the villains work.
Anyway, hope it's great, gotta go.
Lack of Villain Epic AT's aside, this looks like a good Issue. I just hope they increase the rate of salvage drops to compensate for the increased amount of craftable items. I can never seem to have enough Mystic Foci....
Course, this was just a preview. We will probably see more info as time passes.
