A-Level media project based on MMORPG's . User servey. All MMORPG players invited!

HI, first of all thanks for checking out this post. I hope this can be stickied if I'm lucky. Its some really interesting stuff!

I really hope people aren't put off visiting the site as its hoasted on freewebs, as thats all i can afford, seenin as its a college project.

www.freewebs.com/projecthelpammorpger

Basically, i set this site up to help me with me A-Level Media project. By asking questions on here for my research, I can just post the link to various forums, and people kindly visite it to help me, or even just comment on what im doing and make suggestions.

Also i keep a blog of what i have done and what i plan to do.

The WHY? section will explain exactly what im doing, and the blog will tell you the stage I'm at right now.

I'll upload various questions and polls for people to fill in from time to time.

I'm always interested in your opinion, so why not leave me a comment either in the comments box or the guestbook.

Thaks for reading up to here. Below is more information of what I'm doing.

Below is part of the course paper we were given at the start of the project.

Under that is a sample blog entry.

AS Media Studies, Foundation Production, Unit 2730

I had a choice between a magazine, an advertising campaign, and a website. I chose the magazine.

"The front cover of a new, teenage magazine with the age range of 13-19 years old and at least one main double page spred. The work must feature at least three original images (minimum four pages in total)

The photographs must be taken by the candidates themselves, with proof supplied in the Production Report appendix."

120 marks for the project is split up...

30 for Planning

60 for Construction

30 for Production Report

The project is split up into four sections with a production report of 500 words for each section. The sections are...

1. The brief and research into similar media texts/target audiences

2. Planning and production

3. Constructing the production - tehcnical decisions and revisions

4. Evaluation and finnished product

I am keeping a blog, so for if you want to know what ive done so far, check that out.

Welcome to The Daedalus Projec

Wednesday, Jan 10, 2007

I was doing some research last night when i came across this...

http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/

Its a website containing loads of research all to do with MMORPG players.

It contains surveys from over 35,000 MMORPG players from the most popular MMORPG's in the US.

It contains very useful information for my project. Its probably the best find so far for me.

Althought it points out that just over 25% of MMORPG players are teenage, thats still a HUGE number of people, considering that over 7million people play the leading MMORPG World of Warcraft. Thats just ONE MMORPG, and theres loads more. Even a quater of 7million leaves a heck of a big target audience.

Today, i plan to use some time at collage to print off various things and put them in a folder, aswell as add written sections to my apendix explaining why they are relevent to my Target readership profile. I need to start on the style and form of the Treatment, and finnish off looking at existing gaming magazines.

Any fruther questions, feel free to ask me either here or via the websites main comment box.

Thanks for reading.

Hey! I'm checking out your website now.

However, you might've been better off posting this in the 'off topic' area..

the chances of you actually sharing the info after your project is zero... sadly not worth my time anymore.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

The results are all there to see! just look on the site! u can click see results below the poll, and the comment people leave are still there.

What info is it you dont think I will be sharing?

For obvious reasons I cant put all my coursework up online, but I can put the finnished front cover and double page spred up online when ive done that.

Aww, why you doing that at AS-Level, don't do it to full A-level! hehe. I did that, was my highest Grade i think, though it was less media focussed.

My advice to anyone doing A-Levels is thus: I know they are tough, but the core subjects such as Maths, English (Of paricular interest to you, as it's media related) and one of the sciences are invaluable; try and do one of those along with the more interesting subjects.

They allow you better Uni prospects, help with courses that contain elements of those subjects and employers value them, unlike many other A-Levels. (though may help for internships to have more relevant subjects to their trade). I've taken them off my CV before to save room lol.

Sadly, A-levels are seen as merely entry grades for University and nothing else mostly, except for the ones mentioned above. Though i'm assuming and your future ambitions could require this course.

I decided to go for course which i would enjoy. Along with media, im doing maths and double computing.

seenin as im not sure exactly wot i want 2 do yet, i decided to choose wot i like doing, which is anything compuer and media relatd.

there loads of jobs to do with media and or computing, and i could happily do anything computerwise

thanks for that advice though, but i really wanna do the full a-level, as i love video work. you can see my GCSE video at www.gunmetal.org.uk and then in the media section. called NYLON. me n my mates band. they did a vid 2gether, but i wanted 2 do mine on my own. i have the whole image thing going on in my head, n it HAS to be that way! lol. at GCSE u just dnt get the time 2 perfect, where as at A-Level, i get a we bit more time, which is so much fun. Plus im not too bad at exams either, so i hope to get 4 good A-Levels

interested in chattin with u, email me at ben@gunmetal.org.uk  and we can exchange msn if u have it (which i recon u will do) :P

    cheers

ooo amazing a longer poll that lets you see the data.

I did computing to AS-Level, but sadly it was mainly MS Excel stuff (i didm't wanna be a secretary dammit!) and not enough programming, hardware, etc. so didn't do the full A-level on that.
What you describe is probably what i was interested in and still am, but don't get sidetracked, decide what industry you want to go in, what job, and what the current industry requirements are for that job and go for them. I jumped between IT, Business, Economics, Geography, everything. As a result im ok at everything, but not specialized, which has delayed my career a bit. (im going into Civil Engineering/CAD now, wtf?!). I've always wanted to go into graphic design (carebear sig rules! ha), which is one of the things that combines media/computing well.

    gd advice.

yeh, it took me a year to decided wot i was gunna do for my A-Levels. ive looked at uni placements aswell. but my thinking was, i do what i like, and ill then be able to do a course that requires me 2 be able to do what i love doing =D

yeh, first modual we have been doing VB, but then its a double, so we also follow another scheme of work aswell, probs wot u discribed. were starting hardwear and system specs now, which is seriously kewl. we learnt how 2 install an OS 2day, took the teacher a few gos, things didnt show up on the projector, like wot keys 2 press n stuff lol

maths is a bit of a drag, but its still fun. media is so much fun, coz we had an exam, n now were just doing this project, which i love. double ICT is just heaven for me, coz id want 2 learn the stuff we learn if i had the spare time to anyway! =D

good luck with whatever it is your doing!
