Stargate Worlds: Interview With Dan Elggren

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Garrett Fuller had a chance to ask a few questions to Dan Elggren, the Senior Producer for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment's upcoming MMO title Stargate Worlds.

MMORPG.com:

Tell us about what it is like working with the Stargate IP. How has it been in adapting the material to a video game setting?

Dan Elggren

The Stargate IP is really a dream setting for an MMORPG. The Stargate enables near instantaneous travel between disparate worlds, allowing developers and artists to work with a widely varied palette. The game play aspects we are bringing together - modern combat, sci-fi weapons and the exploration of new worlds - are challenging to assemble, but we have a world-class development team here that is up to the task.

Wish they'd been asked to comment on how SG gameplay will differ to SWG - I sooo hope they're going down a different path. Quests, crafting, I'm scared already that this'll be another excellent opportunity wasted; please prove me wrong. Maybe next interview....

I really hope its not a SWG clone either.  Its too soon to judge though, I have a feeling that they are gonna steer away from that gameplay though.  I almost want to imagine a FPS type game for the tactical options that they brought up.  To use cover effeciently, thats my only idea so far.  Maybe something similar to GRAW or Rainbow Six for squad play.

Q: Will the game be FPS or RPG?

We are not designing Stargate Worlds to play like a first-person shooter, although we are attempting to make a squad-based modern infantry combat play system. As in the show, most of the combat in SGW will be at range with a machine gun, rifle, staff weapon, zat gun or some other device which can hit you from far away. Given latency issues with both the internet connection and the client/server, it is nearly impossible to create good gameplay which would be consistent for everyone regardless of their connection, computer spec, or the overall population of the server.

We would rather focus the combat gameplay around using the environment for cover, practicing smart tactics, and taking advantage of skills, equipment, and command/control. It would be unfair to make the combat reliant on player reaction time or the quality of their system.

In addition to the above, we'll be adding explosives, smoke, electronic countermeasures, stealth, and the skill system to make the combat experience a exciting part of gameplay. We also want airstrikes, orbital bombardment, vehicles, the "FRED" as a respawn point, ammunition, personal shields, kevlar armor, and a bunch of other stuff to enrich the fighting in our game.

One of the vignettes I would like to see in combat is the "Zulu" mission. Your intrepid SG team is outnumbered by more than 10 to 1 against a technically inferior enemy. You have a prepared position (perhaps a bunker) with a 50 caliber machinegun, staff weapons, grenades, and perhaps a mortar. How long can your team survive before being overrun?

If we can make a situation like this exciting, we'll be pretty pleased. Thanks!

If the gameplay is half near the art this game will be un-believable!!

I have very high hopes for this game, hope they can deliver.....

I guess you mean so many CRAP games beign developed.

Personally Im only looking forward to WAR, SGW and Conan.

So many half-assed MMO's, Id be ashemed to say if I had worked on some of the crap Ive played. = And yea, I know its hard and yada yada, I cant do better because I didnt choose a programming career, but meh...lets have a bit of common sense.

I hope SGW will be the first (if there are then I apologize) MMO where you actually have to aim your weapon instead of just "target enemy, click ATTACK, go get a soda."   I know this is an FPS feature, but I beleive this will force combat to focus on player-ability rather than l33t loot ability.

Now if Cheyenne Mountain can accurately render Amanda Tapping, then I will be truly impressed.

Well with what crap George tried to  pass off for the 'prequel' movies,  add in SOE involvement, and finding anyone to stand up for Star Wars and defend how good it is.. is well  Even Star Trek fans can now come out of the conventions proud about how even Deep Space 9 is more entertaining....

I feel confident that at least Cheyenne Mtn games will not over haul the game, replace everything worked for with a 'but this is better' then lock and ban players for complaining, all the while covering bugs with new additions that also have bugs... so yes it will be better

Star Wars Galaxy tried to implement this in the NGE overhaul, but as the player base was used to the former click and walk away with specials on macro style fighting it was a huge dissapointment. Also factor in IP latency, connection speeds, distance from server, etc all arguements against the feasability of 'Twitch' based FPS combat in a MMORG. A Dev log said they want to bring in the 'modern combat' feel of fire and maneuver, use of cover, etc. So it looks based on that, your gonna like this style. Player ability should be rewarded over fat lewt, but it could be done by their choice of skill selection ( similar to how pre-NGE-SWG had skill based different classes ) rather than a +12 Staff weapon of the Lord Aratheggle.

Personally i feel the attack, and leave to do something ( anything ) was a factor of the boredom of a reppetative grind fest, rather than an interest in what's happening, more so than the style of combat. The first time you kill a cave rat in a Fantasy MMO it's exciting, but the 49877354367587548609743,556,346,532,765,456,678,396,000,000 one is well a bore.

/Agree with the Amanda comment, but please don't skimp out on teyla, or the new doctor either ( No not Dr Wier, the hawtie from Andromeda back at the SGC )

I am soooo looking forward to SgW.  I wish it were here NOW.  But most of all, I want this game to succeed, be fun, and overall, draw a good community like some of us experienced back in the 'good old days.'

Ahh, you mean Lexa Doig (the general's daughter.)  Please forgive me for that oversight.   She could have married me, but noooo!  She married Daniel Jackson IRL.

Stargate keep my interest high.  I have no idea if I would like what they will do or not, but it certainly sound promising; at least from a PvE point of view.

Planetside would be the first one I know of, but it's pretty much full on MMOFPS, squad tactics, large battles (in the old days), vehicle combat (air and land), indoor and outdoor.

Huxely looks to be following a similiar path with a little more of the RPG in the mix.

Auto Assault also requires some of your weapons to be pointing in the correct direction to fire.

And as previous stated SWG NGE did go down the get the cursor on your target to shoot it path.

This game will have nothing in common with star wars galaxies, and thats a bad thing. everyone gets hung up on what happened to the game (star wars galaxies) and forget the amazing potential the game had upon release.

Just so you know, they are using World of warcraft as the model for this game ( or as I  now say "World of Everquest Rings in Camelot "). Some will deny that but having read everything I could get my eyes on it is a no brainer.

If you've been around then you know how to ignore what companies say in generalizing thier game and dig deeper. ( Always disregard what companies say and learn to read between the lines of all information from all sources)

They are talking about using cover and supressing fire however THIS WILL NOT BE A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER!  they have made every effort to make that known.

You will have +3 jaffa staves and the like , becuase after all they are retrofitting Daoc, WoW, Eq and so on to fit thier sci fi theme.... All in all they could have amazed many by giving people a chance to feel like they were in the world SG1 lives in (which is our world of course plus the SG fiction and aliens etc. ) But instead they are giving us what we come to know ( maybe even hatee bored of, or mysteriously thrilled with)

We all know star wars galaxies got screwed up, but it should be given the credit for undertaking to great success a game that set out to create a star wars universe!!! we can point out alot of things about it that was unreal( ive done that alot too! )  but it is now time to start telling other companies that star wars galaxies was going in the right direction.

Sci Fi historically has led the way in opening mankinds imaginations...even if you hate sci fi you would still be in the right to see how it laid the groundwork in opening mankinds imagination so that everything else that follows benefited. So it pains me to see cheyennne "play it safe" and go with the tried formula. It could be so much more.

It may turn out to be the best MMO ever, I would even hope so. But if you watched stargate youd know that the typical fan of the show will not be "living" the stargate experience but rather playing what has become a narrow MMO formula with a stargate theme. (maybe many think that a good thing, but those that have played MMO's for a long time are more and more looking for the industry to start filling the vast amount of potential it has)

It could have delivered an MMO experience weve never had. Instead at best we can hope it delivers the best version of what we have had many many many times. remember WoW is a copy of another game, which was itself a copy, which it too was a copy, and so on and so on. If WoW was your first MMO I wouldnt blame you for not being sick of the style yet. ( unless youve been playing WoW for 2 years, I amaze at you in that case  seriously how ya do it? lol)

But for me, especially when it comes to sci fi I want to be able to leave my "world" and step inside and get lost in another...much like reading a great book, instead of playing essentially the same game where I have to kill 5 bad guys, return to quest giver, go kill 5 more bad guys...::::lets skip ahead 30 levels:::::...get quest , go kill 5 bad guys which are same as earlier bad guys but these are a different color and resist fire!

PS..sorta___________Being able to build your house anywhere! loved it. I remember the first time I built and placed my house in SWG (which had me roleplaying wihtout even knowing I was! )....A few other games followed SGW in allowing gamers to play music (some even let them create the music) nice!!!, MMO's have UNLIMITED potential! we could find ourselves doing all thing we do already like in World of warcraft, but doing them in a world that also offers so much more.

It seems to me the biggest reason we are not is "us" If we keep asking for a game that has fun gameplay with balanced classes in a much more realistic world wed get it. We would also get game concepts that blow our minds that never occured to us! That would so rock.

EXAMPLE ---Suppose a trade skil required flowers, plants, berries etc. to make potions...It would be kinda cool if when looking for a place to build your house you had to take into consideration a good spot for your garden!!!!! So instead of having to fight spiders and hurry to grab one of the same 5 plants before someone else got it, you would have to be skilled in growing a variety of flora!!!!...and suppose you had to utilize real life techniques! trimming, pest control and so on...people who like trade skills but dont like fighitng would be in heaven!

now you have different climates to worry about ....well the imagination could go on and on for that one

I've been excited for this game ever since I read about it a year ago. They are using the unreal 3 engine so it will be pretty.

Agree that the unreal engine looks great! the screenshots are amazing (some actually complain they are to good and therefore unrealistic!! lol which kills me considering the unrealistic part is in how they are making the game! still never thought i'd see people complain that graphics are too good.)

But remember it is not a first person shooter. at least if you read thier web site it is stated several times that its not a FPS and you will have to click on a target and the game calculates if you hit or such.

makes me wonder about supressing fire... just wanted to reiterate it not being FPS because even on thier forumns people see UNREAL and think fps. not saying you made that mistake

    ...it not being FPS...

Yeah I know it's not. Other than being a fan of stargate, I'm excited about the graphics because most MMO's I've played don't live up to the graphical end of the first person shooters out there. Gears of War looks great and its 3rd person most of the time.

My wife and I have been SG-1 fans for a long time and we are so looking forward to this game. I hope they do it right. We each only play one game at a time and have been very disappointed lately. For the past year we actually didn't play anything. Please let this game be done right and out soon.
