You should have put this in the WoW forums imo.  I will try to answer some of these however.

    1) If you buy WoW you can play in the WoW lands.  BC is an addon to that, and requires that you have a copy of WoW first.  I dont think BC is a standalone product.

    2) WoW does have a CD key.  You can access any WoW account using any CD key.  All the CD key does is allow you to install the game and play the game on your computer.  For example my bro lives in another state.  If I have WoW on my PC and he gave me his account name/password, I could access and play it from this computer.  I could also play any other persons account from this PC if they give me the account name/password.  I will not need to know thier CD keys to play.

    3) You will sorta be able to play with BC people if you just buy Wow.  Here is how it works, there are certain zones that BC enables people to go too.  If you have the CD for BC you can go there, if you dont then you cannot zone there.  When the BC friends come back to the WoW zones you will be able to play with them there.  So basically if your friends are spending alot of time in BC areas and you only have WoW original purchase then you wont be playing with them very much.

Unfortunately I dont know enough about the game to tell you whether or not people will still need to play in the orginal WoW zones or if those BC zones are self contained, IE auction house, Vendors, Low Level areas, PVP zones .....  I am sure someone who plays the game can give you that info however.  Ask in the WoW forums.

So to sum that all up.  Yes if you want to play with your friends in BC you need to purchase Wow and BC.

Hold on just a minute, you intend to play WOW because plenty of others are doing so?

That is a piss poor reason to do anything at all, at least on its own.

Do you have freinds playing there?

Have you had a chance to try it before, and liked it?

Do you find the game itself appealing, based on what your research tells you? (not the series the name comes from, its a different experience entirely)

If you answered either of the above in the affirmative, don't let me get in your way, because those are good reasons.

Otherwise, do your homework, find out what style of MMORPG gameplay you most enjoy, and find a game that fits you. Otherwise, all you might find is out that there are 2 million people in the US that have different tastes than you do. No MMORPG is for everyone, WOW currently has the greatest mass appeal, but as these boards will probably soon confirm, a lot of people cannot stand the game.
