Vanguard

Hey I just quit wow before the expansion came out looking for a game to play before i played wow i was into Everquest 1 and guild wars. So basically i would like to know if this game is like Everquest or WoW, like is it forced groups like eq or solo like wow, also is it easy to get gear like wow or harder and takes longer like Everquest. The classes and graphics look similar to EQ, also can you all tell me the requirements to run the game and any other information about the games thanks.

Bit of both. Plays very much like WoW at lower levels but has the overall depth and scale of EQ.

    I'd have to agree.

It's sorta a compromise between EQ and WoW, though it's a bit more on the EQ side. If you liked EQ1, then you'll definately like the game, it brings back the feeling that we all miss from that game. That being said, it's a little smoother and it eases you into the game a little better, kinda like WoW does. However instead of leading you by hand the entire way through, it starts to drop off and you're expected to start to learn the system yourself.

Many people notice a change from lvls 1-9 to the gameplay of levels 10+, though 10+ is when the game really starts picking up where EQ left off.

    The System requirements are:

    MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS • Windows® 2000/XP/Vista

    • 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible computer

    • 100% DirectX compatible keyboard or input device

    • Processor 2.4 GHz Intel processor or 2400+ or higher model AMD processor

    • 512 MB RAM

    • Vertex and Pixel shader 2.0 compatible hardware with 128MB of texture memory

    • 56K + Internet Connection

    • 16X Speed DVD-ROM

    • 20 Gigabytes Hard Drive Space

    RECOMMENDED SPECS

If you like  "kill 10 of these, and bring me back 10 of those" type of quests you'll love Vanguard.

Judging by this you must have played one character for like 5 minutes but comments like these are on par with the haters.

Lets face it when we boil quests doe to the basics they cannot accomplish anything that the avatar cannot do. Most are go to a point on the map or kill a mob, even collecting flowers or rocks etc are just kill quests that do not fight back. So the quest writers job is to make those quests interesting using a very limited range of actions. I don't play WowW but some friends of mine do and they had me cracking up describing the quests in the Burning Crusade, and all the quests were simply collect this and kill that. It was what they had to collect and or how they had to kill that made it fun. Bombing raids and sifting through boar doo for a key LOL.

It is the writing and how the quest is weaved into the lore and atmosphere of the game that seperates a good quest from a bad one. The basic actions of all of them are pretty much the same old thing rinse and repeat.

Vangaurds questsa are just like the rest of the game, some are good  and some really suck. Hopefully quests will geta a couple of polish runs after release.

In Vanguard quests I have been asked to:

    - Plant scorpions in the homes of a band of ksaravi (ratmen) and watch them turn from "Ksaravi Scamp" or "Ksaravi Bloodletter" to "Panicked Ksaravi" and run out of the valley.

    - As a stuffy and officious High Elf, convince the Queen's Chancellor to schedule a vote of the Queen's Court on whether or not to present an urgent report on the state of the defenses to the Queen.

    - To persuade a bunch of union workers into an ambush so the local authorities could give them a good thrashing.

    - To break several people arrested on trumped-up charges out of jail

    - To use a mask of disguise to change into a Ksaravi so that I could convince them to give up their plans for an attack on a caravan. The next quest was to lead them into the counter-ambush.

All of these quests were pre-level-10.

Vanguard is very much like WOW/EQ2 fusion

There is few important things to know before you buy the game

    1. It is very system demanding - Do not even think about it if you dont have top of the line PC , and at least 2 gig ram.

Playing on anything less than this makes game stutter, and very unplayable

    2. Diferent from WOW and EQ2 where you have quests and mobs everywhere. Vanguard have adventure areas.

Think of them like WOW instanced dungeons - except they are not instanced. This areas are places you will spend large amounts of time. Basically you will be in the same location for many levels. This is the way EQ worked aswell.

    3. The game is challenging , but also tedious. You can die easily and then you will be forced to spend up to 30 minutes just retrieving your corpse. Look to no1. - If your computer is not up to date, you will die often due to lag

    4. The game apsolutely forces grouping. Which is great. Or not ... depending on your style of play

The only quests i've been impressed with in a mmo is EQ2, it's a shame the game turned out the way it did.

    Ah yes..one more thing

Some people put Vanguard on throne as first 3rd gen MMO.

When in fact it is 2nd gen combined with 1st gen.

It offers nothing that has not been seen or done before (if you dont count that card minigame they call diplomacy)

It is just kind of bigger than other mmos (not neceserally as full of content though)

I've never seen anyone go up to a tree and chop it down in an mmo before .   Maybe minor , it is Immersive , and after all is it not the little things that matter most ?     So  I think  wow if they managed that then what other things did they try to pull off in the game.

I was in open beta for 2 days, maybe a total of 8 hrs.  I was impressed with some things , not so impressed with others,  but keeping in mind its was still beta .

Vanguard to me seems to be a mix of  SWG and EQ.  I like the wide open lands and no instanced areas.  A large variety of  quests, and grindable if you feel the need.  I don't know about you , but I sometimes get tired of quests and just want to kill some stuff and get xp in the process.

Finally,  I'm still on the fence. though this game has quite a pull on me.  Though in reality I will probably be at the nearest  store on 1/30/07 to purchase my copy with only one question on my mind.  Buy the collectors edition or  not ?  After all i pay for SOE's all access pass so i may as well take advantage of it.

Just for reference, my S.O.'s computer *IS* the minimum spec. After a fresh format, she gets 5fps in vanguard (near people about 1fps). It's NOT playable IMO. I would use the recommended spec as the minimum spec (course, that's how most games are.) My computer exceeds the recommended spec and I'm pulling low 20s fps but it is playable.

If you're looking for a great community try ATITD, the game play is teadius, monotonus, and annoying... but the community is probably the best I've ever seen in any game. Shrug.

Vanguard is a good game, but not a 3rd gen MMO. EQ2 is much more polished.
