I voted Priest, but all of those bands were fantastic (except W.A.S.P.).

I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.

My vote goes for Queen, despite them not being a Metal band of any sort. They still were a great fuckin band.

Since Motorhead wasn't included in that poll, I went with Iron Maiden.    Up The Irons !

Queen does not sound like, nor do they share similar "metal" sounds as those other bands. They are classic rock, however this argument is really just nit-picking as all these bands could just as easily fall under the rock catagory.

Metallica was the only one I listened to on your list.  The black album was my favorite.

I did not expect QUEEN to be categorized as "old school heavy metal" ...

  • LogomogoLogomogo Member Posts: 15

I would have said Metallica a few years ago ... but they suck.

    Queen's got the grove

Old School Metal is no good at all.

There are a lot of new bands trying to copy the bands and bring it into a new modern form ... much better, but it still won't do the trick I think.

But since it is kind of a cliche that mmporg players are either long haired metal guys  or black dressed gothic people (no offence, just a side note), I am not really surprised, that there ARE ACTUALLY a lot of those

    Nothing changes faster than history.

I use to love Metallica growing up. As for the rest, well I really didn't listen to their music.

The Queen & Led Zeppelin are NOT metal. And wikipedia is a very unrelayable source when it comes of sorting genres.

    My vote goes to Maiden

I used to listen to Iron Maiden when I was back in high school.... I think the last album of theirs I listened to was Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and I recall being quite disappointed in it, however, I don't really remember why. :)

    Metallica 82-91

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

I voted Black Sabath, any band that has Satan as a 5th member is alright as far as I am concerned.

The end part of the song "Stairway To Heaven" from Led Zeppelin is considered to be the cradle of Metal... what do you nu-metal kids with your fancy hairstyles and "bubblegum-wannabe-metal-music" actually know, you got nothing in common with us long haired and full bearded true metlars who carry the anger of the ancient gods within their balls!

    j/k...

If we're having Queen and Led Zep on the list, my vote would go to Deep Purple or Uriah Heep who should also be listed if we're using that definition of metal, but then Slayer and WASP started in 1982 and are hardly "old school" - perhaps not Iron Maiden either.

Heh, try to make a simple poll, and you're faced with us being an awkward, pernickety lot.

Iron Maiden started out in the mid to late 70s'.  That is still old school, if you are going to consider Metalica old school (1981).

Yep, good point. Metalica, like Slayer and WASP are "middle school" for want of a better term   - I guess Iron Maiden just about cross over, although the stuff they're better known for was in the 80s I'd think.

I got to see almost every band in your list .My fave from your list was SLAYER.There concerts were alive and fulla energy. There is one group i had a chance to see in canada ,that to this day was the loudest and most energy i ever seen in a concert small venue>>VENOM.Not a group you would go out and buy a record to listen to really but live they were simply amazing. They most likely came to canada only once as they were relatively unknown here being a Euro/German type metal core band.My favourite song for a long time was SEEK n DESTROY[metallica],it even made me pick up and learn guitar. This was my first complete song i learned.i just loved it.Slayer just had too many cool songs to play and listen to like AOD/seasons in the abyss/raining blood to name a few :D.

How many remember EVIL INVADERS by RAZOR?  lol great tune.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I think part of the problem with classifying 'metal' and 'rock' with old school bands is that there was a very fine line between the two in the '70's and then of course there is progressive rock ...   Was the term heavy metal established in the 60's or '70's and which band was the first considered metal?  Was it Sabbath, Judas Priest, UFO, Maiden.  Often in the '70's the term metal and hard rock were even considered synonymous with one another and encompassed many bands of which both terms described.

In this day and age there are many more different genres within the category Heavy Metal or Rock.  Back then I don't believe it was the norm to breakdown music into so many categories.

Maiden cause it is the closest to what I listen.

Don't really listen to any of these, but Maiden is definitely close enough for me to actually appreciate it, unlike most other bands that would get an immediate request that they are freaking turn off!

Currently listening to: Dream Maker.  (not a major trend, nor a major group hehe, emerge from Dark Moor after some EMO issues...)
