Games of the MMO type that weren't MUDS didn't really come around until the what mid early 90s? Ultima's only been around for 10 years and I know they didn't do Beta with the original game because it would of been damn impossible to download the game at 14 to 56k dialup.
eh, they'll mail you a cd (or used to at least) UO definitely had beta testers, and MAYBE this guy was one of them (probably not). So who cares? I mean, I appreciate the great civil service of trying to save people money, but you're not the first on these forums. Go into the special section called "flaming that won't change a single mind" On a side note, I wouldn't of thought mary_jane was 40 years old ) Ill have to reconsider lots of names and the people behind them I guess
I meant beta testers in the form we have them today. but since you caught me on that i guess i can clarify that. From what I remember of those days it would of been damn near impossible to download the entire client without waiting for several days to get it. All their testing would of been internal.

Customized character creation More quests to get away from the grind of leveling PvP rulesets (FFA & RvR so far) Auction house in game e-mail The housing from FFXI and EQ2, which is absent from WoW, by the way. Group chain skills from FFXI and EQ2, which is also absent from WoW. Need, greed looting from WoW A perception system that allows for counter spells and skills, I don't recall this being in any other MMO I've played Deplomacy which is a new way to level your civil faction to get items and access to NPCs for quests An improved crafting system that is better than EQ2's crafting, which has the best crafting system to date IMO An improved custom graphic engine from the Unreal Turnament engine Mounts and Flying mounts

I just had to come out of lurking and drop my 2 cents in here... I just love how all these people keep chiming in and claiming to be "Professional" Game Testers, and such... It really makes me chuckle! I never knew there was such a thing as a "Professional Game Tester".. If that were the case, I'd be a Billionaire by now! I think some people here just seem to have a high opinion of themselves.. I really don't know... But if such is the case of their logic, I guess now we can all rest easy at night knowing that children of our nation are not throwing their lives away in front of their Playstaions and Xboxes. They're in training to be Professional Game Testers! Nice to know they'll have a career to fall back on when they flunk out of school.
In my opinion, contrary to what those cheezy commercials at night tell you, You'll be hard pressed to find a career playing video games all day. If ever by some whopping miracle, playing video games did become work, it wouldn't be fun to play them anymore! Furthermore let's be a little more realistic here... "Beta Tester" is merely an industry code-word for "Lab Rat". Neither requires any skills.
Personally, I plan to purchase Vanguard. Naturally I don't expect it to run perfectly the first few months that it's out. No MMORPG does. But I'm willing to give them a chance, and I'm sure within 3 or 4 months it will be running smooth as a banana milkshake! If not I'll just sell the game to recoup my losses and go with another MMORPG.
Actually, there are such things as professional game testers.
Their official title is Quality Assurance team members. So when you look at the credits of a game and see the names under QA Team, that's who they're talking about.
That being said, being a 'professional game tester' isn't as glamorous as it sounds to be. What it basically entails is you play the same game, over and over and over again, doing the same things over and over and over, to see if the game breaks. It's incredibly boring, tedious and time consuming work. Imagine playing a game all the way through, then having to do it again with different hair colour to see if something breaks. Also you're generally playing unfinished games, so you won't get to enjoy it the way you would with a finished product. You'll have to play the game even if it sucks, because its your job. If you do find a bug, then you gotta write up a report on what happened, try to make it happen again, and give the programmers etc all the info. Then, you get to do it all over again.

My ancestors were in on the original Ping Pong beta test. Not only that, I have the original bug report on the cannon in Chinese Chess being able to jump two pieces to attack.
If you look in the "Thank you playtesters!" section of the Book of Love, you will find several generations of my family.
Hoyle stole all the credit from my family.
I invented the phrase "Don't hate the player, hate the game!"
OMG!!! Chinese Chess!!! That game is totally AWESOME, I bought a board and amused myself for hours with no one else...
Anyways, a "good marketing strat/advert campaign" or w/e u said there is not an aspect of the game. Hence, you have not given us any good aspects of the game. Hundreds of people are testing this game and having fun, even if it is a bit unfinished. MMORPGs are designed to grow...even your precious WoW wasn't anywhere near where it is now when it first came out.
Please, if you are a professional game tester, and have 6 years of experience (as you rectified from 18 in a further post), you should pick up on things that others do not. Give us deeper reasons as to why you think this game sucks, not the surface (and blatantly obvious) reasons that everyone ELSE is mentioning.
Another thing: paragraphs are your friend. You must be in your 20s, if you can be outdone by a 16yo (and test games for a living), that tells me something.
And finally, if you think this game is gonna flop cuz it "lags" and is a bit "twitchy," guess what? They's a fix that up real soon-like.
What ticked me off the most is they plan on releasing it a month later.
Well its coming out in a few days.....so since u havent played it for a month, u should stfu. They're constantly updating...1 (sometimes 2) big patches a day. Really good gfx and was pretty fun from what i played.... sure i had to turn my gfx down but im sure some of that lag was from server stability and they'll most likely have it polished by launch. This game owns...i alrdy got the pre-order (only $10)
lol the main reason i came here was kuz i knew u were gona get flamed hardcore lol....
November 15, 2005.......the day it all went up in flames
I've never gotten how people are like "I dont want to play an MMO that is a beta." To me that makes no sense..why do you think you pay a monthly fee?? Because it's always changing, getting updated, bugs that slipped through radars are being repaired, sometimes new and exciting and FREE content is added. If we followed the logic of "I don't want to play an mmo until it is completely finished..we'd all still be waiting on Ultima Online to come out." Sometimes you gotta cut the cord, overlook some shit, and play. Most of these games *unless it's based on a major sci-fi movie license* usually fixes itself in time.

First of all Mr. Professional, if your paranoid, misinformed, prematurely ejaculated post had a hint of objectivity to it then maybe I'll give you my grain of salt. You in MY OPINION which at this point trumps yours, (thats right my epeen is bigger than yours) are the most unprofessional of testers I've ever been fortunate to meet (I'll say fortunate because its not always that you run into the most "insert-bottom of the basket quote here" individual often).
Geesh, if you don't like the game thats fine; don't jump in here acting like God sent you to save the us from *gasp* a game.
Honestly, the only beta I've been in that released in worse shape than Vanguard is releasing in was Mourning. I've been in a few dozen betatests, and - they REALLY needed a couple more months, at least , of beta.
Note--I havn't read the rest of this thread yet... And im already in a great mood (sarcasm)
This is as far as I needed to read to know that your opinion is not worth very much(To me anyway)... Been reading these forums for awhile (Don't post much...) And I would rather take Jackdogs opinion into account then yours anyday of the week (This is not a flame at you Jack, I say that simply because you are one of the few people Iv seen hate VG *or so it seemed* but still was able to say something good about it, And admit it had a chance (You acually gave it a chance))...
Its bad enough you flame the game after beta testing for 2 days.......... But then you claim to be a professional? lol, Playing games for a long time does not make you a professional, sorry.
P.S. I have not beta tested this game, I base my opinions off of what I read... And I will be getting a new comp soon... And will try it then for myself. (plus I have a few RL friends that are gonna be playing) If I don't like it, Owell... I'll play something else, But I can bet money I wont ome here flaming it, no matter how much I dislike it *if I do*.

Acutally incorrect about #6.
EQ2 was instanced housing, and Vanguard is not. It's live player owned houses, much like UO and SWG, and NOT like EQ2.
