Vista and MMORPG?

I'm thinking about buying a new pc and wondering if I should buy one with Windows Vista or rather one with XP? Are there any problems with Vista and MMORPGs? I'd like to know how Vista works with Everquest II and WoW? Anybody who tried this already?

Vista comes preloaded on new pcs starting on January 30th (vista's release date) so no one will know really til then how games will run with the new operating system .  I have seen Vista in a display at the store where I work and it looks like a great user friendly system, but I am going to wait a couple of months for all the bugs to be worked out of it before upgrading my pc.

Vista isant even out yet and even then it wont work properly for a few months anyway [unless there is a god!!!].

But its safe to say that the newer MMO's will be the most compatable. And considering this is the next mainstream windows OS then id say its a safebet in the long run.

Vista was released 2 months ago to enterprises as well as to MSDN subscribers.

Till now I haven't see one game that does not work on Vista. All of the games and MMO's I have tried work perfectly; even on Vista x64, which is my main OS.

There's no problem with EQ2, WOW, Vanguard, L2, GW, etc...

The eaerliest game to support DX10 via Vista will be Age of Conan. The graphics are visably superior to dx9 but so far the platform seems not to be as stable as XP with dx9. Thats to be expected. However the future is Vista and we'll all have to go there at some point. Early adopters will have to suffer the typical new thing headaches. If you have the money for a Vista DX10 rig then might as well jump in.

Better off with XP .... I gt a copy of the enterprise version of Vista and it was buggy, did not work with my sound blaster live 5.1, and has some major issues with games. (COH looked like crap as you have to turn off Areo Glass before hand.

Maybe after the first or second service pack.

Vista IS out. It shipped the 30 November.

But only for companies. In fact you can buy Vista in your local store within a week from now.

Please get a clue before you post, thank you.

    Which drivers did you use?

Nvidia, Ati And Creative only very recently actually shipped RTM drivers.

I won’t be using Vista any time soon. It brings nothing new to the table and comes with built in “trusted computing” which is Microsoft’s way of saying “*prove* to use we can trust you or we won’t let you use your computer”. Significant parts of the design are predicated on circumventing court decisions regarding fair use in the guise of copyright protection.

(Contrary to what many companies would have you believe the US supreme court, has rules that Copying CD/DVD’s, ripping, encoding, changing formats, using material in different regions all constitutes fair use of that material as long as you don’t try to redistribute it.  But these are the very actions Microsoft is designing Vista to try and prevent.  Most other countries have similar fair use laws. )

Surprising. Looks like you tried an early beta version on Vista, because I don't have these problems with the final version anymore. Actually Vista is much more stable than XP on my system. I dual boot Vista x64 and XP 32bit. When a game crashes and takes my whole XP system down, the same game also crashes in Vista but it does not take the computer down, it puts me back to the desktop.

And what does Aero Glass have to do with COH looking like crap ?

Actually, when something does not support it, aero disables itself automatically. But anyway, aero is just a gui effect for the desktop, why would your game look like crap because of this ? I am not running COH now, but I have played the 14 days trial and I didn't experience the problem you are talking about.

If I was buying a new pc now, I would certainly get the free vista upgrade, or wait until they come loaded with Vista.

Vista is the way to go, it's a no brainer.  Anyone who suggests to stay with XP, doesn't have a clue.

The big grabber on Windows Vista is the Direct X 10 graphics card compatability. Right now these cards are very expensive, $500 and up, and no games require them yet. Basically, if you are going to purchase a new computer, you might as well get one with Windows Vista. If you already have a computer with Windows XP, don't panic, you can wait and upgrade to Vista when it is required by that certain game you just can't live without. And face it, as gamers we know that will ultimately happen.

The big question is, if you purchase a new computer, whatever operating system you get, you will need a graphics card to run that cool game you can't live without today. Generally, you are going to have to fork out some bucks for a graphics card that is not DirectX 10 compliant, knowing full well in around a year you will start looking to replace it with a DirectX 10 card.  Once again, don't panic, we are all in that boat, as eventually we all will be wanting a DirectX 10 game.

So, in short summary, if you can wait a week, any future computer purchases will have Windows Vista, and a DirctX 9 graphics card until the prices come down from the stratosphere. When graphics card prices hit earth, buy the DirectX 10 card and upgrade to Vista if you haven't already done so. But there's no hurry until the games require it, at least a year down the road.

Maximum PC had an article in their Feb issue titled "10 reason you don't need Vista today".  It pretty much stated that anything legacy is going to be 50/50.  Not bad news if you are buying a new machine and the latest hardware, but there is no need for anyone with an XP machine to upgrade.  As with all things Microsoft, it may also be a good idea to wait 6 months.....

I think Vista has a virtual drive support built in?

Personally I would say anyone who DID downgrade to Vista didn't have a clue. It's a disaster for games, and personally, I don't feel like being force fed all that DRM until I am FORCED to get the OS thanks to them making DX10 Vista exclusive, with the primary intent that gamers would be forced into buying their crap.
